The older officer removed his hat.<\/p>\n

“We’d like to ask you a few questions about your husband, David Bennett.”<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n

“What happened?”<\/p>\n

The younger officer glanced at his partner before speaking.<\/p>\n

“His passport was flagged this morning after an incident at a resort in Cancun.”<\/p>\n

I folded my arms.<\/p>\n

“I haven’t spoken to him since he texted me yesterday saying he ran away with my best friend.”<\/p>\n

Both officers exchanged a look.<\/p>\n

“He actually sent you that?”<\/p>\n

I held up my phone.<\/p>\n

“Would you like to read it?”<\/p>\n

The older officer read the message silently.<\/p>\n

I ran away with your best friend. We’re never coming back.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He handed the phone back.<\/p>\n

“That… changes things.”<\/p>\n

“What things?”<\/p>\n

He took a slow breath.<\/p>\n

“Your husband has reported that you stranded him in Mexico by canceling his access to all funds.”<\/p>\n

I couldn’t help it.<\/p>\n

I laughed.<\/p>\n

Not because it was funny.<\/p>\n

Because it was unbelievable.<\/p>\n

“He stole from me.”<\/p>\n

“He abandoned our marriage.”<\/p>\n

“He admitted both in writing.”<\/p>\n

“And now he’s telling the police I stranded him?”<\/p>\n

The younger officer gave an awkward shrug.<\/p>\n

“He claims the credit cards belonged to him.”<\/p>\n

“They belong to me.”<\/p>\n

I walked to my desk and returned with a folder.<\/p>\n

“I own this house.”<\/p>\n

“I opened every account.”<\/p>\n

“Those cards were authorized-user cards.”<\/p>\n

“I can revoke them whenever I choose.”<\/p>\n

The older officer flipped through the paperwork.<\/p>\n

Everything was there.<\/p>\n

Statements.<\/p>\n

Account agreements.<\/p>\n

Property records.<\/p>\n

When he finished, he nodded.<\/p>\n

“You were within your legal rights.”<\/p>\n

“So…”<\/p>\n

“So we’re not here to arrest you.”<\/p>\n

I exhaled for what felt like the first time all morning.<\/p>\n

“Then why are you here?”<\/p>\n

“Because your husband also reported that you illegally changed the locks.”<\/p>\n

I almost smiled.<\/p>\n

“I changed the locks on my own home after he told me he was leaving forever.”<\/p>\n

The officer looked down at his notes.<\/p>\n

“…Yes.”<\/p>\n

“I don’t believe that’s a crime.”<\/p>\n

“It isn’t.”<\/p>\n

Silence filled the doorway.<\/p>\n

Finally, the older officer closed his notebook.<\/p>\n

“I think we’ve heard everything we need.”<\/p>\n

As they turned to leave, he paused.<\/p>\n

“One piece of advice.”<\/p>\n

“Yes?”<\/p>\n

“If he comes back…”<\/p>\n

He looked at the brand-new deadbolt.<\/p>\n

“…don’t let him in.”<\/p>\n

Three days later, David finally called.<\/p>\n

I let it ring.<\/p>\n

Then again.<\/p>\n

And again.<\/p>\n

By the seventh call, I answered.<\/p>\n

“What?”<\/p>\n

“Laura…”<\/p>\n

His voice sounded completely different.<\/p>\n

No confidence.<\/p>\n

No arrogance.<\/p>\n

Just panic.<\/p>\n

“My wallet was stolen.”<\/p>\n

“I don’t have any money.”<\/p>\n

“I need you to book us flights home.”<\/p>\n

“Us?<\/em>“<\/p>\n

He hesitated.<\/p>\n

“…Melissa too.”<\/p>\n

I actually laughed.<\/p>\n

“You left with my best friend.”<\/p>\n

“You emptied my accounts.”<\/p>\n

“You told me you were never coming back.”<\/p>\n

“I said good luck.”<\/p>\n

“I meant it.”<\/p>\n

“Laura, please.”<\/p>\n

“We’ve been sleeping in the airport.”<\/p>\n

“The hotel kicked us out.”<\/p>\n

“I don’t care.”<\/p>\n

“You can’t leave us here.”<\/p>\n

“I didn’t.”<\/p>\n

“You left.”<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

Then he tried a different approach.<\/p>\n

“You owe me after twenty-seven years of marriage.”<\/p>\n

“No.”<\/p>\n

“I owe myself some peace.”<\/p>\n

I hung up.<\/p>\n

The divorce moved faster than anyone expected.<\/p>\n

David was furious when he learned every unauthorized charge from Cancun had been disputed.<\/p>\n

The bank sided with me.<\/p>\n

The resort produced copies of receipts bearing his signature.<\/p>\n

The airline confirmed he had purchased two one-way tickets.<\/p>\n

Everything he had done proved exactly what he intended.<\/p>\n

Abandonment.<\/p>\n

Financial misuse.<\/p>\n

Intent.<\/p>\n

Even Melissa’s husband filed for divorce after seeing the same evidence.<\/p>\n

Apparently, she’d told him she was attending a business conference.<\/p>\n

She wasn’t.<\/p>\n

Six months later, the house felt different.<\/p>\n

Lighter.<\/p>\n

I painted the kitchen the pale blue David had always hated.<\/p>\n

I adopted an old rescue dog named Charlie.<\/p>\n

To enjoy it.<\/p>\n

One afternoon, while watering flowers on my porch, my neighbor walked over holding an envelope.<\/p>\n
