After 6 years working abroad, I came home…

I nodded. Julian’s jaw tightened. “Who the hell do you think you are?” Harrison didn’t even glance his way. Instead, he simply handed me a thick folder. “Everything is completely in order.” I flipped it open. Inside lay copies of the deed, the county property records, tax statements, insurance papers, and something even more critical. A printed timeline. Every single payment I had ever wired toward the property. Every transfer made directly to my mother. Every utility bill paid. Every piece of documentation proving who truly owned the house and who did not. At the bottom of the page rested a single sheet with several highlighted lines. I looked straight at Harrison. “What is this?” “Your instructions.” I turned the page. Then, the pieces clicked into place. Harrison hadn’t shown up here to threaten them. He had come to prove that I didn’t even need to. Julian took a step down the steps. “You can’t just walk people onto this property and intimidate us.” Harrison finally raised his eyes to meet his. “I am not here to intimidate anyone.” He held up his phone. “I am here because my client has requested that we formally document the transfer of possession of her property.” Julian let out a sharp, nervous laugh. “Transfer of possession?” “Yes.” “This is our home.” “No,” Harrison said with absolute calm. “It isn’t.” Khloe stepped into view from behind Julian. She had changed clothes, now wearing a dark dress while holding a glass of wine. The moment she spotted Harrison, all the color drained straight from her face. “Who is he?” Julian stayed silent. Harrison shifted his gaze toward her. “Ms. Khloe?” She stared back, paralyzed. “Yes.” “My name is Harrison Vance. I represent the legal property owner.” Khloe’s eyes snapped over to me. “You actually hired a lawyer?” “I hired him years ago.” She swallowed hard. “Why?” I looked her dead in the eyes. “Because unlike you, I planned for the possibility that things could go wrong.” Her expression hardened like stone. “You’ve always thought you were better than everyone else.” That single sentence cut deeper than I ever imagined it would. Perhaps because there was a time when I would have gladly walked through fire for her. Back when we were children, Khloe used to sneak into my bed whenever a thunderstorm rolled through. She would grip my hand tightly and whisper that she was terrified. I would reassure her that nothing could ever hurt her because I was right there. Years later, I had crossed an ocean to carve out a life for myself. She had chosen to stay behind. And somewhere along the way between those two separate lives, we had become complete strangers. “I never thought I was better than you,” I said softly. “I simply thought you were family.” Khloe looked away. For a fleeting second, I caught a glimpse of something flashing across her features. Regret. Then, just as quickly, it vanished. Julian shoved his way between us. “This is completely absurd. They’ve lived under this roof for two years straight. You can’t just kick them out tonight.” Harrison flipped the folder open. “Mr. Julian, I am going to explain this precisely once.” Julian crossed his arms defiantly. Harrison pressed on. “This property is owned exclusively by Natalie.” “I know perfectly well what the deed says.” “Good.” “And her mother gave us permission to live here.” “Her mother held zero legal authority to transfer ownership or establish any valid interest in this property.” Julian’s jaw clenched tight. “We’ve maintained this house.” “Without a lease?” Absolute silence followed. “Have you paid rent?” Another heavy silence. “Do you possess a single written agreement granting you ownership, tenancy, or any other legally recognized interest?” Julian glanced at Khloe. Khloe glanced back at Julian. Neither uttered a word. Harrison snapped the folder shut. “Then this conversation is officially concluded.” Julian’s expression warped into panic. “You cannot do this.” Harrison checked his wristwatch. “It is 9:03.” He turned his attention to me. “Shall we proceed?” I stared at the house. My house. The very house I had purchased to ensure my mother could wake up every morning without the crushing weight of bills. A home with a wide kitchen because she loved cooking. A spacious backyard because she always dreamed of tending to roses. A spare guest room because I told her I wanted everyone in our lives to have a reason to come back home. And instead, my mother had been forced to scrub grease off the patio tile on her hands and knees. I took a deep, steadying breath. “Yes.” Harrison nodded once. He turned toward the white pickup truck parked at the curb. Two figures stepped out. They weren’t police officers. They were professional locksmiths. Julian stared at them in horror. “No.” I remained silent. The lead locksmith walked steadily toward the front door. Julian threw himself into his path. “You are not laying a hand on those locks.” Harrison raised a single hand. “Mr. Julian, step aside immediately.” “I am not moving an inch.” “Then you will be removed through the appropriate legal channels.” Julian looked back at me, desperate. “You are really willing to do this to your own sister?” Something inside my chest finally fractured. “My sister?” Khloe’s eyes welled up with sudden tears. “Natalie…” I turned to face her directly. “Don’t.” She froze. “Don’t speak to me as if everything is normal here.” She lowered her gaze to the floor. “You just don’t understand.” “Then enlighten me.” Total silence. “Explain why my mother was scrubbing your patio floor.” Nothing. “Explain why she was wearing clothes that looked like they belonged in a garbage bag.” Still nothing. “Explain why she was too terrified to tell me the truth.” Khloe wiped a stray tear from her cheek. “She wasn’t afraid of you.” “Then who on earth was she afraid of?” The suffocating silence answered the question for her. I looked back at Julian. He was staring fixedly at the dirt. And in that instant, a terrifying realization dawned on me. This was never just about a house. There was something far darker they were hiding. Something much bigger than I realized. I looked over at Harrison. “Did you happen to find anything else?” He hesitated. Just for a fraction of a second. But I caught it. “What is it?” He glanced toward Khloe. Then back at Julian. Finally, his eyes returned to mine. “I think you deserve to hear this directly from your mother first.” My heart dropped straight into my stomach. “What did you uncover?” Harrison lowered his voice to a grave murmur. “There are financial transactions tied to your mother’s accounts that we simply haven’t been able to account for.” My stomach knotted tight. “How much are we talking about?” He didn’t answer right away. “Enough that I strongly advise against confronting either of them until we’ve reviewed every last detail.” Julian’s face drained of all remaining color. Khloe looked utterly terrified. And right then, I knew the bitter truth. They weren’t shaking because they were losing a house. They were shaking because of what I was about to uncover.
