“My husband had just left on a business trip when my six-year-old daughter whispered, ‘Mommy…’”

The hairs on the back of my neck stood up as the voice outside called my name once again. It was a quiet, almost inviting sound, like someone trying to get a pet’s attention. My heart was pounding so hard that I wondered whether Lily could hear it too.

“Lily, stay close to me,” I whispered, gently moving her behind me as we slowly stepped away from the door. She grabbed the back of my shirt, her little hands trembling like leaves in the breeze.

I glanced toward the kitchen window, half-expecting to see a face staring back at me. The curtains barely stirred. Outside, the gray morning surrounded our house like a dark shadow, while the small flag on our porch remained completely motionless.

“Mommy, who is that?” Lily whispered, her voice small and frightened.

I shook my head, trying to appear calm even though I was anything but. “I don’t know, sweetheart. But everything is going to be okay.”

The voice outside suddenly went quiet. Silence settled around us, thick and overwhelming. I looked toward the back door, trying to think through our options. The car keys were in the kitchen. The garage was just a short distance away if we could move quickly.

“I’m going to check the back,” I whispered, hoping Lily wouldn’t start crying.

I took her trembling hand, and together we quietly made our way toward the kitchen. Every step felt like walking across broken glass. It seemed as though the entire world had stopped breathing, waiting for that fragile silence to be shattered.

When we reached the kitchen, I quickly picked up the car keys from the counter. As I turned around, I noticed a figure through the window—a dark, unclear shape standing close to the edge of our backyard. I froze, tightening my fingers around the keys.

“Mommy?” Lily whispered, her voice barely audible beside my ear.

“We’re going to the car, honey,” I told her, trying to make my voice sound stronger than I actually felt. “Remember our game? The one where we pretend to move like ninjas?”

She nodded quickly. “Ninja quiet,” she whispered, her eyes wide with fear.

We slowly made our way toward the back door, my heart racing with every step. I could almost feel the heavy silence closing in around us as I reached for the door handle.

Suddenly, a loud noise shattered the quiet—a powerful bang coming from the front of the house. Lily jumped, gripping my hand even tighter, while my heart seemed to leap into my throat. A moment later, we heard a scraping sound, as though something heavy was being pulled across the porch.

I swallowed nervously, trying to fight the growing panic. “Okay, we’re changing our plans,” I said, making my voice sound firmer than I felt. “We’re going back upstairs, all right? Just until it’s safe.”

“What about the car?” Lily asked, sounding frightened but surprisingly composed.

“We’ll get to the car soon, I promise,” I answered. “First, we need to come up with a better plan.”

We quickly turned around, retracing our steps through the kitchen and back into the hallway. I kept listening carefully to every strange sound coming from outside, hoping we wouldn’t hear footsteps getting closer to the door.

As we reached the stairs, I glanced back toward the front entrance. My heart missed a beat when I noticed the doorknob slowly turning, as though someone was trying it once more.

“Go, Lily,” I urged, gently pushing her toward the stairs.

She hurried upward faster than I’d ever seen her move, her little feet making almost no sound against the carpeted steps. I followed closely behind, my mind racing with possibilities.

We reached the top of the stairs and rushed into my bedroom, quietly closing the door behind us. I locked it, hoping it would be enough to protect us while I tried to figure out what to do next.
