I glanced toward the hallway. Her bedroom door remained closed. For a brief moment, I simply stared at my computer screen. Then my phone rang. It was my neighbor, Mr. Harris. “Did you catch that?” he inquired. “I did.” “I have additional footage.” My pulse began racing. “How much more?” “Roughly thirty minutes prior to that.” I sat up straight. “Can you forward everything?” “I already sent it. Check your email.” I launched my inbox. Three video attachments. My fingers shook as I downloaded them. The first displayed my driveway at 11:34. The Civic stood parked precisely where it belonged. The second captured the street at 11:58. Nothing. The third revealed the driveway at 12:03. That was the exact moment I spotted it. The Civic’s headlights flickered on. I froze. Someone had stepped into my driveway. Someone had unlatched the driver’s door. Someone had climbed inside my daughter’s automobile. And they hadn’t approached from the street. They had emerged from behind my house. From the direction of the narrow pathway leading toward my parents’ neighborhood. I replayed it. Again. And once more. Then I noticed something else. The individual paused next to the driver’s side for several seconds before climbing in. They looked straight toward the camera. Not by accident. Deliberately. As though they knew precisely where it was positioned. My stomach sank. Whoever had taken the car was well aware of the security camera. And they had still driven right past it. That implied one of two possibilities. They were careless. Or they wanted to be observed. My phone vibrated. A text from my lawyer. Do not speak with police without me. Preserve every single recording. Do not contact witnesses yourself. I stared at the text. Then a second message came through. This one originated from my mother. We need to talk. Come over to the house. Alone. I read it twice. Then a third time. My mother knew about the crash. She knew law enforcement had questioned me. And she knew Lily faced accusations. Yet she didn’t ask, Is Lily alright? She didn’t ask, What happened? She stated: Come to the house. Alone. That marked the second something shifted deep inside me. I called her number. She answered right on the first ring. “Mom.” Silence. Then she spoke, “You shouldn’t have involved the police.” I felt every muscle in my frame tense up. “What?” “You heard me.” “The police came to my home.” “They never would have shown up if Lily hadn’t taken the vehicle.” “She didn’t.” Another pause of silence. Then my mother let out a sigh. “You need to stop shielding her.” My mouth turned instantly dry. “Shielding her from what?” “She knows what she did.” I looked toward the hallway. Lily remained inside her room. She couldn’t overhear me. “Mom,” I uttered carefully, “what precisely are you accusing my daughter of doing?” “Come over here.” “No.” “What?” “You heard me. I am not bringing Lily anywhere. And I am not coming to your house until I grasp what is occurring.” Her tone grew softer. “Your daughter was spotted at my house.” “By whom?” “You know who.” “No, Mom. I do not.” Another brief pause. Then she uttered words that made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. “Your father.” I stopped breathing for a moment. “Dad identified her?” “He laid eyes on her.” “Where?” “At the house.” “When?” She offered no reply. “Mom?” “She was present.” “My daughter was fast asleep in her bedroom.” “You cannot know that for certain.” “Yes, I can. I checked on her.” That was the exact instant my mother went completely silent. I realized something crucial. She hadn’t anticipated me saying that. I had checked on Lily at 11:41. I’d walked right past her bedroom. The door had been ajar. She had been sleeping soundly. Her phone rested charging on the desk. Her shoes sat beside the bed. Her window remained locked. And the Civic was still parked in my driveway. I had witnessed all of it. Therefore, whoever operated that automobile at 12:03 could not possibly have been Lily. “Mom,” I said, “who was actually driving?” “I told you already.” “No.” My voice sounded steadier now. “Who was driving?” She disconnected the call. I stared blankly at the phone. Then I gazed back at the security footage. I zoomed in on the driver’s wrist. A white bracelet. A dark sleeve. Something else caught my attention. A ring. Silver in color. A large oval gemstone. I recognized that ring instantly. My mother wore it every single day. I grabbed my coat. Lily emerged at the far end of the hallway. “Where are you heading?” “To speak with Grandma.” “Can I tag along?” “No.” Her expression shifted instantly. “Why?” “Because I need you to remain right here.” “Mom—” “Lily.” She came to a halt. I stepped toward her and gripped her shoulders. “I believe you. But something very bizarre is happening, and I prefer you stay far away from it.” “What bizarre thing?” I hesitated. Then I recalled my attorney’s warning. Do not contact witnesses. Do not interfere. Preserve evidence. So I took a different approach. I called him instead. Ten minutes later, he pulled up at my house. His name was Daniel Price. He was older, composed, and the type of man who seemed impossible to rattle. I played the footage for him. He observed in silence. Then he rewatched it. “Do you recognize the bracelet?” he inquired. “Yes.” “Whose is it?” “My daughter’s.” “Are you positive?” I shook my head. “No. Not anymore.” He fixed his gaze on me. “Good answer.” “What does that signify?” “It implies whoever pulled this off might have intentionally manufactured evidence pointing toward Lily.” He hit pause on the video. “Observe the jacket.” I leaned closer to the screen. “What about it?” “There is a tear right here.” He pointed toward the shoulder area. A tiny white thread protruded outward. Daniel magnified the image. “Does Lily own this specific jacket?” “No.” “Do your parents?” “I am unsure.” “Your father?” “I have never witnessed him wearing it.” “Your mother?” I stared intently at the monitor. “I have seen that jacket before.” “Where?” I couldn’t quite place it at first. Then it suddenly clicked. My mother’s garage. Hanging right next to the back entrance. A dark navy coat. Yet my mother was a petite woman. The figure within the video appeared taller. Significantly taller. “Could it be your father?” Daniel asked. “Negative.” “Why not?” “Because my father walks using a cane.” Daniel examined the footage once more. The person walked normally. No limp whatsoever. No cane in sight. “Then we must figure out who else possessed access to your parents’ home.” A cold shiver ran down my spine. “My brother.” Daniel turned his gaze to me. “You have a brother?” “Yes.” “His name?” “Evan.” “And where was Evan last night?” I had no idea. I hadn’t spoken to my brother in nearly three weeks. Our last encounter took place at my parents’ house. He had been arguing with my father. Over financial matters. A memory suddenly surfaced. A sentence my father had uttered that evening. If you think I am handing you another single dollar, you are mistaken. Evan had slammed his palm against the table. Then he glared at me. “You always receive everything.” I had chuckled because I assumed he was simply angry. Now, I wasn’t laughing at all. Daniel noticed my altered expression. “What is it?” “My brother.” “What about him?” “He possesses a key to my parents’ house.” “Does he hold a key to yours?” I shook my head negatively. “No.” “Could he have swiped the car without breaking into your residence?” I pondered the thought. Then my stomach twisted into knots. “The spare key.” Daniel glanced at me. “What spare key?” “I keep one stored in the kitchen drawer.” “Was it sitting there this morning?” “I cannot say for sure.” I dashed into the kitchen. Pulled open the drawer. Moved the batteries aside. The roll of tape. The outdated takeout menus. Nothing there. The spare Civic key had vanished. I stood completely motionless. Daniel stepped up behind me. “Do not touch anything.” I obeyed. I simply gazed at the empty space. Someone had broken into my house. Someone had taken the spare key. Someone had driven off in my daughter’s car. And someone had ensured witnesses would point fingers at Lily. Daniel dialed the police investigator assigned to the case. Then he contacted a forensic specialist. Within the hour, officers returned to my property. This time, they weren’t treating me like the mother of a suspected teenage driver. They were treating my residence as a potential crime scene. One officer photographed the kitchen drawer. Another inspected the front entry. There were zero signs of forced entry. Which meant whoever grabbed the key either had authorized access or knew its exact hiding spot. Then an officer posed the question I had been dreading. “Who knew about the hidden spare key?” I listed the names. Myself. Lily. My parents. Evan. The officer jotted everything down in his notebook. Then he looked up at me. “Anyone else?” I paused. “My parents employ a housekeeper.” “Her name?” “Marissa.” “When was she last there?” “Yesterday morning.” “Does she have access to your home?” “No.” The officer nodded slowly. Then his radio crackled to life. He stepped away to take the call. A minute later, he returned. “We located another security camera.” My heart leaped. “Where?” “A gas station situated on Oakridge.” He displayed a still photograph. The silver Civic sat parked beside a fuel pump. The driver’s door remained open. And standing right next to the vehicle was a man. Tall stature. Dark jacket. Face partially concealed. Yet his left hand was clearly visible. No bracelet present. No ring. Instead, a distinct scar stretched across the back of his hand. I recognized that scar immediately. I had seen it countless times before. My brother Evan had sustained it at age sixteen. A broken bottle involved. A brawl outside a local bar. I stared intently at the photograph. “That is my brother.” The officer’s expression shifted dramatically. “You are certain?” “Yes.” Daniel stepped right beside me. “Do not contact him.” “I had no plans to do so.” Right then, my phone rang. The screen displayed a number I hadn’t seen in years. Evan. Silence filled the room. The phone kept ringing. Once. Twice. Three times. Daniel raised a single hand. “Do not answer it.” I watched the glowing screen. Then the ringing stopped abruptly. A second later, a text popped up. You need to cease your digging. The blood in my veins ran cold. Another message followed swiftly. Lily will suffer harm if you keep pushing forward. I looked over at Daniel. He snatched the phone straight from my hand. “Now,” he stated quietly, “we are dealing with an explicit threat.” And instantly, the automobile accident no longer felt like the most terrifying element. Because whoever framed my daughter knew precisely what mattered most to me. And they had just promised to use it against her.

PART 4 The third text message landed before anyone could utter another word. You should have left the past undisturbed. Daniel stared hard at the screen. Then he glanced back at me. “What past?” “I have no clue.” Yet even as I spoke the words, I knew that wasn’t entirely truthful. There existed something my family had never discussed. Something buried so deep that I had almost convinced myself it never happened at all. Daniel handed my phone back to me. “Has Evan ever threatened you previously?” “Never.” “Has he ever threatened Lily?” “No.” “Has there been an ongoing dispute between him and your parents?” “Yes.” “Concerning money?” I nodded in confirmation. “How much?” “I couldn’t say.” Daniel’s expression grew stern. “That detail matters.” “I told you, I am unaware. My father never discusses his finances with me.” “But does he discuss them with Evan?” I cast my gaze toward the window. “No.” Daniel waited patiently. I finally let out a heavy sigh. “My brother has always maintained that Dad owes him something.” “Like what?” “Everything.” He raised an eyebrow. “That fails to specify an amount.” “My parents assisted me in purchasing my house years ago. They contributed toward Lily’s schooling. They supported me following my divorce. Evan believes they favored me over him.” “Did they?” “I honestly don’t know.” Daniel offered no response. I knew precisely what crossed his mind. Neither did I. The police officer standing beside him re-examined the threatening text. “We must confiscate this phone as evidence.” I handed it over willingly. He slid it inside a clear evidence bag. Then he posed a question that made my stomach clench. “Where is your daughter right now?” “Upstairs.” “May we speak with her?” “With me present.” “Naturally.” We discovered Lily sitting on the edge of her bed, clutching a pillow tightly. She appeared terrified. “Mom?” I sat down right beside her. “Sweetheart, you are going to be fine.” She looked up at the officer. “Am I heading to jail?” “No,” he assured her. “We are simply trying to determine who actually operated your car.” Lily swallowed hard. “I informed you I did not do it.” “We believe you.” Her eyes shifted toward me. “Mom, may I tell you something?” “Of course.” She hesitated for a second. Then she reached beneath her bed frame and pulled out a small backpack. She set it atop the mattress. I peered inside. A pair of black gloves. A baseball cap. And a folded sheet of paper. My heartbeat quickened. “Where did you discover this?” “Hidden behind my dresser.” “Does it belong to you?” She shook her head vigorously. “No.” I looked up at Daniel. He carefully unfolded the paper. Only six words were scribbled across it. You were never supposed to discover this. Daniel’s face turned grim. “Did you touch anything else?” “Nothing.” “Are you positive?” “Yes.” “When did you locate this?” “This morning.” “Why failed you to inform me?” “I felt terrified.” “Of what?” Lily gazed directly at me. “I suspected someone had been inside my room.” The bedroom suddenly felt noticeably colder. “What leads you to think that?” She pointed toward her desk area. “My window was standing open.” I looked over. The window was closed tight now. “Did you open it yourself?” “No.” “Was it latched shut last night?” “Yes.” Daniel walked over toward it. He inspected the latch mechanism. Then checked the wooden sill. A few moments later, he discovered something. A tiny black scuff mark. Resembling rubber scraped against the painted wood surface. He snapped a photograph of it. Then he looked outside. “There is a footprint down there.” We all crowded toward the window. The soil underneath remained damp from the previous night’s rainfall. A single shoe impression stood out clearly. Size twelve, perhaps. Deep tread pattern. Daniel crouched down beside it without disturbing the dirt. “Whoever entered through here wore heavy boots.” I turned to Lily. “Did you hear any noises last night?” She shook her head. “Not until…” “Until what?” She cast her eyes downward. “I woke up around midnight.” My breath hitched. “What exact time?” “I cannot be sure. Maybe twelve.” “What transpired?” “I heard the garage door move.” Daniel immediately fixed his gaze on me. “You heard the garage?” Lily nodded. “I assumed you were retrieving something from the vehicle.” “I was not.” “I realize that now.” “What actions did you take?” “I opened my bedroom door.” “And?” “I spotted someone downstairs.” My blood ran ice cold. “Who was it?” “I couldn’t tell.” “Male or female?” “A man.” “Did you catch his face?” “No.” “Anything else noticed?” Lily squeezed the pillow tighter. “He was holding an object.” “What object?” “A key.” Daniel stepped closer. “What variety of key?” Lily closed her eyes tightly, struggling to recall. “It featured a small red tag attached.” I looked straight at Daniel. The spare key I kept stored in the kitchen featured a red plastic tag. My heart plummeted. “He stood right in the kitchen,” Lily continued. “Then he glanced toward the staircase.” “Did he spot you?” “I doubt it.” “How did you react?” “I retreated back into my room and locked the door.” “And subsequent to that?” “I heard the garage open up.” A chilling silence descended upon the room. “So you heard the individual drive off in the Civic?” Lily nodded. “I genuinely thought it was you.” I closed my eyes tightly. She had been awake. She had heard someone steal away with the car. And she had been too frightened to alert me. “Why didn’t you call out to me?” “I figured perhaps you were already downstairs.” I pulled her close into my arms. “You handled it correctly by staying inside.” She began weeping softly. “I didn’t know what course of action to take.” “I understand.” Then she whispered something that forced me to pull back. “Mom?” “Yes?” “He spoke my name.” I froze completely. “What?” “The man did.” She wiped away a tear. “While he stood downstairs, he muttered…” She swallowed hard. “He stated, ‘Lily will not remember this.'” Nobody uttered a sound. Daniel slowly stood upright. “Are you absolute certain?” “Yes.” My daughter’s voice trembled. “He knew my name.” That single detail altered everything. This was far from random. Whoever had stolen the vehicle knew our family intimately. They knew Lily. They knew the exact location of the spare key. They knew about the camera placement. And they knew precisely how to manipulate the police into suspecting her. Daniel phoned the detective once more. This time, the response came instantly. Two additional officers arrived at the scene. They searched the entire property. Photographed the footprint. Retrieved the note. Inspected Lily’s window frame. Then one officer posed another question. “Does your brother know your daughter well?” “Yes.” “Does he visit often?” “Occasionally.” “Could he have gained entry to the house recently?” “I am unsure.” The officer stared at me. “Mrs. Collins, we uncovered something else.” He held up a small plastic evidence bag. Inside rested a silver keychain. I recognized it instantly. It belonged to Evan. I had gifted it to him years ago. A miniature metal compass. “What is that item doing here?” “We recovered it beneath your daughter’s bed.” My stomach twisted violently. “I don’t understand this.” The officer cast a glance at Daniel. “Neither do we.” Then his phone buzzed. He answered it. His expression shifted instantly. “Where?” A brief pause. “Understood. Do not touch anything. We are en route.” He terminated the call. “What happened?” I demanded. “We located the Civic.” “Where is it?” “Roughly three miles from here.” “Is Evan present?” “No.” “Then who is?” The officer looked at me grimly. “Nobody.” I failed to comprehend. “What do you mean?” “The vehicle was abandoned behind an old industrial warehouse.” “Suffered any damage?” “Affirmative.” “Was there blood?” “Negative.” “Fingerprints?” “We are processing it right now.” Then he uttered something that turned my stomach. “The driver’s seat had been adjusted.” “What does that signify?” “It was shoved all the way back.” I stared at him blankly. Lily stood five-foot-three. She could not comfortably reach the pedals with the seat pushed that far back. Neither could I. The individual operating the automobile possessed a much taller build. Then another officer entered the room. He carried an evidence bag. Inside lay a torn piece of fabric. Dark navy colored. And attached to it sat a small silver button. I recognized that button. I had laid eyes on it just yesterday. Upon my brother’s jacket. The police departed to process the newfound evidence. Daniel remained behind. I wandered into the kitchen and poured myself a glass of water. My hand shook so violently I spilled half of it on the counter. “This makes zero sense,” I whispered. “What fails to make sense?” “If Evan committed this, why leave his keychain inside Lily’s bedroom?” Daniel leaned back against the counter. “Perhaps he never did.” I looked at him sharply. “You believe someone is framing Evan as well?” “I suspect we are dealing with an adversary who desires you to believe whatever narrative is most convenient at any given moment.” The words settled heavily between us. I gazed toward the hallway. “What if Evan isn’t the person who took the car after all?” “Then where has he vanished to?” “I lack that answer.” “And therein lies the core problem.” My phone remained with the police department. An old memory suddenly surfaced. “Daniel.” “Yes?” “My parents’ house.” “What about it?” “The crash occurred right outside their front yard.” “Correct.” “My mother claimed my father saw Lily.” “Yes.” “Yet if Evan was not the one…” I trailed off. Daniel grasped the implication immediately. “Then we need to speak directly with your father.” We drove over to Oakridge Lane. My parents’ residence was surrounded by police tape. The silver Civic had crashed straight into a massive oak tree less than fifty yards from their driveway. The front end was completely smashed. Glass littered the pavement. I stood there staring blankly at the wreckage. That automobile had been brand-new less than two weeks prior. Yet the physical damage wasn’t what frightened me most. It was the precise location. The Civic had struck the tree directly across from my parents’ front window. Whoever drove it wanted someone inside that house to witness it. My mother swung the front door open before we even knocked. Her face appeared drained of color. “You arrived.” “Where is Dad?” She hesitated for a beat. “Upstairs.” “I need to speak with him.” “He is sleeping.” “No, he is not.” My mother’s eyes flickered nervously. She knew the truth. “Mom.” She stepped aside. I walked inside. The interior smelled precisely as it always had. Coffee. Old books. Furniture polish. Yet something felt fundamentally different. Wrong. I marched toward my father’s study. Before my hand reached the door, I heard his voice. “Come inside.” I entered. My father sat behind his wooden desk. He looked utterly exhausted. Older than he had just the day prior. “Dad,” I addressed him. He stared blankly at me. Then his eyes shifted to Daniel. “Who is this individual?” “My attorney.” My father’s jaw tightened visibly. “Why have you brought an attorney into my home?” “Because my daughter faces accusations of a serious crime.” “I never accused her.” “You informed the police you witnessed her.” “I saw someone who resembled her.” My blood turned to ice. “You told them it was Lily.” “I stated what I believed.” “You believed my fifteen-year-old daughter drove my car at midnight?” He averted his gaze. “I saw a young girl.” “What girl?” “I am unsure.” “Then why state it was Lily?” He offered no answer. I stepped closer to the desk. “Dad.” Finally, he looked back at me. “I was instructed to do so.” The room fell dead silent. Daniel straightened his posture. “Instructed by whom?” My father stared down at his own hands. “I cannot say.” “Why not?” “Because they possess leverage over me.” A chill swept through me. “What leverage do they hold?” My father looked straight into my eyes. Then he whispered: “They hold the original copy of your mother’s will.” I stared at him in disbelief. “That makes no sense.” “It does if you comprehend what she left behind.” My father slid open a desk drawer. Inside lay an aged photograph. My mother. My father. And a young man standing between them. I recognized the face. Yet it was impossible for him to be there. Because he had supposedly been dead for twenty-seven years. My father noticed the confusion etched across my face. “That photograph,” he explained, “is the precise reason your brother has been fighting with us.” I picked up the picture. “Who is this man?” My father’s eyes filled with an emotion I had never witnessed before. Pure fear. “That,” he whispered, “is the man who was supposed to have died alongside your uncle.” I studied the photograph once more. And then a detail caught my eye. The man in the picture bore the exact same distinctive scar across the back of his left hand. The identical scar the police noted on the driver of my Civic. My fingers went completely numb. “Dad…” He squeezed his eyes shut. “We have been lying to you for twenty-seven years.” Then a piercing scream echoed from downstairs. It belonged to my mother. Followed immediately by the shattering of glass.

PART 5 The sound of breaking glass downstairs was followed instantly by my mother’s piercing scream. Not the startled shriek of someone dropping a dinner plate. Not the frightened gasp of an elderly woman who had heard an unexpected noise. It represented the scream of someone who had just watched a living nightmare step inside her home. I dropped the photograph onto the desk. “Mom!” My father attempted to stand up. His hands gripped the edge of the heavy desk, but his knees nearly buckled beneath him. Daniel caught him by the arm. “Stay right here,” Daniel commanded. However, I was already sprinting. I flew down the staircase two steps at a time. “Mom!” The living room lay completely empty. The front window was smashed to pieces. Frigid night air rushed through the jagged opening, sending curtains fluttering wildly across the floorboards. My mother stood frozen beside the fireplace, one palm pressed flat against her chest. “Where is he?” I demanded frantically. She struggled to find her voice. “Mom, where did he go?” She pointed a shaking finger toward the back door. I took off running. The door swung wide open. Outside, a shadowy figure vanished around the side of the house. I acted on pure impulse. I sprinted after him. “Stop right there!” The figure glanced back for half a second. A dark jacket. A tall frame. Then he disappeared entirely behind the detached garage. I kept chasing until Daniel grabbed firmly onto my arm. “Do not go any further!” “That is him!” “We cannot know that for sure!” “He was standing right here!” Daniel hauled me back behind the brick patio wall. A second later, headlights flared at the end of the driveway. A black SUV accelerated rapidly away into the night. I stared blankly after the retreating vehicle. Daniel pulled out his phone and dialed emergency services. Within minutes, patrol cars swarmed the property. They searched the yard thoroughly. The garage. The alleyway. Absolute zero. Whoever had intruded upon my parents’ home knew precisely how much time they had. And the exact moment to make their escape. When I stepped back inside, my mother was seated upon the sofa. She was quietly weeping. My father sat right beside her. For the very first time in my life, my parents appeared old. Not merely advanced in age. Completely defeated. I sat down across from them. “What on earth have you been hiding from me all this time?” Neither offered an answer. I looked straight at my father. “You claimed the man in that photograph was supposed to have perished twenty-seven years ago.” He nodded slowly. “Who was he?” My mother closed her eyes tightly. “His name was Michael.” I waited for more. “Michael who?” My father finally broke his silence. “Michael Vance.” The name meant nothing to my memory. “Who was he to us?” My mother whispered the truth: “Your mother’s first husband.” The room seemed to tilt sideways. I stared at him in shock. “What?” My mother covered her face with her hands. “Your mother was married prior to marrying your father.” I had always known my mother was married once before. Or at least, I thought I knew. She had consistently maintained her first husband died in an accident long before she met my father. I had never once questioned it. “Then why have I never laid eyes on this photograph?” “Because Michael was never supposed to exist anymore.” “What does that imply?” My father looked toward Daniel, then back at me. “Twenty-seven years ago, Michael vanished.” “Disappeared?” “Yes.” “He didn’t die?” “We genuinely believed he had.” “Why?” My mother resumed crying softly. My father drew a deep breath. “Michael was entangled in a massive financial scheme. He had stolen funds from numerous individuals. An investigation was closing in on him. One night, his automobile plunged off a bridge.” “And his body?” “Never recovered.” I stared at him in disbelief. “So everyone naturally assumed he perished.” “Correct.” “Yet the photograph…” “Was delivered to us three months ago.” I stopped breathing entirely. “Three months ago?” My father nodded grimly. “Your mother received it completely anonymously.” I looked at my mother. “Sent by him?” She nodded. “Michael remained alive.” The room plunged into a heavy silence. “And he has been watching us ever since.” I recalled the mysterious man outside my own house. The security camera. The Civic. The threatening messages. The photograph. Everything suddenly connected in a horrifying web. “Why would he frame Lily?” My mother looked up at me. “Because he wants something specific.” “What could he possibly want?” My father provided the answer. “Your mother’s inheritance.” I let out a single, bitter laugh. Not because anything was remotely amusing. Simply because the entire situation had grown far too impossible to comprehend.
