As Jamal carried on with his testimony, I kept my gaze on the judge. I knew the truth was about to come out, and all I needed to do was wait for the right opportunity. Judge Whitman slowly turned through the documents, his face giving nothing away. Across the courtroom, my parents sat anxiously, barely able to contain their excitement as they waited for everything they wanted to fall into their hands.
Evelyn remained composed, as always. She waited until Jamal had finished speaking before rising to question him. Her manner was careful, and every question was delivered with precision.
“Mr. Price, you referred to these supposed margin loans. Can you explain exactly which accounts Cassidy used to obtain them?”
Jamal hesitated, a brief look of doubt appearing on his face.
“Well, they’re included in the documents we’ve submitted.”
Evelyn gave a slight nod, as though she understood.
“I see. And where did these documents come from? Were they obtained directly from the financial institutions, or did you acquire them through some other means?”
Jamal paused, briefly looking toward Caldwell as if hoping for assistance.
“They were…put together using several different sources.”
Evelyn immediately picked up on his answer.
“And those ‘different sources,’ Mr. Price, did they include Cassidy’s personal mail?”
His confidence began to slip.
“I…I can’t really say.”
Evelyn continued, her voice firm and unwavering.
“Isn’t it true that you gained access to Cassidy’s private information during a family gathering and then used that information to create these forged documents?”
The entire courtroom fell silent. Tension filled the room as Jamal shifted uneasily in his chair. His carefully maintained confidence was beginning to fall apart.
“I was only trying to help,” he muttered.
“Help?” Evelyn responded, sounding genuinely astonished. “By stealing someone’s identity and submitting fabricated evidence before a federal court?”
Judge Whitman lifted his hand, his expression turning serious.
“Mr. Price, I strongly advise you to answer the questions truthfully.”
Jamal said nothing. His silence revealed more than any answer could have.
Evelyn then faced the judge, remaining completely confident.
“Your Honor, we respectfully ask that these documents be excluded from evidence because of their fraudulent nature. In addition, we have legitimate documentation establishing Cassidy’s financial stability beyond any reasonable doubt.”
The judge gave a small nod, and Evelyn passed him a sealed folder. Unlike the paperwork presented by the other side, everything inside was authentic and supported by verifiable records.
Judge Whitman opened the folder and began examining its contents. His eyes moved across the pages, and his interest appeared to grow with every document he reviewed. After studying them for several moments, he finally looked up.
“Ms. Kensington, these records present an entirely different picture from the one Mr. Caldwell has attempted to establish.”
Evelyn offered a slight smile, knowing the evidence was speaking for itself.
“Your Honor, Cassidy Vale is neither financially irresponsible nor mentally incompetent. She has been targeted in a deliberate effort to take away her independence and gain control of her assets.”
The judge nodded, his position seemingly settled.
“I see no grounds for granting the conservatorship. This case is dismissed.”
A wave of relief came over me, as though a tremendous weight had finally been lifted from my shoulders. My parents and Brittany looked completely stunned. Everything they had planned was falling apart right in front of them. Jamal sank back into his chair, slowly realizing the seriousness of what he’d done.
As I walked out of the courtroom with Evelyn beside me, I experienced a feeling of victory I hadn’t expected. We’d won, but I understood that this was only one part of a much bigger fight.
There were still matters left unresolved, and I knew my family wasn’t going to walk away so easily. They would probably regroup and come up with another scheme. But for the moment, I finally had room to breathe and time to prepare myself for whatever might happen next.
