As Dana blocked the doorway, the heavy tension in the space was almost touchable. A storm of thoughts and questions rushed through my head, yet I forced myself to stay quiet. Making a scene wasn’t on my agenda—not yet, anyway. Declan’s gaze carried a heavy dose of guilt and helplessness, while Dana looked desperate to blend into the wallpaper.
Drawing in a slow breath, I spoke up. “Dana, would you mind giving my husband and me a moment alone?”
She gave a quick nod, setting the charger and glasses down on the nightstand. “I’ll wait just outside,” she murmured, casting one last look at Declan before slipping out.
Facing Declan, I concentrated on keeping my tone even. “What is going on here, Declan?”
He let out a deep sigh, turning his gaze away. “I know how this appears, but it’s entirely misunderstood.”
“Then explain it to me. Because from my perspective, it looks like you’ve been hiding a mountain of secrets.”
He paused, and I watched the internal battle play out in his eyes. “Dana is simply a friend, Maris. A close colleague. When the first episode happened, she stepped in to help. That’s the real reason she’s down as my emergency contact.”
“Why keep that from me? Don’t I have a right to know when something major like that happens?”
He rubbed his temples in frustration. “I didn’t want to pile more stress on you. You already carry plenty with your own career.”
“Deciding that for me wasn’t your place, Declan. We’re supposed to be partners—or so I believed.”
A thick silence settled over the room. While Declan lost himself in his thoughts, I scrambled to assemble the pieces of what I’d just discovered.
At last, he broke the quiet. “You’re right, I should have been honest from the start. Panic took over, and after that, finding the right moment just felt impossible.”
Nodding slowly, I tried to let his explanation sink in. “I need a little space to process all of this.”
He reached out to take my hand. “I promise to give you all the details. Just please, let’s avoid jumping to conclusions.”
Gently, I pulled my hand back. “I think both of us need some breathing room right now.”
Stepping out of the room, I carried a heart weighed down by hurt and confusion. Dana was waiting close by, her expression a blend of worry and remorse.
“I’m so sorry, Maris,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “Interfering in your marriage was never my intention.”
Apologies were the last thing I wanted to digest right now. “I just require some time.”
She nodded quietly, honoring my boundary.
I walked out of the hospital, my mind a whirlwind of racing thoughts. The city lights smeared together as I drove back home, every red light stretching into an eternity as I wondered what this meant for the two of us.
That evening, I stared up at the bedroom ceiling, replaying every gesture and every phrase in my head. I reflected on the years Declan and I had shared, marveling at how a single afternoon could rewrite everything.
I knew our story wasn’t finished; deeper truths were waiting to surface. But tonight, sleep was a necessity. Tomorrow would bring a new dawn, and perhaps a clearer perspective.
As I drifted off into a restless sleep, I knew for certain that this chapter was far from closed. There were still too many unanswered questions, and walking away without them wasn’t an option.
