My eight-year-old son died at school one week before Mother’s Day, and everyone kept telling me there was nothing anyone could have done.<\/p>\n

I tried to believe them, because anything else felt impossible.<\/p>\n

But Randy’s bright red Spider-Man backpack disappeared the same day he did.<\/p>\n

That was the part nobody could explain.<\/p>\n

His teacher, Ms. Bell, said she did not know where it went. The principal, Ms. Reeves, said the school had checked everywhere. Even the officer looked uncomfortable when I asked about it again.<\/p>\n

“Haley,” he said gently. “I know you want answers, ma’am, but sometimes things get misplaced during emergencies.”<\/p>\n

I looked at him across my kitchen table. “My son collapsed at school, and the one thing he carried every day vanished. That is not the same as being misplaced.”<\/p>\n

He did not argue.<\/p>\n

No one did, and that was worse.<\/p>\n

On Mother’s Day morning, I sat on the living room floor with Randy’s dinosaur blanket in my lap and his cereal bowl on the coffee table.<\/p>\n

Every year, he made me breakfast.<\/p>\n

Breakfast meant dry cereal, too much milk on the side, and flowers yanked from the yard with half the roots still attached.<\/p>\n

This year, the bowl was empty.<\/p>\n

At nine o’clock, the doorbell rang.<\/p>\n

It rang again.<\/p>\n

Then came frantic knocking.<\/p>\n

I pushed myself up, wiped my face, and opened the door.<\/p>\n

A little girl stood on my porch.<\/p>\n

She had tangled brown hair, wet cheeks, and an oversized denim jacket hanging off her shoulders.<\/p>\n

In her arms was Randy’s backpack.<\/p>\n

“Are you Randy’s mom?” she asked.<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

“You were looking for this, weren’t you?”<\/p>\n

My hand grabbed the doorframe.<\/p>\n

“Where did you get that, honey?”<\/p>\n

“Randy told me to guard it. He was my friend.”<\/p>\n

\n

Inside my kitchen, she placed the backpack on the table like it was something holy.<\/p>\n

“I didn’t steal it,” she said quickly.<\/p>\n

“I know.”<\/p>\n

“I was guarding it.”<\/p>\n

My fingers shook as I unzipped it.<\/p>\n

Inside were knitting needles, lavender and white yarn, a pattern, and a lopsided unicorn.<\/p>\n

“Craft class,” Sarah said. “Most kids made bookmarks, but Randy wanted a unicorn.”<\/p>\n

“Why a unicorn?”<\/p>\n

“He said you liked them.”<\/p>\n

I pressed it to my chest.<\/p>\n

“He remembered that?” I whispered.<\/p>\n

“I think he remembered everything,” Sarah said.<\/p>\n

\n

Under the yarn was a card:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cMom, it’s not done yet.
Don’t laugh. Sarah says the horn is hardest. Ms. Bell said there wasn’t time before Mother’s Day.
I love you more than cereal breakfast.
Love, Randy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Then a note:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI’m sorry I ruined the Mother’s Day wall. I know you’re sick and tired and I made more trouble.
But I promise I’m not bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sarah began crying.<\/p>\n

\n

She told me what happened.<\/p>\n

Randy had been blamed for something another child did. He was made to write an apology note before he collapsed.<\/p>\n

“He kept saying, ‘My mom knows I don’t lie,'” Sarah said. “But Ms. Bell said sometimes good kids still disappoint their mothers.”<\/p>\n

My son had died thinking I might believe he was bad.<\/p>\n

\n

I took Sarah to the school the next day.<\/p>\n

I placed the apology letter, the unicorn, and the drawing on the table.<\/p>\n

“He didn’t ruin the wall,” I said.<\/p>\n

Ms. Bell went pale.<\/p>\n

“No,” she admitted. “He didn’t.”<\/p>\n

Sarah squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n

Ms. Reeves tried to soften it. “We can review this carefully.”<\/p>\n

“No,” I said. “You can review it publicly.”<\/p>\n

Three days later, the school held a correction ceremony.<\/p>\n

Ms. Bell stood before everyone.<\/p>\n

“Randy was wrongly blamed,” she said. “He deserved better from me.”<\/p>\n

Sarah stood up afterward and placed the finished unicorn in my hands.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s not perfect,” she said.<\/p>\n

I held it close.<\/p>\n

“Then it’s perfect,” I whispered.<\/p>\n

\n

That Sunday, Sarah and her grandfather came to dinner.<\/p>\n

I set three plates.<\/p>\n

And one small bowl of cereal, just the way Randy used to eat it.<\/p>\n

Sarah saw it but said nothing.<\/p>\n

She only placed the unicorn beside it.<\/p>\n

I lost my son that week.<\/p>\n

Nothing will ever make that right.<\/p>\n

But on Mother’s Day, a little girl brought me his backpack.<\/p>\n
