He had laughed and said I had no idea what luxury really meant. Apparently, he had decided it was time to show me. The only problem was that he was spending my money to make his point.

I turned my phone toward my father.

“He’s using the business card.”

Martin Bell barely reacted.

“Of course he is.”

“Dad, my divorce became final this morning. How is he still able to use my company card?”

“Because for twelve years, you allowed him to mistake having access for actually owning something.”

His response stung because I knew he was right.

Landon had never been employed by my company. He had never held a director’s position, owned shares, or been given official signing authority over any of its accounts.

However, because I had once trusted him with an additional card for travel and household expenses, he had gradually started behaving as though he had a right to everything in my financial world.

Throughout the years, I had introduced extra security measures, replaced account managers, and separated certain expenses. Still, I had never completely taken away his access.

It wasn’t because I didn’t know how to do it. Every time I attempted to make a change, he accused me of treating our marriage like a business transaction.

And every single time, I gave in.

I glanced at the declined transaction on my screen again.

“Do you think he actually assumed the card would continue working?”

My father settled back into his chair.

“Harper, men like Landon don’t necessarily think the rules don’t apply to them. Sometimes, they just assume somebody else will come along and deal with the consequences.”

My phone started ringing.

It was Landon.

I watched his name appear on the screen.

For twelve years, seeing that name had reminded me of home, disagreements, apologies, anniversaries, and the constant hope that things would improve the following day.

Now, it represented a man standing inside an expensive club, realizing that the privileges he had always considered his could disappear within seconds.

I picked up.

“What have you done?” he demanded.

He didn’t even bother saying hello.

Behind his voice, I could hear music, glasses clinking, and Tessa complaining to someone about how long everything was taking.

“I changed my PINs,” I replied.

“You had absolutely no right to freeze my card!”

“It’s a company card, Landon. You don’t work for my business, and you have no authorization to use it.”

He went quiet for a moment.

Then he laughed.

It was the familiar laugh he always used when he wanted me to question whether I was being unreasonable.

“Come on, don’t be ridiculous. I’ve carried that card in my wallet for years.”

“And now you no longer have permission to use it.”

“You’re making me look like an idiot in front of everyone.”

I glanced at my father.

He was watching me silently.

For the first time in years, I didn’t feel responsible for protecting Landon from the consequences of his own behavior.

“Maybe you should have considered that before attempting to charge a $640,000 necklace to my company.”

The silence that followed was immediate.

“How did you find out about that?”

“The bank sent a transaction notification to my phone.”

“Harper, just listen. You’ve got this completely wrong.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

His voice became quieter.

“Tessa wanted to look at the necklace. I was only going to have them reserve it. The card was already saved in their system. I never thought—”

“You never considered that the card might stop working after our divorce?”

“Stop making everything sound worse than it is! You know I would never steal from you.”

I nearly laughed.

Not because there was anything amusing about the situation.

But because for years, he had accused me of being overly suspicious, controlling, and far too concerned about finances.

He had made me feel guilty whenever I asked questions about where our money was going.

And now, after our marriage had ended, he expected me to accept that attempting to purchase something worth $640,000 was simply an innocent misunderstanding.

“Landon,” I said in a calm voice, “you have until tomorrow morning to return every company card, key, document, and device that belongs to my business. My attorney will get in touch with you regarding anything else.”

“You can’t do that.”

“I’ve already done it.”

I disconnected the call.

My hands were shaking.

My father moved the coffee cup closer to me.

“Drink some.”

“I feel like I’m going to be sick.”

“I understand.”

“He sounded furious.”

“Of course he did. He expected you to keep being afraid of his anger.”

I looked down at the divorce papers resting beside my phone.

For years, I had imagined that the most painful part of ending my marriage would be losing the man I loved.

I hadn’t realized that the hardest part might actually be discovering how much of myself I had sacrificed simply to make that man comfortable.

But I had no idea that the necklace was only the beginning.

At 9:14 p.m., another notification appeared on my screen.

This time, it wasn’t from the bank.

It came from my company’s accounting system.

UNUSUAL PAYMENT REQUEST — REQUIRES APPROVAL.

The amount was $1.2 million.

The recipient was a business I had never heard of.

And the authorization request displayed my electronic signature.

I immediately straightened in my chair.

“Dad.”

He was already walking toward me.

“What happened?”

I turned the laptop around so he could see the screen.

His expression changed as he read the information.

It wasn’t surprise.

It was recognition.

He took out his phone and called someone.

“Daniel? Martin Bell here. I need you to investigate a company named Northbridge Advisory. Right away. Begin with its directors, registered address, and every transaction associated with it.”

He listened for a moment before continuing.

“No, don’t approach anyone connected to that company yet. Just establish who owns it.”

After ending the call, he turned toward me.

“Harper, there’s something I need you to answer honestly.”

“What is it?”

“Has Landon ever had access to your electronic signature?”

I shook my head.

“Not directly. He knew the password to my old laptop, but I changed that last year.”

“Did he ever use your laptop without asking you?”

I couldn’t respond immediately.

Something suddenly came back to me.

Six months earlier, I had returned from a business trip and discovered Landon sitting inside my home office.

My laptop was open, and several financial folders had been moved.

When I questioned him, he explained that he was searching for a photograph from our anniversary.

I had believed his explanation.

In fact, I had even apologized for doubting him.

My father noticed the realization spreading across my face.

“Harper?”

“He was in my office.”

“When?”

“About six months ago. He told me he was looking for a photograph.”

Dad closed his eyes briefly.

Then he opened them again.

“Tomorrow morning, we’re going to your office. Tonight, you’re not approving anything. You’re not deleting anything. And you’re not contacting Landon again.”

“Do you think he copied my signature?”

“I think there is enough here to justify an investigation, but not enough to accuse anyone just yet.”

He pulled a chair closer and sat beside me.

“Listen carefully. We’ll preserve all the records, notify the bank’s fraud department, and let your attorney arrange any necessary restrictions. We aren’t going to threaten anyone, and we aren’t giving anybody an opportunity to destroy evidence.”

I nodded, although my thoughts were moving faster than I could control.

Landon had always insisted that he understood business because he understood people.

He knew how to compliment a manager, charm a waiter, and convince an entire room that he belonged there.

But he had never understood the quiet systems that kept a company running.

And if he had attempted to transfer $1.2 million through my business without permission, those systems were about to reveal something he couldn’t simply talk his way out of.

At 10:03 p.m., my phone rang once more.

This time, the caller was Tessa.

For a moment, I considered ignoring it.

Then I answered.

“Harper,” she said, her voice shaking with anger, “you need to take care of this immediately.”

I leaned back in my chair.

“Take care of what?”

“Landon’s card. The club won’t complete our purchase, and the manager is telling us that the account holder has withdrawn the authorization.”

“That’s correct.”

“You can’t embarrass him like this!”

I looked toward my father.

He lifted one eyebrow.

“I’m sorry,” I replied. “Who am I speaking to?”

She took a sharp breath.

“Don’t pretend you don’t know. It’s Tessa.”

“Right. Landon’s girlfriend.”

“His future wife.”

Her words sounded strange.

Not because they hurt me the way they might have once.

But because they came across as a threat from someone who had no idea what she was actually threatening.

“Well,” I said, “congratulations.”

“Don’t you dare make fun of me.”

“I’m not.”

“Landon told me everything would be settled after the divorce. He said the card was part of his compensation for supporting your business all these years.”

I turned toward my father.

His expression became completely motionless.

“His compensation?” I repeated.

“That’s right. He said you owed him. He said your company wouldn’t have achieved any of this without his help.”

For a moment, I couldn’t find the words.

Landon had attended a handful of company dinners.

He had accompanied me to conferences.

He had introduced himself to people I had spent years developing professional relationships with.

But he had never actually worked for my company.

He had never supervised an employee, signed a legitimate business contract, or accepted responsibility for a financial decision.

Yet somehow, over time, he had started telling people that my achievements belonged to him.

“Tessa,” I said carefully, “I have no idea what Landon has told you. But if he believes he’s entitled to compensation, ask him to provide written proof. My company maintains records of its employees, contracts, and authorized expenses.”

She fell silent.

Then she responded.

“He warned me you would do this.”

“Do what?”

“Try to destroy him because he left you.”

I stared at the wall.

There it was.

The explanation he had already prepared.

I was the bitter ex-wife.

The controlling businesswoman.

The woman who couldn’t accept that her husband had chosen somebody younger.

It was an easy story to tell because it turned every question about his behavior into an act of revenge.

“I’m not attempting to destroy Landon,” I said. “I’m protecting what belongs to my company.”

“It’s the same thing.”

“No, it isn’t.”

I ended the call.

My father waited until I had placed the phone down.

“She believes everything he tells her,” I whispered.

“Maybe she does.”

“What if everybody believes him?”

He reached across the table and held my hand.

“Then we’ll have to let the records speak louder than the rumors.”

For the first time that night, I experienced something other than fear or anger.

I felt a quiet but determined sense of purpose.

Landon had spent years insisting that I was too emotional to understand business.

He had confused my patience with a lack of intelligence.

He had mistaken my kindness for weakness.

And tomorrow, we were going to discover whether he had made an even more costly mistake.

The following morning, I reached my office before sunrise.

The building was located in Midtown Manhattan, inside a glass-and-steel tower whose lobby carried the faint smell of polished stone and freshly brewed coffee.

I had purchased my first small office in the city eleven years earlier, back when my company consisted of only six employees, two rented rooms, and a pile of contracts stored inside a filing cabinet beside my desk.

Today, Bellhaven Holdings managed commercial properties, private investments, and several operating businesses.

Building it had required years of late nights, thoughtful decisions, and sacrifices I rarely spoke about.

Landon had been present for the celebrations.

He hadn’t been there during the sleepless nights when a major tenant threatened to walk away, or when an entire project nearly fell apart after a contractor disappeared with the deposit.

He had shown up for the photographs.

Not for the actual work.
