I felt something cold spread through my chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat man abandoned you,\u201d I said firmly. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t get to rewrite history because it suits him now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyes filled again.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said you\u2019d try to stop me.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was the moment I realized this wasn\u2019t just confusion.<\/p>\n

She looked down.<\/p>\n

\u201cA Thanksgiving dinner with his team.\u201d<\/p>\n

The absurdity of it almost made me laugh.<\/p>\n

Almost.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo let me get this straight,\u201d I said slowly. \u201cHe ignored your entire life, shows up out of nowhere, threatens me, and now wants you to play happy daughter for his image?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tears slipped down her face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know what to do,\u201d she said. \u201cHe said if I didn\u2019t go, he\u2019d make sure you lost everything you built. I just\u2026 I didn\u2019t want to ruin your life.\u201d<\/p>\n

That broke something in me.<\/p>\n

I walked over and gently held her face in my hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cListen to me,\u201d I said. \u201cYou are not responsible for protecting me from a grown man\u2019s manipulation. Do you understand?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t understand what\u2019s happening here,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m rebuilding my public image. She\u2019s part of that. You\u2019re just\u2026 in the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was when I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said calmly. \u201cYou\u2019re the one in the way.\u201d<\/p>\n
