I felt afraid. Walter had been a quiet man, someone who preferred fixing a broken fence to arguing with a neighbor. He disliked conflict and had spent most of our marriage avoiding unnecessary disagreements. Why would a dying man deliberately create a situation that would make his own wife feel abandoned? I slipped my finger beneath the envelope flap and carefully opened it. Inside were four handwritten pages and a small brass key. The letter began with a sentence that made my heart ache.“My dearest Eleanor, if you are reading this, then I have failed to explain something to you while I was still alive. For that, I am deeply sorry.” I pressed the paper against my chest. “Oh, Walter,” I whispered. Then I continued reading.“You will probably hate me for what I have done today. You may believe I have forgotten everything you sacrificed for me, everything we built together, and every promise I made you when we were young.” Tears blurred the words.“Please believe me when I say that I have forgotten none of it. I remember the little apartment where we began our marriage. I remember you selling your wedding bracelet to help me pay my college fees. I remember you sitting beside me through my surgery, holding my hand when I was too frightened to admit that I might die.” I stopped reading. I remembered that surgery. Walter had been forty-seven, and the doctors had warned us that complications were possible. I had slept in a hospital chair for six nights because I refused to go home without him. When he finally woke fully from the anesthesia, he looked at me and said, “If I ever get the chance, I’m going to spend the rest of my life making this up to you.” He had kept that promise in a thousand ordinary ways. Or so I had believed. I wiped my eyes and returned to the letter.“Eleanor, the will you heard today is not the whole story. I could not explain everything to the family without putting you in a position where someone might try to influence your decisions before you knew the truth.” My fingers tightened around the pages.“There is something about our family that I discovered last year. Something I should have investigated decades ago. I was too trusting, and I allowed my love for my relatives to blind me to what was happening around us.” I heard Bennett shift in his chair. I looked up at him. “Did Walter tell you what he discovered?” The attorney shook his head. “He shared certain documents with me, but he asked me to let you make the first decision about what to do with them.” I returned to the letter.“The little brass key enclosed with this letter opens the bottom drawer of the old writing desk in our bedroom. Behind the false panel, you will find a blue folder. Read everything inside before you speak to Denise, Roman, or anyone else in the family.” My heart began beating faster.“Do not leave our home because someone tells you that you are too old to manage it. Do not sign anything simply because a person you love insists it is for your own good. And above all, do not mistake the person who offers you the most comfort for the person who has your best interests at heart.” I read that paragraph twice. Then a third time. Denise’s face appeared in my mind. Her gentle smile. Her hand on my shoulder. Her repeated offers to take me home with her. I wanted to dismiss my suspicions. She was Walter’s sister. She had been part of our lives for nearly seventy years. She had attended our wedding, held our babies, celebrated our anniversaries, and sat beside me at countless family dinners. Surely Walter wasn’t suggesting that she had betrayed us. I continued reading.“The key to understanding everything is in that blue folder. Once you have read it, you will understand why I made the decision I made. You will also understand why I need you to be careful.” At the bottom of the final page, Walter had written one last sentence.“I love you more than I ever managed to say, Eleanor. Whatever you discover, please remember that none of this was your fault.” I lowered the letter into my lap. For several seconds, I couldn’t speak. Then I noticed something I hadn’t seen before. At the bottom of the second page, Walter had written a date. It was eleven months earlier. The same month Denise had begun visiting us more frequently. The same month Roman had started offering to organize my financial paperwork. The same month Walter had suddenly insisted on reviewing every document in our filing cabinet. I turned toward Bennett. “Did my husband believe someone was stealing from us?” The attorney folded his hands. “I believe Walter wanted you to examine the evidence before drawing any conclusions.” “That isn’t an answer.” “No,” he admitted. “It isn’t.” I stood, clutching the letter and the brass key. “I need to go home.” Bennett rose immediately. “Would you like me to arrange a car?” “No, thank you. I’ve been getting myself home for ninety years.” For the first time that afternoon, he almost smiled. Then his expression became serious again. “Eleanor, one more thing.” I turned toward him. “Walter left instructions that if you decided to investigate the documents, I should provide you with the name of an independent attorney. Someone who has never represented him or anyone in your family.” “Why?” “Because he believed you might need someone whose only responsibility was to protect your interests.” I stared at him. My husband had apparently prepared for a battle I didn’t even know existed. “Please give me the name,” I said. Bennett wrote it on a card and placed it in my purse. Then he walked me to the door. As I stepped into the hallway, I could hear my family talking near the elevators. Denise was speaking softly. “She shouldn’t be left alone tonight. We need to make sure she’s safe.” Roman answered, “I’ll handle it.” I stopped walking. There was something about those three words that unsettled me. I’ll handle it. They sounded less like concern and more like a decision that had already been made. I slipped the brass key into my pocket and continued toward the elevator without announcing myself. For the first time in sixty-nine years, I decided to keep a secret from my family. And I had a feeling Walter would have understood.

“He anticipated all of that?” “Yes.” For the first time since entering that office, I felt something other than grief.
