I found the refinance packet in a drawer in the study. I printed the mortgage statements available through our account and collected the tax records I could legally access.

I didn’t try to get into his email. I didn’t take his private papers that had nothing to do with me.

I gathered records connected to my property, my own signature, and our shared finances.

At the bottom of the refinance packet, I discovered a document I hadn’t paid much attention to back in March.

It was an acknowledgment of financial disclosures.

My signature was on the final page.

Above it was a paragraph stating that I had received and reviewed certain information concerning the transaction.

I stared at the page.

I remembered signing the papers at the kitchen table. I remembered the notary arriving with a briefcase. I remembered my husband placing small yellow tabs beside every signature line.

But I couldn’t remember ever receiving the financial information mentioned in the acknowledgment.

I called Margaret’s office.

Her assistant instructed me to bring the entire packet in the following morning.

I barely slept that night.

My husband arrived home around seven, carrying a paper bag from the restaurant where he occasionally picked up dinner.

He placed it on the counter.

“I brought you something.”

Inside was a slice of pecan pie.

My favorite.

I stared at it for a few seconds.

He used to bring me little treats when he traveled for work. A candy bar from a gas station. A pastry from a bakery. Once, years earlier, he had brought me a tiny bottle of perfume because he said it reminded him of the flowers outside our first apartment.

I had kept that bottle long after its fragrance disappeared.

Now the pie felt like a prop in a performance I had never agreed to be part of.

“Thank you,” I said.

He studied my face.

“Are you still upset?”

“I’m thinking.”

“About what?”

“Everything.”

He pulled out a chair.

“Look, I know I haven’t dealt with this the right way.”

I waited.

“I made some decisions I shouldn’t have made.
