Why You Should Never Place Your Crockpot on the Stovetop: A Kitchen Safety Warning

Slow cookers are popular kitchen appliances because they make preparing meals simple and convenient. They allow food to cook slowly over several hours, making it easier to prepare delicious dinners with minimal effort. However, using a slow cooker incorrectly can create serious safety risks, especially when placing it directly on a stovetop.

Traditional slow cooker inserts are usually made from ceramic or stoneware. These materials are designed to handle gradual, controlled heating inside the appliance. They are not necessarily built to withstand the intense, concentrated heat produced by a stovetop burner.

Placing a ceramic insert directly over a flame or hot electric element can cause a sudden temperature change known as thermal shock. This may cause the material to crack or break unexpectedly. If that happens while the insert contains hot food, it could spill and cause painful burns.

Another important precaution is to never place the entire electrical slow cooker on a stovetop. Its heating components and electrical parts are not designed to operate over a cooking burner.

Some modern slow cookers have removable inserts that are approved for additional cooking methods. However, compatibility depends entirely on the manufacturer’s design and instructions. Even if an insert looks strong and durable, that does not automatically mean it is safe for stovetop use. The same applies to oven use, as not every removable insert is oven-safe.

If a recipe requires browning meat, frying onions, or sautéing vegetables before slow cooking, the safest approach is to use a regular frying pan or skillet. Once the ingredients are properly prepared, transfer them into the slow cooker and continue following the recipe.

Accidents can happen, so it is also important to know what to do if a ceramic insert is accidentally exposed to direct stovetop heat. Turn off the burner and allow the insert to cool naturally. Avoid pouring cold water onto hot ceramic because the sudden temperature difference can cause it to crack.

After the insert has cooled completely, inspect it carefully for visible cracks, chips, or other damage. If you discover any damage, stop using it and replace it according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Slow cookers are designed to make everyday cooking easier, but using them safely should always come first. Taking a few extra precautions, following the manufacturer’s instructions, and choosing the correct cookware can help prevent kitchen accidents and keep your meals enjoyable.

Remember: Always check your slow cooker’s instruction manual before using its removable insert on a stovetop or in an oven. A little caution can go a long way toward protecting your kitchen and your family.
