The Other Half of the Moon…

“Mom?”

The man’s voice stopped Mara cold.

She turned.

For one impossible second, she saw him as he had been twenty-five years ago: eighteen, laughing, reckless, with snow caught in his dark hair.

Then the years settled back over his face.

Daniel.

Her son.

The boy she had buried in her heart when he vanished without a word.

The boy who was now standing in front of her.

The coffee trembled in his hand.

“Mara,” he whispered. “What did you just call her?”

The little girl stared up at him.

Then she looked at Mara.

“Mom says your name is Daniel.”

Mara’s blood ran cold.

Daniel slowly lowered the coffee.

“What did you say?”

The girl pointed at him.

“Dad said if I ever found Grandma, I should show her the moon.”

Silence.

Mara couldn’t breathe.

Daniel looked at the pendant in her hand.

His face changed.

“No,” he whispered.

Mara closed her fingers around the silver.

“Daniel…”

He took one step toward her.

“You told me my father died.”

Mara’s eyes filled with tears.

“He did.”

The girl frowned.

“But my dad isn’t dead.”

Daniel looked at her.

Mara looked at Daniel.

And suddenly the pieces of a life she had spent decades trying to forget began falling into place.

There had been another boy.

Another child.

Another secret.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Mom, who is this?”

Before Mara could answer, the church doors opened behind them.

An elderly priest stepped outside.

The moment he saw the girl, the color drained from his face.

He gripped the doorframe.

“Dear God.”

Mara turned.

“Father?”

The priest stared at the pendant.

Then at Daniel.

Then at the little girl.

“I thought we agreed,” he whispered, “that no one would ever tell them.”

Mara felt the world tilt beneath her.

“Tell us what?”

The priest’s eyes filled with fear.

“The truth.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What truth?”

The priest swallowed.

“Your father didn’t die.”

Mara froze.

The priest looked directly at her.

“He came back twenty-four years ago.”

Daniel’s coffee slipped from his hand and shattered on the stone.

“And he asked me to hide something from you.”

The little girl reached for Mara’s hand.

“What did Grandpa hide?”

The priest looked at the child.

“Not something.”

He paused.

“Someone.”

From somewhere inside the church came the sound of a chair scraping across the floor.

Everyone turned.

A man emerged from the shadows.

Older now.

Gray-haired.

Bent slightly with age.

But Mara knew that face.

She had spent half her life dreaming about it.

Her husband.

The man she had been told was dead.

He stopped when he saw her.

“Mara,” he said.

She couldn’t move.

Daniel stared at him in disbelief.

The little girl smiled.

“Dad!”

The old man’s face crumpled.

And Mara finally understood why the pendant had been broken in two.

It had never been a keepsake.

It had been a warning.

A promise that two halves of the same family would one day find each other.

And now they had.

But the old man looked terrified.

Because someone else had found them first.
