PART 2
Julian’s grin vanished the second the initial dark SUV pulled in behind my vehicle. A second one parked right next to it. A third pulled up directly across the street. None of them had flashing lights running. None of them required them. The doors swung open almost in strict succession. A tall lady dressed in a navy suit emerged first, holding a leather portfolio. Following her came Harrison Vance, the lawyer who had handled my affairs over the past six years. Two uniformed Travis County deputy sheriffs came next, accompanied by a locksmith pushing a wheeled tool chest.
The music inside the residence was still playing. Mirthful sounds echoed through the wide-open doorway. Julian abruptly stopped smiling. He glanced from Harrison to the deputies and finally back to me. “What… what is the meaning of this?” Harrison spoke up before I had the chance. “Good evening. I am Harrison Vance, legal counsel representing the property owner.” Julian tightened his grip around his glass. “I am well aware of who owns this property.” “Are you really?” Harrison inquired.
Khloe stepped out from behind Julian. The moment she spotted the deputies, all the color drained from her face. “Natalie, what have you done?” I stepped out of my car. “What I should have taken care of two years ago.”
Several attendees had now gathered behind them. Individuals who had likely spent the evening drinking my wine, lounging on furniture I had paid for, inside the house I bought specifically so my mother could finally live free from financial stress.
Julian lowered his tone. “You are making a scene and embarrassing us.” I almost chuckled. “Embarrassing you?” I walked in his direction. “You made my sixty-two-year-old mother scrub your outdoor kitchen while down on her knees.”
His guests went completely quiet. Khloe instantly shook her head. “That is not what happened at all.” “Then explain it to them.” “Natalie—” “Tell everyone why Mom sleeps in that tiny room near the garage while you two occupy the master bedroom.”
One woman inside slowly set her wineglass down. Julian’s jaw clenched tight. “This is strictly a private family matter.” “No,” Harrison stated calmly. “It turned into a legal matter several hours ago.” He unzipped the leather portfolio. Julian stared at it intently. Harrison pulled out a stack of documents. “The real estate at this location is owned exclusively by Natalie Mercer. There exists no lease agreement between Ms. Mercer and either of you. There is no rental contract. There is no documentation of rent ever being paid.”
Julian let out a sharp laugh. “I have already addressed this. We have established residency rights.” “And that matter will be addressed according to the law,” Harrison replied. “However, mere residency does not magically confer ownership.”
Julian turned his gaze toward me. “Did you bring sheriffs here just to intimidate us?” One deputy stepped forward. “We are simply here to maintain order, sir.” “Then tell her she cannot kick us out onto the street!” The deputy’s expression remained unchanged. “I am not your legal counsel.”
That reply chipped away at some of Julian’s bravado. Khloe shoved past him. “Natalie, please.” It marked the first time she had uttered the word please. “We are sisters.” I stared right at her. “You remembered that awfully fast.”
Her eyes welled up with tears. “Mom told us we could stay.” “For a duration of two weeks.” “We had nowhere else to go.” “That was two whole years ago.” “We were struggling heavily.” “So you took over her bedroom?” Khloe averted her eyes. “So you seized control of the money I sent her?” Her expression shifted.
Julian immediately cut in. “Those funds went toward household expenses.” I turned my attention toward him. “Three thousand dollars every single month.” He offered no reply. “Thirty-six thousand dollars annually.” Still nothing. “Seventy-two thousand dollars across two years.”
One of their guests quietly reached for her purse. Then another followed suit. Khloe noticed the movement. “Please do not leave,” she pleaded. No one paid attention. Within moments, people began shuffling toward the exit. Julian’s humiliation was playing out right before him, and I could tell he despised that more than anything else. “You planned all of this,” he hissed. “No. You did. I simply came home early.” That silenced him completely.
Harrison handed me a paper. “There is an additional detail you need to be aware of.” I glanced down. It was a bank authorization form. My mother’s name was typed across the top. Beneath it sat another name: Khloe Mercer, my sister. I looked at Harrison. “What is this document?” “When you informed me they had gained access to your mother’s cards, I reached out to the financial institution using the authorization Martha signed years back allowing your office to assist with suspected financial exploitation.”
Khloe’s breathing pattern shifted. “That information is private.” Harrison paid her no mind. “There have been unauthorized transfers.” My stomach tightened up. “What kind of transfers?” He flipped to the second page. The initial sum was $4,800. Followed by $7,200. Then $12,500. Followed by another $9,000. My eyes scanned down the sheet. Payment after payment. Transfers I never authorized. “Where did all this money originate from?” Harrison looked straight at me. “The account you funded for your mother.”
I slowly lifted my gaze toward Khloe. She took a step backward. “Natalie, let me explain.” “How much was it?” “Please—” “HOW MUCH?” The entire street seemed to fall utterly silent. Harrison provided the answer. “Based on what we have verified so far, just over fifty-one thousand dollars.”
A cold sensation washed over me. Not because of the money itself—I could always earn more. Rather, it was because my mother had been kneeling on stone with reddened hands while the very people draining her accounts sat inside her home drinking scotch. “Where is the cash now?” Khloe began weeping. Julian stepped right in front of her. “We utilized it.” “For what purpose?” “Standard living expenses.”
I glanced toward the driveway. A black Mercedes sat parked next to Khloe’s SUV. Then I looked at Julian’s luxury watch. His tailored clothing. The party. The liquor bottles visible through the windows. “Living expenses.”
Julian’s face hardened. “You fail to understand what it takes when you are trying to maintain a specific standard of living.” I stared at him in disbelief for several seconds. Then a smile crept across my face. It was far from a happy smile. “A standard?” “Natalie,” Khloe whispered. “Our mother was scrubbing grease off a counter while you two maintained a standard?” Khloe buried her face in her hands.
Harrison gently touched my arm. “There is more.” Julian snapped his head in his direction. “What else could there be?” Harrison ignored him entirely and handed me another sheet. I read the initial line. Then the second. Then I stopped dead.
My mother’s signature appeared at the bottom. Except something looked off. I knew her handwriting intimately, having seen it on birthday cards throughout my entire life. This signature looked almost authentic. Almost. “What is this paper?” “A property-related document submitted roughly eight months ago.” My heart began hammering against my ribs. “What property?” “This exact one.”
I looked up. Julian froze completely. Khloe whispered his name aloud. “Julian…” Harrison pressed on. “It appears someone attempted to manufacture paperwork implying Martha held an ownership stake in this house.” “Yet she holds no such stake.” “Correct.” “I purchased it. My name is the only one on the deed.” “Correct.” “Then why would anyone pull a stunt like this?” Harrison glanced toward Julian. “That is precisely what we intend to find out.”
Julian finally snapped. “This is utterly ridiculous!” He hurled his glass onto the lawn, where it shattered into pieces. A deputy instantly stepped forward. “Sir, keep your hands visible where we can see them.” Julian froze in place. Khloe burst into sobs. “Stop! Everyone just stop!” I barely registered her plea, keeping my eyes fixed on the document. “Mom never signed this.” Harrison’s voice remained quiet. “We strongly suspect she did not.”
My sister collapsed onto the front steps. That reaction told me everything I needed to know. I walked in her direction. “Khloe.” She refused to lift her head. “Did you know about this?” Absolute silence. “Look right at me.” Slowly, she raised her face. I had never witnessed my sister looking quite that terrified. “I was unaware at first.” My stomach dropped lower. “At first?” Julian yelled from behind me. “Shut your mouth right now, Khloe.”
The deputy immediately inserted himself between us. Khloe gazed at her husband, then back at me, and something inside her finally broke. “He told me you were never coming back.” Julian’s complexion turned stark white. “Khloe.” “He claimed that once enough time passed, we could claim this house as our own.” I could barely catch my breath for a second. “He told me Mom would eventually sign whatever paperwork we required.” “That is a complete lie!” Julian shouted. Khloe stood up. “You told me Natalie had plenty of money!” “Stop talking right now!” “You insisted she would never care about a single house!” “KHLOE!”
The deputy raised a hand. “Sir.” Julian quieted down. Harrison continued making notes. I stared intently at my sister. “Did Mom actually sign anything?” Khloe shook her head frantically. “No.” “Then whose signature is this?” Her eyes drifted toward Julian. That confirmation was all I needed.
Julian spun toward the house entrance, but the deputy blocked his path. “Where do you think you are going, sir?” “Inside.” “Remain right here.” “This is my home!” I stepped closer to him. “No, it is not.” For the first time all evening, I raised the deed high in my hand. “It never was.”
Julian looked as though he wanted to rip it straight from my grip. Instead, Harrison stepped directly between us. “From this point onward, all communications concerning this property must go through me.”
The locksmith opened up his tool chest. Julian stared at him in disbelief. “What is he doing?” Harrison replied, “Securing portions of the property the legal owner is entitled to lock down tonight while remaining occupancy issues get resolved through proper legal channels.”
Julian let out a bitter laugh. “So this little stunt does not actually clear us out tonight.” Harrison remained unfazed. “Nobody claimed we are bypassing legal procedures.”
Julian’s arrogant smile slowly crept back. He figured he had secured a minor victory. “Exactly.” Then he looked directly at me. “I will be sleeping in that master bedroom tonight.” I said nothing. “And tomorrow as well.” Still nothing. “And likely for weeks while your attorney plays games with paperwork.” He inched closer. “You honestly should have just stayed in Dubai.”
I looked at him, then over at Harrison. Harrison gave me a subtle nod. Because Julian still failed to grasp the reality of the situation. This was no longer solely about a house.
I pulled out my mobile phone. At 9:17 p.m., I contacted the bank. At 9:23 p.m., every single card linked to the account I funded for my mother was frozen pending an active investigation. At 9:31 p.m., I stripped Khloe and Julian of all emergency contact privileges, household service authorizations, and accounts they had managed to attach themselves to. At 9:46 p.m., Harrison filed preservation requests for financial logs connected to the missing funds. And at 10:08 p.m., my mother phoned me from the hotel.
“Natalie?” Her tone sounded uneasy. “I am here, Mom.” “Are you safe?” I closed my eyes tightly. She was sitting there worrying about my safety. After everything they had put her through, her primary concern remained me. “I am safe.” An awkward silence followed. Then she whispered something I completely did not anticipate. “There is a detail I neglected to tell you.” I opened my eyes. “What is it?” “Regarding Julian.”
My gaze shifted across the street. He was standing by the front window, peering out at me. “What about him?” My mother started crying softly. “Three months ago, he drove me down to a lawyer’s office.” Every muscle throughout my body tightened. “For what reason?” “He claimed you asked him to assist with updating the house paperwork.” My heart completely skipped a beat. “I never made any such request.” “I realize that now.” “Mom, what exactly did you sign?” She offered no answer. “Mom?” “I am unsure.”
Across the street, Julian abruptly stepped away from the window view. Then I heard my mother whisper: “However, Natalie… right before we departed that office, I overheard the attorney offering Julian congratulations.” “Congratulating him for what accomplishment?” She took a shaky breath. “For becoming the beneficiary of something far more valuable than the house itself.”
I stared intently at the darkened window where Julian had just been standing. The residence possessed a value of six hundred thousand dollars. Meaning whatever he attempted to strip away from my mother… was worth vastly more. Much more indeed.
And suddenly it all clicked into place why Julian appeared so supremely confident upon my arrival. He had not merely been squatting in my mother’s home. He had been patiently waiting for something. And I began to suspect that my unexpected return from Dubai had not merely disrupted a casual family arrangement. It had derailed an active plan. A plan that was nearing its final stages.
PART 3 — THE DOCUMENT MY MOTHER NEVER MEANT TO SIGN
“Something worth more than the house.” My mother’s words echoed continuously in my mind. Across the street, the window curtains shifted slightly. Julian was watching me once again. Only this time, I was no longer observing an arrogant freeloader refusing to vacate my property. I was looking at an individual who may have spent months meticulously setting up a conspiracy I had yet to fully grasp.
“Mom,” I said cautiously, “do you happen to recall the attorney’s name?” She paused for a moment. “No. But I remember the building quite well.” “Where was it located?” “Downtown, situated near the courthouse. It featured a large brass plaque beside the elevator.” “Anything else stand out?” “I believe the lawyer’s first name was Stephen.”
That was not an abundance of details. Yet it provided enough traction to begin digging. “Did they supply you with copies of any paperwork you executed?” “No.” “Did Julian provide any?” “No.” “Did Khloe accompany you there?” Another hesitation. “No, she did not.”
That revelation caught me off guard. “It was exclusively you and Julian?” “Yes.” I glanced back toward the house. “Why chose not to mention this to Khloe?” “Julian assured me she was already informed.” Naturally, he did. I closed my eyes in frustration. “What precisely did he tell you prior to your signature?” “He claimed you were restructuring matters because you were stationed overseas. He stated that if anything ever happened to you, a trusted person needed to be present in America to manage the property.”
My stomach twisted painfully. “He utilized my name?” “Yes.” “He claimed I requested it?” “Yes.” “Mom, did he present any correspondence from me? An email or letter?” “No.” She began weeping once more. “I really should have called you.” “Mom, stop.” “I should have known better.” “Listen closely to me. We are going to uncover precisely what took place.”
I wanted to spare her from carrying an ounce more fear tonight. “Get some rest. Lock the hotel door securely. Do not open it for anyone except the nurse or myself.” “Understood.” “And one more thing, Mom?” “Yes?” “Do not share any of this with Khloe or Julian.”
Her voice dropped to a tiny whisper. “Is Khloe in trouble?” I looked over at my sister through the front window. “I cannot say for certain yet.”
I terminated the phone call and strode directly over to Harrison. He was deep in conversation with the woman in the navy suit. “I need you.” Something in my expression made him cut off mid-sentence. “What occurred?” I relayed everything to him. Every single detail. The attorney, the paperwork, Julian claiming I requested the changes, the congratulatory remarks, and the mysterious beneficiary status.
Harrison listened without interrupting once. When I concluded, his entire demeanor had shifted. “Did Martha happen to recall the lawyer’s name?” “Stephen. Possibly.” “General location?” “Downtown near the courthouse.”
He turned to the female associate beside him. “Rachel.” She was already opening her laptop lid. “I will initiate a search.” “Searching for what specifically?” I inquired. “Recorded instruments, probate-related filings, trust documents, corporate entries, anything linked to Martha’s name.”
Julian suddenly pushed the front door open. “Are you folks planning on camping out on the lawn all night long?” I pivoted around. Harrison calmly murmured, “Do not engage with him.” However, Julian clearly wanted a confrontation. He stepped out onto the porch. “You made your dramatic point, Natalie. Now head back to your hotel.” “My hotel?” “Wherever it is you are holled up.” He flashed a grin. “We can deal with this nonsense tomorrow.”
Something about his sheer confidence felt off. He had just discovered his financial access points were frozen. He knew Harrison was actively probing the questionable signature. He knew deputies overheard Khloe admitting he plotted to seize the home. Yet he remained remarkably composed and smiling. Why?
Then I spotted it. He was gripping his phone tightly. The screen kept illuminating repeatedly. Someone was attempting to call him over and over. Julian rejected the call. Five seconds later, it rang again. He dismissed it once more. And again.
The smirk vanished for a split second. Harrison picked up on it as well. “Expecting someone important?” I asked. “None of your damn business.” His phone chimed yet again, prompting him to retreat inside.
Rachel looked up from her computer screen. “I have located something relevant.” Harrison and I moved closer to her. “What is it?” “Your mother’s full legal name is Martha Elaine Mercer, correct?” “Yes.” “And her date of birth is…?” I confirmed it. Rachel typed briskly. Her expression tightened up. “Interesting development.”
I already detested that word. “What is it?” “There is a limited liability company that was registered eighteen months ago.” “So what?” “Your mother is listed as an official member.” I stared blankly at her. “My mother has never owned a business in her life.” “Well, on paper, she apparently does.”
Harrison leaned in closer. “Name of the company?” Rachel pivoted the laptop screen toward us. MJM Residential Holdings LLC. I read the letters twice. “What do those initials stand for?” Rachel did not reply. She did not have to. Martha. Julian. Mercer. My mother’s initial, Julian’s initial, and our shared family surname.
“Who registered the entity?” Rachel clicked the mouse. Then paused. “Julian Cross.” I felt my pulse pounding in my throat. “What assets does this company own?” “I am checking right now.”
She queried an alternate database. Ten seconds ticked by. Twenty. Then she drew in a sharp breath. “Harrison.” He leaned in further. “Talk to me.” “There are property filings tied directly to it.”
My stomach plummeted. “My house?” “Not quite.” “What is that supposed to mean?” Rachel looked up at me. “It means we need eyes on the underlying instruments before jumping to conclusions.” “Rachel, spill it.” She hesitated. “It appears there was an attempt to leverage Martha’s supposed interest in real estate assets as collateral.” I stared at her in shock. “Collateral for what exactly?” “A commercial business loan.” “For how much?” She scrolled down. Then stated the figure out loud. “$410,000.”
For several long seconds, nobody uttered a word. I gazed back at my house. My mother’s home. The property I had acquired outright with cash. Zero mortgage. Zero debt. No banking institution held any legitimate claim to it. Or at least, no valid claim.
“Did they manage to secure the funds?” “We cannot confirm that yet.” “Can someone even take out a loan against a property they do not legally own?” “Not legitimately,” Harrison noted. “Then how is it possible?” “Fraudulent documentation, misrepresentations, forged signatures. Occasionally a lender overlooks a red flag. Sometimes an insider aids the process.”
I instantly recalled Mom’s previous statement. The attorney congratulating Julian. “Stephen.” Harrison looked at me sharply. “What did you say?” “The lawyer.”
Rachel was typing furiously once more. “Running a search for attorneys named Stephen tied to the filing.”
Julian’s phone began ringing again indoors. Then the front door swung open. However, it was not Julian who emerged. It was Khloe. She stepped outside onto the porch alone. Her makeup was smeared down her cheeks in streaks. “Natalie.” I stood my ground without moving. She walked over toward me. “I need to make a confession.”
Harrison quietly snapped his folder shut. “Keep in mind anything you state could become relevant to legal proceedings.” Khloe looked utterly defeated. “I frankly do not care anymore.” She glanced back toward the house door. Then whispered, “Julian lied directly to me as well.” “About what specific thing?” “The loan money.” “Which money are you referring to?” Her eyes flicked toward Rachel’s laptop. So she was already in the loop. “The borrowed funds,” she whispered. My stomach constricted. “You knew about the $410,000?” “No! He told me Mom was investing capital alongside him.” “Investing in what enterprise?” Khloe rubbed her arms nervously. “A real estate development.” “Located where?” “I have no clue.” “You expect me to swallow that story?” “I am telling you the absolute truth.” “After two years of letting Mom live like an unpaid servant?” She flinched visibly. “I know.” “No, Khloe, I genuinely do not think you grasp the gravity of it.” “Natalie, please understand.” “Did you drain her personal accounts?” Khloe broke down crying. “I utilized the plastic cards occasionally.” “That is not what I asked you.” “Did you siphon money directly from her balance?” “At times.” “To the tune of fifty-one thousand dollars worth of ‘occasions’?” Her face crumpled. “I honestly did not realize it had scaled that high.”
I almost laughed bitterly. “You do not accidentally blow through fifty-one thousand dollars.” “Julian kept promising we would pay everything back.” “Using what funds?” “The development profits.” There that elusive phrase was again. “What development project?” “I genuinely do not know!” “Then what were you expecting to turn a profit from?” Khloe cast her gaze toward the house. “I was never permitted to ask questions.”
That specific sentence shifted the dynamic entirely. “Permitted?” She dropped her voice lower. “Julian handles every single detail.” “Khloe, what kind of trouble has he dragged himself into?” “I am in the dark.” “Then why are you shivering with fear?” She looked square at me. Truly looked at me. “Because two months ago, I stumbled upon a second phone.”
Harrison stepped closer to listen. “What contents were on it?” “I was unable to unlock the screen.” “Then how can you be sure it holds any significance?” “Because Julian caught me holding it in my hands.” Her voice trembled heavily. “I have never witnessed him display that level of rage.” “What did he do?” “He wrenched it away from me and warned that if I ever touched it again, I would live to regret it.”
My lingering anger toward Khloe did not vanish. Yet for the first time, I caught a glimpse of something beneath her arrogant exterior. Pure, unadulterated fear. “Where is that phone kept?” “I do not know.” “Think carefully.” “He stores a locked case inside the study office.” “The office inside my house?” She nodded slowly. “I never possessed the combination.”
I looked over at Harrison. He grasped the implications immediately. “We do not touch a single item until we establish what you are legally entitled to access and whether evidence preservation protocols apply here.”
At that moment, Rachel spoke up. “I located Stephen.” We all pivoted toward her. She rotated the laptop display around. An attorney profile materialized on screen. Stephen Caldwell. Caldwell Property & Estate Law. Downtown Austin.
I turned my phone screen toward Khloe. “Are you familiar with this man?” Her expression altered instantly. “Oh my god.” “You recognize him?” “He has been inside this house before.” “When?” “On multiple occasions.” “During the parties?” “No.” She shook her head vigorously. “He always arrived late at night.” “How late are we talking?” “Ten. Eleven. Sometimes past midnight.”
Harrison’s expression turned severe. “For what purpose?” “Julian claimed they were collaborating on investment strategies.”
Just then, headlights swept across the end of the street. A dark sedan turned and headed down our block. Khloe tracked its movement. And froze stiff. “What is it?” I demanded. She grabbed my arm tightly. “Natalie.” “What?” “That vehicle belongs to him.” “Whose vehicle?” She stared as the sedan slowed to a crawl right beside the curb. “Stephen Caldwell’s car.”
The automobile came to a complete halt. The driver-side door swung open. An older man with graying hair, dressed in a sharp suit, emerged carrying a leather briefcase. He took three strides toward the front of the house. Then he spotted Harrison. Then Rachel. Then the deputies. Then finally, myself.
He stopped dead in his tracks. For a single fleeting second, pure panic flashed across his features. He pivoted on his heel to retreat. “Mr. Caldwell?” Harrison called out sharply. Stephen kept walking. Quickening his pace. “Stephen!” Julian shouted from the front doorway.
That turned out to be the worst possible move he could make. Stephen halted. Everyone heard it loud and clear. Everyone witnessed Julian standing right there. Julian recognized his blunder instantly. Stephen glared at him with absolute fury.
One of the deputies stepped forward. “Sir, we need you to remain right here for a moment.” Stephen turned around stiffly. “I am under no legal obligation to converse with you people.” “That is technically correct.” “Then I am leaving.”
He reached his car door handle. Before he could pull it open, Harrison spoke up. “Mr. Caldwell, tomorrow morning we will be formally subpoenaing records regarding documents supposedly executed by Martha Mercer.”
Stephen’s hand froze on the handle. “Who?” That single word prompted Khloe to gasp aloud. Because Stephen had visited this residence multiple times. He knew precisely who Martha was. Harrison offered a faint, humorless smile. “Fascinating response.”
Stephen yanked his car door open. Then I stepped forward. “My mother remembers you quite well.” He glanced back at me. “And she distinctly remembers signing paperwork inside your office.” Total silence. “She also recalls you offering Julian congratulations.”
Stephen’s face tightened into a hard mask. I took another step closer. “What exactly did you congratulate him for achieving?”
He slid into his vehicle. The engine roared to life. Seconds later, he sped down the street and vanished into the night.
Nobody uttered a word. Then Harrison’s cell phone rang shrilly. He answered on the first ring. “Harrison Vance speaking.” His expression shifted dramatically almost instantly. “Say that again.” I watched him closely. “What did he find?” He held up a single finger. “Forward it to my inbox right now.”
He dropped the phone away from his ear. “What happened?” Harrison looked straight at me. “That was an asset-tracing investigator I employ.” My stomach tightened further. “And?” “He tracked where a portion of those loan funds went.” “Where?” “Not toward any real estate development.”
Khloe clapped her hands over her mouth. “Then where did it go?” Harrison’s phone buzzed with an incoming file. He scanned the document quickly, then looked straight at my sister. “Roughly $180,000 was transferred directly into a private account controlled by Julian.” Khloe whispered, “I knew it all along.”
However, Harrison was not finished reading. “Forty thousand went toward vehicle acquisitions.” I glanced over at the parked Mercedes. “Another sixty-two thousand appears to have settled personal debts.” “And the remainder of the funds?” Harrison stared grimly at the screen. “That constitutes our primary issue.” “What issue?” “The remaining funds bounced through a web of multiple intermediary accounts.” “Where did they ultimately land?” “We are still tracing the trail.”
Julian was no longer lingering by the doorway. I looked toward the house interior. The living room area stood completely vacant. “Where did Julian go?” Khloe spun around anxiously. “Julian?” Nothing. She bolted toward the entryway. “Julian!”
One deputy sprinted after her. Then we heard a roaring engine. Not originating from the front driveway. It came from behind the house. Khloe stopped dead in her tracks. “The detached garage.”
An automobile accelerated rapidly somewhere beyond the rear fence line. Julian had slipped away.
Harrison immediately reached for his phone. However, my attention was no longer fixed on the street. I was staring through the wide-open front door. Something white lay resting on the living room floorboards. A lone envelope.
Khloe walked toward it cautiously. “Do not touch it,” Harrison warned sharply. We approached with care. My name was scrawled across the front facade in block letters. NATALIE.
My blood ran instantly cold. “Was that resting there previously?” I asked. Khloe shook her head frantically. “No.”
Harrison snapped a photo of it before gingerly opening the flap. Inside sat a single sheet of paper. Just one sentence was typed across the middle. I read it over. Then read it a second time.
IF NATALIE COMES HOME BEFORE OCTOBER 14, EVERYTHING CHANGES.
I looked up at Harrison. “What significance does October fourteenth hold?” He provided no answer. Because Khloe had suddenly turned ghastly pale. I whipped around toward her. “You possess insider knowledge.”
She backed away slowly. “Khloe.” “I wasn’t supposed to disclose anything.” “Disclose what exactly?” Her lips quivered violently. “Julian kept hammering on about October fourteenth.” “For what reason?” “He referred to it as the day we would finally achieve freedom.” “Freedom from what?”
She stared right at me, horror-struck. Then whispered: “From Mom.”
And suddenly, the missing money was no longer the most terrifying element of this ordeal. Neither was the forged paperwork. Nor the stolen house. Because October 14 was a mere five weeks away. And whatever Julian had orchestrated for that specific date involved my mother directly.
“From Mom.” Khloe’s words seemed to suck every ounce of sound right out of the street. I stared her down. “What is that supposed to imply?” “I do not know the exact details.” “Do not pull that card now.” “Natalie—” “Do not sit there claiming ignorance after dropping a statement like that.”
Khloe’s hands shook uncontrollably. “Julian never spelled out the full picture to me.” “Then relay whatever he did explain.”
She glanced toward the road where her husband’s vehicle had vanished. “He kept repeating that October fourteenth would resolve all our ongoing issues.” “What issues?” “The mounting debt. The property. Everything.”
Harrison closed the distance between us. “Did he ever reference Martha’s estate?” Khloe hesitated briefly. “Once.” My stomach violently knotted up. “What did he say?” “We were arguing over finances. I told him we could not sustain living the way we were.” “And his response?” “He said, ‘It will not matter after October fourteenth because Martha’s estate will take care of all of it.’”
I felt physically ill. “My mother is alive and breathing.” “I know she is.” “Then why on earth was he talking about inheriting her estate?” “I challenged him with that exact question.” “What was his reply?” Khloe swallowed hard. “He told me I worried far too much.”
Harrison whipped out his phone and dialed a contact immediately. I turned my back and dialed the hotel directly. The front desk picked up on the second ring. “This is Natalie Mercer. My mother, Martha Mercer, is currently occupying one of your executive suites. I need immediate verification that she is secure.” “One moment please, ma’am.” The pause lasted perhaps fifteen seconds. It felt like an eternity. “Ms. Mercer?” “Yes?” “Your mother is safely inside her suite. Her private nurse is still with her.”
My knees nearly buckled beneath me out of sheer relief. “Do not grant access to that room to anyone unless I personally clear it.” “Understood completely.” “And please dispatch hotel security to station themselves on her floor immediately.” “Right away, ma’am.”
I terminated the call. Harrison was already striding toward me. “We are relocating her tonight.” “At this hour?” “Tonight.” “To where?” “Somewhere Julian has zero chance of tracking down.”
Khloe looked completely shattered. “You genuinely believe he would harm Mom?” I turned to face her dead-on. “You tell me the answer.” She remained silent. That lack of denial terrified me far more than a flat rejection ever could.
Within thirty minutes, Harrison secured an alternate accommodation under heightened privacy protocols. I phoned Mom to inform her we were switching locations once more. I withheld the underlying reasons for now. At 11:34 p.m., I watched her settle safely into the new suite. The nurse assisted her onto the sofa. Mom looked completely exhausted. “What happened with the house?” she inquired softly. “We are managing the situation.” “And what about Khloe?” “She is secure.”
Mom nodded slowly. Then she looked up at me. “And Julian?” I sat down right beside her on the cushions. “Mom, I need you to rack your brain and tell me everything you recall about October fourteenth.”
Her brow furrowed in concentration. “October fourteenth?” “Has Julian ever brought up that date in conversation?” She thought deeply. Then her expression shifted. “Wait… what?” “What is it?” “I have a scheduled appointment.” My heart hammered once more. “What kind of appointment?” “Julian arranged it for me.” “For what purpose?” “He claimed it was mandatory for some insurance documentation.”
Harrison and I exchanged a sharp glance. “What specific variety of medical evaluation?” “He stated it was a routine insurance checkup.”
Harrison snapped a quick photo of the calendar entry displayed on her phone. Then he inquired, “Martha, has anyone recently tried convincing you that you are experiencing memory issues?” She stared at him blankly. “No, of course not.” “Has Julian?”
She reflected on the question for several seconds. “On occasion.” “What sorts of things does he say?” “Minor instances.” “Such as?” “He will claim I forgot portions of a conversation we had.” “Did you actually forget?” “I do not believe so.”
She massaged her temples. “He would occasionally relocate items and insist I misplaced them. Other times he claimed I agreed to certain arrangements when I had zero recollection of agreeing.”
Khloe broke down crying across the room. I pivoted to look at her. She stood lingering near the doorway. “I personally witnessed him pull that stunt.” Mom stared at her in shock. “What did you say?” Khloe covered her mouth with trembling hands. “I saw him intentionally hide your car keys inside the pantry once.”
Mom gazed at her open-mouthed. “Then when you failed to locate them, he turned to me and insisted your cognitive memory was rapidly declining.”
My mother looked utterly devastated. “Why on earth didn’t you warn me?” “I don’t know, I was too cowardly!” “Khloe.” “I was deeply terrified of him!” Mom’s eyes filled with fresh tears. “You stood by and allowed me to believe I was losing my own mind.”
Khloe slumped heavily into a nearby chair. “I am so sorry.” Mom turned her face away. That betrayal cut deeper than the stolen money. I could see it written all over her face.
For months, Julian had not merely been financially exploiting her. He had been systematically gaslighting her into doubting her own reality. And Khloe had sat back and watched it happen.
Harrison addressed us carefully. “A formal cognitive assessment can potentially be weaponized in legal proceedings regarding someone’s competence to manage financial or legal affairs. We cannot state for a fact that this was Julian’s ultimate objective, but coupled with everything else uncovered tonight, we must review those records immediately.”
“Then secure them,” I urged. “I will make it a priority.”
Mom suddenly whispered, “There is one more appointment listed.” I spun back around. “What do you mean?” She handed the phone back to me and pointed at the screen. October 14. 2:00 p.m. CALDWELL PROPERTY & ESTATE LAW. Stephen Caldwell. The exact same attorney.
My skin prickled with goosebumps. Morning: cognitive assessment. Afternoon: estate planning attorney. All scheduled for the exact same day. “What was supposed to take place there?” Mom shook her head slowly. “Julian told me we would finalize the remaining insurance paperwork.”
Harrison stared intently at the digital calendar schedule. “This sequence of events does not look coincidental in the slightest.”
Then Mom uttered a final piece of information that made all of us freeze in our tracks. “Julian posed a rather peculiar question to me last week.” “What kind of question?” “He asked whether you would inherit everything should something unfortunate happen to me.”
My mouth went completely dry. “And how did you respond?” “I told him the objective truth.” “What truth specifically?” “That both you and Khloe are named beneficiaries in my will.”
Khloe looked up sharply. “Hold on, Mom, you do not possess enough liquid assets to cover all these massive loans.” Mom frowned in confusion. “What on earth are you talking about?” “The $410,000 loan. Julian kept insisting your estate would cover the balance.”
My mother looked entirely bewildered. “I do not possess four hundred thousand dollars to my name.”
Harrison slowly pivoted toward me. “Perhaps Julian operated under the assumption that she did.”
I recalled what Mom mentioned earlier about the lawyer congratulating Julian for becoming the beneficiary of something vastly more valuable than the house itself. “Harrison.” “I remember.” “Track down every single insurance policy linked to Mom’s name.” He gave a firm nod.
The search dragged on until nearly two in the morning. Nobody attempted to sleep. Rachel worked tirelessly from her laptop set up on the dining table while Harrison made a series of urgent calls. Khloe sat in isolation near the windowpane. Mom finally drifted off to sleep inside the bedroom.
At 2:17 a.m., Rachel abruptly stopped typing. I rose to my feet. “Did you find anything?” She glanced over at Harrison prior to answering. “I located one policy.” I stepped closer. “What is the payout value?” She checked the screen. “Two million dollars.”
Khloe shot to her feet with a gasp. “What did you just say?” I stood paralyzed, entirely unable to speak. “Who is listed as the primary beneficiary?” Rachel kept reading down the file details. “Originally Natalie Mercer and Khloe Mercer, fifty percen
