That’s simply how it operates out here. Ask anybody.”

He didn’t raise his voice at all.

Gordon Rasmussen never raises his voice. He delivered the words the exact way a man reads off the price of diesel from the sign at the Cenex station—flat, certain, and slightly bored.

It happened to be a Tuesday night in April. The kids were already tucked into bed, and my husband, Jake, was finishing up a shower following a long shift at the implement shop. I had just brewed a fresh pot of coffee because Gordon had dropped by earlier “to talk about the lease.”

The problem was, there never was any lease.

There had never been a lease to begin with.

There was only a check for five hundred dollars that Jake wrote on the first of every single month and walked across the yard to hand to his father.

“I don’t understand,” I said, looking at him. “We built this house. We paid for every single stick of lumber in it. You know that for a fact. You watched us do it.”

“I know you did,” Gordon replied. “And I’m glad you did. But you built it on my ground. You put a house on another man’s land, it goes right along with the land. That’s the law.”

I glanced over toward the refrigerator.

My son Cole’s spelling test was stuck firmly up there, adorned with a shining gold star. My daughter Hailey’s fourth-grade drawing of a horse was also still posted there, slowly curling at the corners.

“Why are you telling me this right now?” I asked.

He offered a simple shrug.

“Because I’m getting older. Because I went to see Bill Hanson regarding my will. And because I think the two of you ought to know exactly where things stand.”

With that, he picked his mug back up and finished off his coffee, acting as casually as if we had just been discussing the local weather.

My name is Kayla Rasmussen. I am thirty-nine years old, and I work as a paraprofessional at the elementary school in Hemingford, Nebraska.

Up until that exact Tuesday night, I genuinely believed I lived in my own home.

Eleven years prior, the entire idea had originated with Gordon.

Jake and I had been renting a drafty little place in Alliance from a landlord who never fixed anything. Hailey was still just a baby, I was working as a para at the elementary school, and Jake was busy turning wrenches at the implement dealer.

Gordon dropped by one Sunday afternoon, sitting down on our sagging couch and staring up at the brown water stain on the ceiling for a long minute.

“I’ve got that corner by the road,” he mentioned. “The one just past the shelterbelt where the old granary used to be. Two acres, more or less. Build your place there and save yourselves the trouble of buying a lot.”

Jake’s mother, Ruthann, was sitting right beside him on the couch at the time. She gave his arm a gentle squeeze and smiled warmly at me.

I remember thinking back then that it was easily the kindest thing anyone in Jake’s family had ever said to us.

At the time, we didn’t possess much of anything.

Whatever we did manage to acquire, we poured straight into that house.

It was a plain, one-story structure measuring twelve hundred square feet, featuring three bedrooms and one bath. Jake had carefully sketched it out on graph paper while sitting at the kitchen table in our old rental.

We constructed it over a concrete block crawl space because a full basement was simply more than we could afford.

My dad, Lowell Olson, came over every single Saturday for two straight summers, hauling his own tools in the back of his Ford pickup. Together, he and Jake framed every last wall, while I hung drywall using a borrowed lift until my shoulders burned so intensely I could barely raise my arms to wash my hair.

We paid for the whole project using every penny we had saved up, supplemented by a modest loan from the credit union secured against Jake’s tools and his truck, alongside every hour of overtime Jake could possibly manage to pick up.

No bank would ever agree to write a mortgage for a house sitting squarely on someone else’s land—a realization we discovered early on.

We finally moved in during the October when Hailey turned two.

She toddled across the bare plywood floors in her little socks, laughing as her footsteps echoed through the rooms.

Ruthann wept right there in the doorway, bringing along a freshly baked cherry pie as a housewarming gift.

Then, on the first of the following month, Gordon arrived right around suppertime.

“I’ll need five hundred a month for the ground,” he declared. “My dad charged me for mine when I first started out. It’s the only way a man learns what things actually cost.”

Jake looked straight at me.

I looked straight back at Jake.

We had just spent every single dollar we owned in this world.

Even so, he was his father, and it was his father’s land, and Jake had been raised never to argue back.

“Okay, Dad,” Jake said quietly.

He sat down at the kitchen table that very night and wrote out the first check.

I kept the carbon copy tucked safely inside a shoebox sitting on the top shelf of the closet.

I’m not entirely sure why I saved it. I suppose a small part of me already knew that one day, I would want to count them all up.

Gordon set his coffee mug down onto my kitchen table, folding his hands precisely how he always does before saying grace.
