After four exhausting days away on a business trip, all I wanted was to come home and see my seven-year-old son, Bennett.<\/p>\n

Every night while I was gone, he called me asking the same question:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen are you coming home, Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n

So when my flight landed two hours early, I decided to surprise him.<\/p>\n

I skipped the message to my sister Lauren, who had been staying with Bennett while I was away, and took a cab straight home.<\/p>\n

The moment I reached the porch, the front door opened.<\/p>\n

Bennett ran into my arms.<\/p>\n

For a few seconds, everything felt perfect.<\/p>\n

Then he pulled back.<\/p>\n

His smile disappeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom\u2026\u201d he whispered. \u201cPlease don\u2019t go into my bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed, thinking he had probably made a mess.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you spill something? Draw on the walls?\u201d<\/p>\n

But he shook his head.<\/p>\n

His eyes filled with worry.<\/p>\n

\u201cI promised I wouldn\u2019t let anyone go in there.\u201d<\/p>\n

My smile faded.<\/p>\n

\u201cPromised who, Bennett?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked down.<\/p>\n

He wouldn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n

I called for Lauren.<\/p>\n

No response.<\/p>\n

The house suddenly felt strange.<\/p>\n

The kitchen lights were off.<\/p>\n

Two clean plates sat beside the sink.<\/p>\n

The backyard was empty.<\/p>\n

But Lauren\u2019s car was still parked outside.<\/p>\n

My heart started racing.<\/p>\n

\u201cBennett,\u201d I asked carefully, \u201cwhere is Aunt Lauren?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not supposed to say.\u201d<\/p>\n

That made no sense.<\/p>\n

My sister would never leave him alone.<\/p>\n

Then I noticed something.<\/p>\n

A thin line of warm yellow light was coming from beneath Bennett\u2019s bedroom door.<\/p>\n

I knew I had turned off every light before leaving.<\/p>\n

I stepped closer.<\/p>\n

And then I heard it.<\/p>\n

Whispering.<\/p>\n

Followed by the sound of something heavy being dragged across the floor.<\/p>\n

Bennett grabbed my sleeve.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, please don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey said you\u2019d be angry if you found out before it was ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mind filled with terrifying possibilities.<\/p>\n

Who was inside my son\u2019s room?<\/p>\n

Where was my sister?<\/p>\n

What was happening?<\/p>\n

I walked down the hallway.<\/p>\n

The whispering stopped.<\/p>\n

Silence filled the house.<\/p>\n

I grabbed the doorknob.<\/p>\n

Slowly turned it.<\/p>\n

And opened the door.<\/p>\n

I froze.<\/p>\n

Not from fear.<\/p>\n

From surprise.<\/p>\n

Standing in the middle of the room were my sister Lauren and my father.<\/p>\n

Surrounded by wrapping paper, ribbons, paint supplies, and wooden pieces.<\/p>\n

They were building something.<\/p>\n

Against the wall was a beautiful handmade wooden bookshelf with a cozy reading nook.<\/p>\n

The exact project I had been saving money for.<\/p>\n

The one I wanted to create for Bennett\u2019s growing book collection.<\/p>\n

Lauren dropped the armchair she was carrying.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell\u2026 there goes the surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n

My father laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou weren\u2019t supposed to be home yet!\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at them.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad? Lauren? What is happening?\u201d<\/p>\n

My father walked over and hugged me.<\/p>\n

\u201cLauren called me Thursday. She said you had been overwhelmed with work and worried about Bennett\u2019s room.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we decided to help.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe drove down, built the reading corner, and wanted it finished before you came home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lauren smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cBennett took his secret-keeper job very seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe told him not to let you into the room until everything was ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bennett looked relieved.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t tell her, Aunt Lauren! She opened the door herself!\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed.<\/p>\n

The fear disappeared completely.<\/p>\n

I looked around the room.<\/p>\n

The shelves.<\/p>\n

The lights.<\/p>\n

The chair.<\/p>\n

The effort my family had put in just to make things easier for me.<\/p>\n

My eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

I knelt down and hugged Bennett tightly.<\/p>\n

Then I looked at my sister and my father.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the best surprise I\u2019ve ever come home to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sometimes the biggest surprises aren\u2019t the ones hidden behind a door.<\/p>\n
