I found him the next morning when he failed to show up at the lots.

So the truck remained exactly as he left it: nosed out, wheels perfectly straight.

It had once been white, but thirty Nebraska winters had bleached it to a chalky pale. The doors still carried the faint shadow of an old seed dealer’s decal that had peeled away years ago. Under the hood sat the 466 diesel engine, paired with a five-speed transmission, a two-speed rear axle, and a mixer box mounted on the back. A deep dent marred the discharge chute from a morning back in 2003 when Dad clipped the corner of a feed bunk and dropped a word so harsh my mother made him apologize to the dog.

I climbed up and slid behind the steering wheel.

His chore gloves rested right there on the dashboard.

Yellow leather turned dark brown, laid neatly one atop the other, perfectly curled. The cab carried the rich, familiar scent of ground corn, diesel fuel, and peppermint. He kept peppermints in his shirt pocket to mask the fact that he still chewed tobacco long after the doctor ordered him to quit.

Because the truck block heater was plugged in, it fired up on the very first turn.

I unplugged it, winding the heavy cord onto its mounting hook with the exact motion he always used.

Then I drove it eleven miles home at a modest forty-five miles per hour, with the heater roaring and my father’s old gloves riding right on the dash in front of me.

I didn’t move them.

I haven’t moved them yet.

Theresa and I live on seven acres out on the Elba road—a house, a barn, and two small lots we bought the year we tied the knot.

I parked the feed truck right beside the barn.

She walked out wearing her heavy coat and stood gazing at it.

“Well,” she remarked quietly. “At least it’s fully paid for.”

“It’s probably the only thing out there that is.”

I meant it as a lighthearted joke.

Little did I know I had just repeated my father’s exact phrasing.

The harder reality struck the following morning.

I owned forty cows of my own, a herd I had built up from six bred heifers Dad sold me at cost when I turned twenty-nine. His new boots were caked with dried mud clear up to the ankles.

He trudged across the farmyard and halted beside the running board of the feed truck, lifting his gaze up toward the cab and the windshield.
