I Called the Police After Hearing Someone Outside My Window. Then the Dispatcher Said Someone Had Already Called

It was shortly after 3 a.m. when a strange noise pulled me out of my sleep. At first, I thought it was the wind, but then I heard it again. Something seemed to be scraping against the outside of my bedroom window.

I had been living alone since my husband passed away two years earlier. Although I had gradually become comfortable with the quiet house, hearing someone outside my window in the middle of the night was enough to make my heart race.

I reached for my phone and called the county emergency dispatcher.

After answering a few routine questions, the dispatcher suddenly went quiet.

“Ma’am, I’m showing that you already contacted us about fifteen minutes ago.”

I stared at my phone, confused.

“That’s impossible. This is my first call tonight.”

The dispatcher checked his records again. He then explained that a woman had called earlier, provided my full name and home address, and reported someone standing outside my bedroom window.

What made the situation even more unsettling was the information that followed.

According to the dispatcher, the earlier call had apparently originated from inside my house.

He asked whether anyone else was staying with me.

“No,” I replied. “I live alone.”

His tone immediately became more serious. He instructed me to remain in my bedroom, keep the phone nearby, and wait for officers to arrive.

By then, the scraping sound had stopped. Unfortunately, the sudden silence did little to calm my nerves.

A few minutes later, I noticed the flashing lights of a police vehicle outside. The dispatcher confirmed that officers had arrived and told me to stay on the line.

I put on my robe and slowly made my way downstairs.

Two officers were waiting on the front porch. The older officer introduced himself before asking whether I had contacted the police earlier that evening.

I told him exactly what I had told the dispatcher.

He exchanged a brief look with his partner before asking whether they could inspect the house. I agreed immediately. I wanted to know whether someone had managed to enter without my knowledge.

The officers searched the living room, kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms. They checked the doors and windows carefully.

Everything appeared normal.

The back door was locked, the windows were secured, and there were no obvious signs that anyone had entered the property.

Before leaving the bedroom, the older officer explained what they knew about the earlier emergency call.

It had been placed at approximately 2:47 a.m. The caller was a woman who identified herself using my full name. She reported seeing someone outside my bedroom window but ended the call before the dispatcher could gather more information.

I asked whether they could determine who had made it.

The officer said they would document the incident and review the available information.

When they checked the area outside my bedroom window, one of the officers noticed a set of small footprints in the ground. They appeared to lead away from the house toward the sidewalk, although it was difficult to determine when they had been made.

The officers recorded what they found and assured me that additional patrols would be conducted in the area.

After their departure, I checked the locks again and returned upstairs.

I couldn’t stop thinking about the mysterious woman who had contacted the police using my identity.

Who was she, and how had she known my address?

Unable to settle down, I called my daughter, who lived several states away.

She answered after a few rings. I explained what had happened, including the strange phone call that supposedly came from inside my house.

She listened without interrupting.

Then she told me something I wasn’t expecting.

That night, she had experienced a disturbing dream about our old family home. In the dream, she was standing in the side yard, looking toward my bedroom window. She couldn’t explain why, but she felt certain that something was wrong.

I tried to reassure her that everything was fine, although I wasn’t entirely convinced myself.

Then I asked her a question.

“What time did you wake up?”

There was a short pause.

“A little before three,” she answered.

I immediately remembered the time recorded by the dispatcher.

2:47 a.m.

I asked whether she had called the police or contacted anyone about me that night.

She sounded surprised.

“No, Mom. I haven’t called anybody.”

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

My daughter insisted that she had never contacted the authorities, and I had no reason to believe she was hiding anything from me.

Yet the earlier emergency call had included my name, my address, and details about the very window where I had heard the strange noise.

I looked toward the bedroom window.

The house was quiet again.

But one question continued to trouble me long after that night:

Who had called the police using my name, and how had they known something was happening outside my window?
