Clogged toilets are never convenient. You flush, expecting everything to go down normally—but instead, the water starts rising. It’s stressful, especially if you don’t have a plunger nearby.
While a proper toilet plunger is usually the best solution, it’s not always available. And if you only have a flat sink plunger, it likely won’t create the seal needed to fix the problem.
The good news? There’s a simple method you can try using items you probably already have at home.
The Dish Soap Method
This approach doesn’t require special tools or harsh chemicals—just liquid dish soap and hot water.
Step 1: Add Dish Soap
Pour about half a cup of liquid dish soap into the toilet bowl. It may look unusual, but the soap will sink and begin coating the clog and the inside of the pipes. Let it sit for about 25–30 minutes so it can work effectively.
Step 2: Add Hot Water
Fill a bucket with hot water—make sure it’s not boiling, as very high temperatures can damage porcelain. Slowly pour the hot water into the bowl from waist height. Pouring gradually helps avoid splashing or overflow.
The combination of soap and hot water helps loosen the blockage, allowing it to move through the pipes more easily. In many cases, you’ll hear a gurgling sound as the clog clears.
If It Doesn’t Work Immediately
If the toilet doesn’t clear on the first try, don’t worry. You can repeat the process:
- Add more dish soap
- Let it sit longer
- Pour another round of hot water
Stubborn clogs may take a couple of attempts, but this method often works for common issues like excess toilet paper or slow drainage.
When This Method May Not Work
This technique is best for minor clogs. It may not be effective for more serious blockages caused by solid objects or deeper plumbing issues. In those cases, a plunger or professional help may be necessary.
