Julian’s expression changed from self-assured arrogance to complete bewilderment as he looked at what was unfolding in front of him. The three vehicles that had stopped behind me were impossible to miss. Two were police cruisers with their emergency lights flashing, while the third was a polished black sedan owned by my attorney, Harrison Vance.

The police officers got out first, with Harrison following close behind. He straightened his tie as he made his way toward the house. Julian stepped backward, almost dropping his drink in the process. Khloe soon appeared in the doorway, looking both shocked and confused.

I walked across the street to meet Harrison, who greeted me with a reassuring nod. The officers came along behind us, making their presence felt as we approached the property.

“Good evening,” Harrison announced, speaking in a composed but firm manner. “We’re here to address an issue concerning the occupancy of this property.”

Julian attempted to pull himself together.

“This is all a misunderstanding,” he said nervously. “We’ve been living here for two years with Martha’s permission.”

Harrison didn’t appear bothered by his explanation.

“Having permission to stay somewhere doesn’t automatically make you a legal tenant,” he responded. “My client never entered into a lease agreement with you, and you haven’t paid toward any of the household expenses. As a result, you don’t have the legal protections you’re claiming under tenant laws.”

Khloe started to speak, clearly wanting to object, but Harrison lifted his hand to interrupt her.

“There’s also the fact that this property is legally registered to Ms. Natalie, and she has never given either of you permission to establish residency here.”

One of the officers stepped forward and addressed Julian and Khloe directly.

“Our responsibility is to make sure this matter is handled peacefully. You have until nine o’clock to leave the property. If there are any personal belongings you need to collect, you may retrieve them under Ms. Natalie’s supervision.”

Julian’s posture dropped as the reality of what was happening finally sank in. Khloe turned toward me with a pleading look in her eyes, but I refused to change my position.

“This isn’t about getting even,” I told her quietly. “It’s about doing what’s right for our mother.”

Khloe slowly nodded, finally beginning to understand. Accepting what was happening, she and Julian went back inside to collect their belongings. The officers remained on the porch, making sure everything was handled without any trouble.

While they gathered their things, I stepped away for a moment and took a deep breath. My mother’s house would soon belong to her again, just as it should. Thinking about that gave me a sense of peace and strengthened my resolve to make sure nobody hurt her again.

By nine that evening, Julian and Khloe came outside carrying their suitcases. The officers accompanied them to their vehicle, checking that everything went smoothly. Before getting inside, Julian stopped and glanced back at me.

“I honestly thought we could find a way to work things out,” he said.

I slowly shook my head.

“You had your opportunity to do the right thing.”

After that, they got into the car and drove away, leaving the house quiet and motionless. Harrison and the officers left shortly afterward, and I was finally alone with my thoughts.
