“May I ask what happened?” I asked.

Rebecca was quiet for a moment.

“Richard has been with us for eight years. His division has consistently exceeded its targets. Is there a particular concern?”

I looked through the windshield at the empty road ahead.

“Rebecca, I had dinner with him tonight.”

There was another silence.

“I’m sorry. What?”

“He invited me to dinner at his house. During the evening, he offered me a job cleaning the company toilets. Apparently, he thought it was hilarious.”

Rebecca didn’t laugh.

“Margaret, are you serious?”

“Completely.”

“Did he know who you were?”

“No. And I would prefer that we keep it that way until Monday.”

“Understood.”

I continued.

“I want you to investigate his management practices. Don’t assume his financial results tell the whole story. Look at employee turnover, complaints, promotions, supplier relationships, expenses, and any unusual payments. I also want to know whether he’s been using company resources for personal purposes.”

Rebecca’s voice became more serious.

“Are you suggesting misconduct?”

“I’m suggesting we find out the truth before making any decisions.”

“Understood. I’ll begin tonight.”

I ended the call and drove home.

I didn’t sleep particularly well.

Not because Richard had insulted me. I’d encountered arrogant people throughout my career, and his behavior wasn’t especially surprising.

What bothered me was Vanessa.

My future daughter-in-law had laughed.

She had watched her father humiliate an older woman who was supposed to become part of her family, and she’d joined in.

Daniel had defended me, but I could see how embarrassed he was.

I wondered whether he’d noticed the same things about Vanessa that I had.

The following morning, he called.

“Mom, I owe you another apology.”

I was watering the plants when my phone rang.

“Daniel, you have nothing to apologize for.”

“I should have stopped Dad’s comments earlier.”

“Your future father-in-law’s behavior isn’t your responsibility.”

He sighed.

“Vanessa says you took the joke too seriously.”

I stopped watering.

“Does she?”

“She says her father was only trying to be funny.”

“And what do you think?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

“Honestly, Mom, I thought it was cruel.”

I smiled sadly.

“Then trust your own judgment, sweetheart. You don’t have to agree with someone just because you’re planning to marry their daughter.”

We talked for another few minutes before hanging up.

I spent the rest of Saturday gardening.

Meanwhile, Rebecca and her team were examining the company records.

By Sunday afternoon, she called again.

“Margaret, I’ve reviewed the initial documents.”

“And?”

“There’s something concerning.”

I sat down.

“What have you found?”

“Richard’s division has excellent reported financial results. However, the employee turnover rate is significantly higher than the company average. Several experienced employees have left within the last eighteen months.”

“That isn’t necessarily misconduct.”

“No. But there are also complaints involving intimidation, favoritism, and questionable promotion decisions.”

I closed my eyes.

“Keep going.”

“Three former employees submitted formal complaints. Two alleged that Richard routinely humiliated junior staff members during meetings. Another claimed that he threatened to damage an employee’s career after she questioned an expense report.”

I took a breath.

“Have those complaints been investigated?”

“Partially. The previous regional human resources manager closed two of them without completing interviews with the complainants.”

“Who authorized that?”

“Richard.”

I stared at the garden.

“Anything else?”

Rebecca hesitated.

“Yes. We found several payments to a consulting company that appears to have a connection to one of Richard’s relatives.”

I straightened in my chair.

“What kind of payments?”

“Consultancy fees. The contracts are vague, and the documentation supporting the work is incomplete.”

“Do we know whether the services were actually provided?”

“Not yet. Our finance team is checking.”

I was silent.

This was no longer about an unpleasant dinner.

If Richard had been mistreating employees or misusing company funds, that was something the board needed to examine.

“Rebecca, I want an independent review. No assumptions, no shortcuts, and no personal vendettas. Every finding must be supported by documentation.”

“Agreed.”

“And arrange the board meeting for Monday at nine.”

“Already arranged.”

I ended the call and sat quietly for several minutes.

I had built Collins Industrial Holdings from a small manufacturing operation into a major business.

My husband had helped me through the difficult early years, and after he passed away, I had continued working because the company represented decades of effort.

I had never expected employees to treat me like royalty.

I expected them to treat each other with basic respect.

And I certainly didn’t want a company culture where an executive could humiliate people simply because he believed he was more important than them.

Monday morning arrived.

I woke up early, dressed in a tailored navy suit, and put on the small pearl earrings my husband had given me years earlier.

I looked in the mirror.

The woman looking back at me was the same woman Richard had mocked over dinner.

The same woman he’d offered a cleaning job.

But there was one important difference.

Today, I wasn’t attending dinner as Daniel’s mother.

I was attending a board meeting as the majority owner and founder of Collins Industrial Holdings.

At 8:45, my driver dropped me outside the corporate headquarters.

The building stood twelve stories tall, with glass windows reflecting the morning sunlight.

I hadn’t visited the office in several months because I’d gradually handed more daily responsibilities to the executive team.

But everyone knew who I was.

The receptionist looked up.

“Good morning, Mrs. Collins.”

“Good morning, Sarah.”

She smiled.

“It’s wonderful to see you.”

“Thank you. Is the board meeting ready?”

“Yes. Everyone is waiting upstairs.”

I entered the elevator.

On the tenth floor, I could hear voices coming from the conference room.

Richard was already there.

He was sitting at the head of the table, speaking confidently with two other executives.

When I entered, he barely glanced up.

Then his eyes widened.

He stared at me.

For several seconds, he didn’t say anything.

Finally, he forced a smile.

“Margaret?”

I placed my handbag beside the chair.

“Good morning, Mr. Whitmore.”

He looked around the room.

“Are you lost?”

One of the directors immediately stood.

“Good morning, Mrs. Collins.”

Another followed.

“It’s a pleasure to see you.”

Richard’s smile began disappearing.

He looked from the directors to me.

Then back again.

“Mrs. Collins?” he repeated.

I pulled out my chair and sat down.

“Yes, Richard. I believe we met on Friday evening.”

His face lost its color.

Nobody laughed.

Nobody even moved.

I opened the folder Rebecca had placed in front of me.

“Shall we begin?”

Richard swallowed.

“Of course.”

The chairman of the board cleared his throat.

“Before we start, I think it’s important to acknowledge our founder and majority owner, Margaret Collins. Margaret has requested an independent review of certain management practices within the regional division.”

Richard stared at me.

I looked directly at him.

“Mr. Whitmore, you told me on Friday that you practically built this company yourself.”

He shifted in his chair.

“I was speaking casually.”

“I see.”

I turned a page.

“Then perhaps you can explain why several employees have described your management style as intimidating.”

His expression changed.

“What employees?”

Rebecca opened her folder.

“We’ll be discussing the documented complaints individually.”

Richard looked increasingly uncomfortable.

I continued.

“There’s also the matter of several consultancy payments that require further examination.”

He immediately leaned forward.

“Those are legitimate business expenses.”

“Then I’m sure the documentation will establish that.”

I closed the folder.

“Richard, this meeting isn’t about what you said to me at dinner. It’s about how you’ve managed a division of this company and whether you’ve fulfilled the responsibilities entrusted to you.”

He nodded nervously.

“Of course.”

I looked around the table.

“Let’s review the findings.”

And as Rebecca began presenting the documents, Richard finally understood that Monday morning wasn’t going to be another opportunity for him to make jokes at someone else’s expense.

It was going to be an opportunity for him to answer questions.

But the most difficult part of the morning was still ahead.

Because one of the documents Rebecca placed on the screen contained an email Richard had sent to a senior employee.

And the person he’d written it about was someone I knew very well.

Daniel.

I stared at the screen.

Then I looked at Richard.

“Would you care to explain why my son’s name appears in this correspondence?”

For the first time that morning, Richard looked genuinely terrified.

And I realized that Friday night’s dinner might have revealed only a small part of what had been happening behind the company’s doors.
