A small gesture of kindness unexpectedly became a mystery when a driver stopped to assist a stranger stranded along the roadside. The man had run out of money to buy gas and had no way to continue on his journey.
The driver paid for the fuel, expecting absolutely nothing in exchange. But before the stranger left, he reached into his belongings and handed the driver a small green object.
“I’ve never seen anything like this in my life,” the driver later said.
The strange item quickly attracted curiosity online. It appeared to be a small carved green gourd, a form traditionally known in Chinese culture as a hulu. For centuries, gourds have been used as decorations, charms, and symbols believed to offer protection.

That could be why the stranger chose to give it away.

The driver had stopped only because another person needed assistance. He never expected to receive anything for helping, and he certainly didn’t imagine that he would drive away carrying a mysterious object.
The internet may never discover exactly how much the carving was worth or precisely where it originated. But perhaps that isn’t really the most important part of what happened.
The driver gave a stranger enough gas to continue his journey.
