Julian has always been the kind of person who notices the things most people overlook.

Not birthdays. Not anniversaries. Anyone can save those dates in a phone and allow an app to remind them.

Julian notices the little things. The details you would never think to ask another person to remember.

He can tell I’ve had a terrible day before I even say a word. I’ll come through the door, place my keys down, and he’ll glance at me from the other side of the kitchen.

“Bad day?”

I used to wonder how he always knew. He would simply shrug.

“Your shoulders.”

Or sometimes, “The way you put your keys down.”

He knows I reach for kettle-cooked salt-and-vinegar chips whenever I’m stressed. So whenever I have an important deadline, a bag somehow ends up beside my laptop. I never actually see him put it there.

And he remembers March 14th. The day my grandmother died.

Her name was Ruth. For several years during my childhood, Grandma Ruth was basically the person who raised me. My parents had separated. Mom was working two jobs. So from the age of seven until I was twelve, I lived in Grandma’s little yellow house on Poplar Street.

She grew tomatoes in the backyard. Old country songs were almost always playing somewhere inside the house. She could whistle through two fingers louder than anyone I had ever known. And she cheated shamelessly at Scrabble while insisting she had never broken a single rule in her life.

Grandma died nine years ago. March 14th.

For the first few years after she passed away, every March was hard. I talked about her all the time. Sometimes I cried. Sometimes I told Julian stories he had already heard more than once. Eventually, though, I stopped mentioning the date. I didn’t want every March to turn into a month filled with sadness. And I didn’t want Julian to feel as though it was his responsibility to carry that grief with me.

Then, three years ago, March 14th came around. Julian arrived home carrying a single sunflower wrapped in brown paper. Just one. He handed it to me in the kitchen.

I stared at the flower. “What’s this?”

He looked almost puzzled by my question. “I heard you talking to your cousin at Christmas a couple years ago. You said your grandmother hated roses.”

I looked at him. “She did.” My voice began to tremble. “She thought roses were too dramatic. She called them show-offs.”

Julian smiled. “And sunflowers?”

I laughed through my tears. “She said sunflowers were honest. They just turn toward the sun and don’t pretend to be anything else.”

He extended the flower toward me again. “I figured she would approve.”

I cried so hard that I eventually ended up sitting on the kitchen floor.

That is Julian. Warm. Patient. Attentive in a way that has always made me feel safe. Like arriving home at night and seeing the porch light already waiting for you.

We met when we were twenty-three. In a grocery store. Very romantic.

I was standing in the dairy aisle trying to decide which milk to buy when I reached for a carton of two percent. Someone else reached for the exact same carton at precisely the same moment. Our hands touched.

I looked up. Tall man. Messy brown hair. Glasses. A shopping basket filled with an embarrassing number of frozen pizzas.

“Oh,” he said. “Sorry. You take it.”

“No, you take it.”

“You were first.”

“No, you were.”

He laughed. “You saw me?”

“You were reading yogurt labels for three minutes.”

“They’re confusing.”

I raised an eyebrow. “How?”

“Why does some yogurt have fruit mixed in while other yogurt keeps all the fruit at the bottom? Who decided that?”

I laughed. Ten minutes later, we were sitting in the café across the street. Neither of us ever bought the milk.

Twelve years later, we were married and still choosing each other.

Our life had settled into something almost wonderfully predictable. Julian left for work at 7:30 every morning. He worked downtown as an accountant. Coffee in a travel mug. One sugar. A little milk. A kiss on my forehead before leaving. If work wasn’t too hectic, he called around lunchtime.

“Just wanted to hear your voice.”

Every Thursday after work, he went to the gym. That routine had been going on for about a year. And every evening when he came home, he would walk straight past me toward whatever was cooking. He lifted the lid from every pot. Sniffed.

“What’s this?”

Only then would he finally kiss me hello.

I always teased him. “You might be the most predictable person alive.”

Julian took that as a compliment. “Predictable means dependable.”

That was why Thursday felt so strange.

The front door opened shortly after six.

“Dani?”

Julian’s voice carried through the hallway. It was too loud. Too hurried.

I stepped out of the kitchen with a dish towel in my hands. I had been making chicken soup. The moment I saw him, I knew something was wrong. His tie was loose. His hair looked as though he had been running his hands through it. And he kept checking his pockets. Jacket. Pants. Back pockets.

“My phone is gone.”

I blinked. “You lost something?”

“I know.”

I almost laughed. In twelve years, Julian had hardly misplaced even a pen. He looked genuinely panicked.

“I had it when I left the office. I think. I put it in my jacket pocket. Then I changed at the gym, drove home, and somewhere in between all of that…” He spread his hands. Gone.

For the next hour, we searched everywhere. His briefcase. Every pocket. Every folder. His gym bag. His shoes. Dirty clothes. The car. Under the seats. Inside the glove compartment. Cup holders. Door pockets. Trunk. I even looked through the grocery bags we had left from the previous night, despite there being absolutely no reason his phone should have been inside them.

Nothing.

We tried locating the phone using my laptop. The map loaded. Then it displayed: Location unavailable. Device offline.

“The battery probably died,” Julian said. “It was around twelve percent when I left work.”

He leaned against the kitchen counter with his head lowered. “I have years of client contacts on there.”

“We can replace the phone.”

“It isn’t even just that.” He rubbed his forehead. “I hate losing things.”

I placed both hands on his shoulders. The muscles were tense beneath my fingers. “You’re always saying most people are decent.”

He sighed. “So maybe a decent person found it.”

“Maybe.”

“If anyone could lose a phone and somehow have the nicest person in town find it, it would be you.”

That finally pulled a small laugh from him.

By bedtime, he had mostly accepted that the phone was gone. He ordered a replacement. His office IT department arranged a temporary device for the morning. Still, when we were lying in bed that night, he sighed.

“I feel stupid.”

“For losing a phone?”

“For caring this much.”

I squeezed his hand. “You’re allowed to care.”

He kissed my forehead. “Goodnight, Dani.”

After he fell asleep, I stayed awake for a while. That was when I remembered something. At dinner, when Julian had taken off his watch, I had noticed a green streak across the back of his wrist.

“What happened there?”

He had glanced down. “Marker.”

“Marker?”

“Whiteboard presentation at work. Green marker leaked.”

I accepted the explanation without thinking twice. Why wouldn’t I?

The next morning felt completely ordinary. Julian left early to collect the temporary phone. I cleaned the kitchen. Watered the herbs outside. Started folding laundry on the couch.

Around 9:30, my phone rang. The screen said: Julian. His smiling face appeared beside his name. I answered immediately.

“You found it!”

There was silence. Then a voice I had never heard before said, “I’m sorry, ma’am. I don’t believe we’ve met.”

I sat upright. “Oh.”

“My name is Charlie.” He sounded older. Calm. There was a slight Southern accent. “I found this phone yesterday. It was lying on the ground. It took me half the night to find a charger that worked with it. Once I got enough battery into it, I saw your number listed as the emergency contact.”

Relief washed over me. “You have no idea how happy I am to hear that.”

Charlie chuckled. “I figured somebody was probably worried.”

“My husband searched his car twice.”

“Well, almost lost it for good.”

I smiled. “I really appreciate you calling.”

“No trouble.”

Charlie offered to bring the phone over since he was already going to be running errands. I gave him our address. He repeated each number back carefully. Before we hung up, he said, “My grandfather always told me returning something doesn’t make you generous. It just means you did what you were supposed to do.”

“He sounds like a good man.”

“Mail carrier for forty years,” Charlie said. “Never lost a letter.”

About fifteen minutes later, an older silver pickup pulled into our driveway. A bumper sticker on the back read: I Brake for Turtles.

Charlie stepped out. He was probably in his mid-sixties. Tall. Thin. Gray beard. Jeans. Flannel shirt. Weathered hands. He had the kind of eyes that crinkled at the corners whenever he smiled.

“You must be Dani.”

“Daniella technically.”

He laughed. “So he really does call you Dani.”

“He does.”

Charlie handed me the phone. There was a tiny scratch near one corner. Other than that, it looked fine. Julian’s lock screen appeared. A picture from our wedding. The two of us laughing.

“It’s perfect.” I looked at Charlie. “Can I give you something? Gas money? Anything?”

He immediately shook his head. “No need.”

He turned toward his truck. Then curiosity got the better of me.

“Charlie?”

He turned around.

“Where exactly did you find it? Julian has been trying to figure out whether he lost it at work or at the gym.”

Charlie answered without hesitation. “Outside the family visitation center downtown. Grant Street.”

My smile disappeared. The phone suddenly seemed heavier in my hand.

I knew the building. A low brick structure on Grant Street. Small playground outside. A painted rainbow above the entrance. It was a place used for supervised visits between children and parents who, for various legal or family reasons, couldn’t meet without supervision. Custody disputes. Recovery programs. Court arrangements. Complicated families. Children sat there waiting for parents who sometimes came. Sometimes didn’t.

And the center was nowhere near Julian’s office. It wasn’t anywhere near his gym either. Grant Street was twenty minutes away, in the opposite direction.

Charlie noticed my expression. “I’m sorry. Did I say something wrong?”

I stared down at Julian’s phone. For twelve years, Julian had been the most reliable person I knew. The man who came home at almost the same time. Who called me at lunch. Who went to the gym every Thursday. Now I was standing on our porch wondering why his phone had been lying outside a family visitation center.

Charlie shifted awkwardly. “I hope I didn’t cause trouble.”

I couldn’t answer. Because I had been inside that building before.

When I was nineteen, I volunteered there for a college psychology course. Four hours every Saturday. I thought it would be simple. Coloring with children. Reading stories. Playing games. It wasn’t.

I still remembered the waiting room. Yellow walls. Blue carpet. Plastic chairs. Donated toys. Picture books with missing pages. And a huge window looking out toward the parking lot. The children watched that window constantly. Every car that pulled in. Every door that opened. Waiting.

There was one little girl I never forgot. Lily. Six years old. Purple ribbons in her pigtails. Every Saturday, she brought a new drawing for her mother. A rainbow. A cat. A house.

During the first two weeks I volunteered, her mother came. On the third week, she didn’t. Lily sat beside the window for an hour holding a drawing of herself and her mother holding hands. At the top, written in purple letters, were the words: Me and Mommy.

Eventually, a staff member knelt beside her. “Your mom couldn’t come today, sweetheart.”

Lily didn’t cry. That was the part that broke me. She simply folded her drawing into a neat little square. Put it in her pocket. And said, “Okay.”

As if she already understood what disappointment felt like.

I cried in my car for an hour afterward. That evening, I had dinner with Julian. Our fourth date. He noticed immediately that something was wrong. Of course he did. I told him about Lily. About the children watching the parking lot. About the folded drawing.

“It’s the loneliest room I’ve ever seen,” I told him. Then I said something I had almost completely forgotten. “Nobody should have to wait for someone who might never come.”

Julian held my hand across the table. He understood exactly what that place meant to me. So why had he been there?

Charlie brought me back to the present. “Dani?”

“I’m sorry.”

He hesitated. “You look worried.”

“I am.”

Then Charlie said something that made my heartbeat jump. “I thought you might be.”

I stared at him. “You know Julian?”

“I wouldn’t say I know him well.” He glanced toward his truck. “But I’ve seen him.”

“How often?”

“Every Thursday.”

I stopped breathing.

“For almost a year.”

Yesterday had been Thursday. Gym day. Every Thursday for almost a year. Julian had supposedly been at the gym. Instead, Charlie had seen him at the visitation center.

My mind immediately filled with the worst explanations. A child I knew nothing about. Another relationship. A custody case. Another family. Twelve years of marriage suddenly felt less certain.

Charlie must have noticed the panic on my face. He raised a hand. “Dani, I think you’re imagining something that isn’t happening.”

“Then please tell me.”

He hesitated. “It should probably come from Julian.”

“My husband has been going somewhere every Thursday for a year and lying to me about it.” My voice cracked. “I need to understand.”

Charlie’s expression softened. “I volunteer there.”

I frowned. “At the center?”

“Yes. Most Thursdays. Have for about six years.”

He explained that his grandson had once gone through supervised visitation. After seeing what the waiting room was like, Charlie continued volunteering even after his family no longer needed the service.

Then he said, “Julian volunteers too.”

I stared at him. “What?”

“Every Thursday.”

“He never told me.”

“I don’t think he wanted people to know.”

“Why?”

Charlie thought for a moment. “Probably because he wasn’t doing it so people would know.”

Then he told me what Julian actually did there. Every Thursday around four, Julian came straight from work. Still wearing his tie. Sometimes he read stories. Sometimes he colored. Sometimes he helped children build castles out of cardboard boxes. He did ridiculous character voices. Apparently, the children loved them. Sometimes the entire waiting room turned into a dinosaur world. Julian would crawl across the carpet roaring because one particular five-year-old thought it was hilarious.

Yesterday, the children had built a cardboard volcano. Then they painted it green.

Green.

My mind went back to Julian’s wrist. The streak I had noticed at dinner. Marker, he had said. It hadn’t been marker. It had been paint from a cardboard volcano.

Charlie smiled. “One little boy especially loves him.”

Five years old. He had been coming every Thursday for roughly ten months. His father was supposed to arrive at 4:30. Sometimes he did. Sometimes he didn’t. The boy refused to play unless Julian agreed to become Daddy Dinosaur.

I almost laughed. “Daddy Dinosaur?”

Charlie nodded seriously. “Oh, yes. The kids assign everybody roles.”

Apparently, one staff member was Baby Triceratops. Charlie had somehow been given the role of Confused Turtle.

I glanced at the bumper sticker on his truck. “Maybe because you brake for turtles.”

Charlie looked at the sticker. Then back at me. “You know, I never thought of that.”

“And Julian?”

“Always Daddy Dinosaur.”

Then Charlie told me what had happened the previous afternoon. The boy’s father didn’t come. It was the third week in a row. When the visit time ended, the little boy ran after Julian into the parking lot. He wrapped both arms around Julian’s legs and refused to let go. Julian knelt down on the sidewalk and held him. That was probably when the phone slipped from his jacket into the grass.

Charlie found it later while locking up.

I closed my eyes. Every terrible possibility I had imagined disappeared one after another. No second family. No secret child. No other woman. Just Julian kneeling on the sidewalk, holding a five-year-old whose father hadn’t shown up.

But one question remained. “Why didn’t he tell me?”

Charlie walked back toward his truck. When he returned, he was carrying something small. A green plastic T. rex. It was cheap. Worn. One plastic eye was missing and had been replaced with a crooked marker drawing. The tail had broken off at some point and was held together with several layers of tape. Obviously, someone loved it.

Charlie placed it in my hand. “The little guy told me Daddy Dinosaur forgot this.”

I stared at it. “I can’t take this. It must belong to him.”

Charlie nodded. “It does.”

“Then why did he give it away?”

“He said Daddy Dinosaur needs it more.”

“Why?”

Charlie smiled. “He said heroes always forget something.”

I swallowed hard. Then Charlie reached into his shirt pocket again. He pulled out a folded piece of construction paper. When he opened it, I saw a homemade crown. Yellow paper. Crayon. Crooked stickers. Stars. Hearts. One sticker said Great Job! Across the front, in uneven blue letters, someone had written: King Dinosaur.

I laughed through my tears. Charlie smiled. “They made Julian wear that yesterday.”

“All afternoon?”

“Almost. He tried taking it off once to answer a work call.”

“What happened?”

“The children held a vote.”

“And?”

“Six to one against him.”

For the first time since hearing the words Grant Street, I genuinely laughed.

Then something clicked in my mind. I told Charlie about Lily. About volunteering there in college. About crying to Julian during our fourth date. About the sentence I had said. Nobody should have to wait for somebody who might never come.

Charlie nodded slowly. “I think he remembers.”

My chest tightened. “What?”

Charlie explained that several months earlier, while they were cleaning the waiting room, he had asked Julian why he volunteered. A busy accountant. No children of his own. Driving across town every Thursday.

Julian had answered, “My wife once told me this was the loneliest room she’d ever seen.”

Charlie looked at me. “He said if even one kid knew somebody would show up every Thursday no matter what, maybe the waiting wouldn’t feel quite so lonely.”

I started crying. I had forgotten that conversation. Twelve years ago. Fourth date. Italian restaurant. Julian hadn’t.

Eventually, Charlie checked his watch. “I need to get my granddaughter from ballet.”

“Charlie, thank you.”

He shook his head. “Thank your husband.”

Then he climbed into his old silver pickup and drove away.

I remained on the porch for a long time. Julian’s phone in one hand. The little green dinosaur in the other. The paper crown across my lap. King Dinosaur.

I kept thinking about all those Thursdays. All those afternoons Julian had driven across town in a suit and tie. All the cardboard castles. All the books. All the ridiculous dinosaur noises. All the children waiting beside a window. And one little boy who knew that even when his father didn’t arrive, Daddy Dinosaur would.

I sent Julian an email at work. We need to talk when you get home.

The moment I sent it, I realized how frightening that sentence sounded. Four minutes later, he replied. Everything okay, Dani?

I looked down at the dinosaur. Come home safely. We’ll talk then.

The next few hours seemed endless. Eventually, I arranged everything on the kitchen table. Julian’s recovered phone. The T. rex. And the yellow paper crown. I sat there waiting.

At 3:15, I heard the front door. Julian had left work early.

“Dani?”

“In the kitchen.”

He appeared still wearing his suit and carrying his briefcase. “You scared me. I told my boss there was a family emergency. What happened?”

Then he saw the table. He stopped. The briefcase slipped from his hand. For the first time since I had known him, Julian seemed completely unable to speak.

“Charlie found your phone,” I said. Then I raised the paper crown. “He found this too.”

Julian rubbed the back of his neck. His face turned red. “I was hoping you wouldn’t find out like this.”

I walked toward him. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

He looked at me carefully. “I wasn’t hiding another life.”

“I know.”

“Charlie told you?”

“Pretty much everything.”

Julian groaned. “The castle?”

“Yes.”

“The volcano?”

“Yes.”

I pointed toward his wrist. “So that wasn’t marker.”

He almost smiled. “No.”

“Daddy Dinosaur?”

Julian covered his face. “Oh, God.”

“And Confused Turtle.”

“Charlie is an excellent turtle.”

Then his expression grew serious. “You told me something once.”

I waited.

“You told me the waiting room was the saddest place you’d ever seen.”

I nodded. “I remember now.”

“You told me about Lily.”

I stared at him. “You remember her name?”

“I remember everything from that night.” Julian’s voice became softer. “You were crying because children sat there waiting for people who didn’t always come.” He paused. “And for years I kept thinking about what you said.”

“What?”

“What if somebody came anyway?”

My eyes filled again.

“Not their parent,” Julian continued. “Not somebody who could fix everything. Just somebody who always showed up. So the kid wouldn’t be alone while waiting.”

“So you became Daddy Dinosaur.”

He laughed quietly. “I guess I did.”

“But why lie about it for an entire year?”

He sighed. “I’m sorry about that.” He took both my hands. “Because I know you.”

I frowned. “What is that supposed to mean?”

“You would have started volunteering too.”

I opened my mouth. He continued before I could respond. “Immediately.”

I smiled despite myself. “Probably.”

“Definitely.” He squeezed my hands. “You would have learned every child’s name. Their birthday. Their favorite snack. Their favorite color.”

He wasn’t wrong.

“You’d spend your lunch breaks buying craft supplies.”

Also true.

“And every time a parent didn’t show up, you would carry that kid home emotionally.”

My smile faded.

“You’d cry in the car.” He brushed a tear from my cheek. “You carry everything, Dani. Work. Your mother. Your grandmother every March. Everyone else’s sadness.” His voice softened. “I wanted this to be one thing you didn’t have to carry.”

I stared at him.

“One thing I could carry for you,” he said.

For a moment, I couldn’t speak. I looked at the man I had loved for twelve years. The man from the dairy aisle. The man who remembered sunflowers. The man who remembered something I had said on our fourth date when even I had forgotten it.

I opened the paper crown. Then carefully placed it on his head. It sat crooked.

Julian laughed. “What are you doing?”

I smiled through my tears. “Every Daddy Dinosaur deserves his crown.”

His eyes filled with tears. “I wasn’t trying to be a hero.”

“I know.” I rested my forehead against his. “You remembered something I forgot.”

Later that evening, we sat on the couch eating cold soup. Julian was still wearing the crown. He claimed he had forgotten. I didn’t remind him.

“The boy’s name is Theo,” he said.

“The one with the dinosaur?”

Julian nodded. “He’s five.”

Charlie had told me Theo’s father had missed three Thursdays. Julian explained more. Theo’s father was in recovery. He had been sober for almost a year. He had a job at a car wash. But he didn’t own a car. Sometimes the bus ran late. Sometimes everything simply went wrong.

“He really is trying,” Julian said.

“But Theo still waits.”

“Yes.”

Theo sat beside the window every Thursday. Watching the parking lot. The first time Julian volunteered, Theo’s father didn’t arrive. Julian sat beside him.

“I didn’t know what to say. I’m an accountant. I have no idea how to talk to five-year-olds.”

“What did you say?”

“I asked what his dinosaur was called.”

“And?”

Julian smiled. “He looked at me like I was an idiot and said T. rexes don’t have names because they’re too scary.”

I laughed.

“Then he told me I could be a dinosaur too. But I had to be the daddy one because I was big.”

“And you’ve been Daddy Dinosaur ever since.”

“Apparently.”

I told Julian what Charlie had said. That Theo believed heroes always forgot something.

Julian looked at the little plastic dinosaur. “I have to return this next week.”

“He sleeps with it, right?”

“Every night.”

“Then why give it to you?”

Julian stared at the toy for a long moment. Finally, he said, “His dad didn’t come.”

I waited.

“But I did.”

Then I understood. Theo hadn’t given Julian his favorite toy. He had created a reason for Julian to return. The only way a five-year-old knew how to make sure somebody would come back.

“Julian?”

“Yeah?”

“Can I come next Thursday?”

He looked at me. “Dani.”

“I know.”

“You’re going to take everything home with you.”

“I know.”

“You’ll cry.”

“Probably.”

He hesitated.

Then I said, “You’ve been carrying it alone for a year.”

Julian looked away.

“You lie awake too, don’t you? On the nights Theo’s dad doesn’t arrive.”

He didn’t answer. He didn’t have to.

“You don’t have to carry this by yourself either.”

Finally, he nodded. “One day a week.”

“Thursday.”

“No Saturdays.”

“Okay.”

“No Tuesdays.”

“Fine.”

“No skipping lunch to buy glitter.”

I smiled. “Absolutely no promises about glitter.”

He laughed. The paper crown slipped from his head.

The following Thursday, I went with him. I left workian thought for a moment. Then repeated the words I had once given him. “Nobody should have to wait for someone who might never come it.” Then he looked early and met him outside the visitation center. Julian was standing beside his car in his tie, holding a paper bag.

“What’s in there?”

“Apple juice.”

“For Theo?”

“The boxes have dinosaurs on them.”

“Of course.”

We walked toward the familiar brick building. I hadn’t been inside for fourteen years. My hands began to shake. Julian noticed. Of course he did.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Me neither.”

I looked at him. “Every week?”

“Every week.”

Then he took my hand.

Inside, the room had changed a little. Different carpet. Different paint. Newer books. But the plastic chairs were still arranged beneath the large window facing the parking lot. And in the chair closest to the glass sat a little boy. Five years old. Messy brown hair. Dinosaur shirt. Shoes that flashed when he moved. He was watching the parking lot.

Then he heard the door. Turned around. Saw Julian. His entire face lit up.

“Daddy Dinosaur!”

Theo rushed across the room. His shoes flashed with every step. He crashed into Julian’s legs.

“You came back!”

Julian laughed and knelt down.

Theo immediately asked, “Did you bring him?”

Julian reached into his jacket. Pulled out the green T. rex. Theo hugged it tightly against his chest.

“I knew you’d come back.” Then he whispered, “Heroes always come back.”

A moment later, Theo noticed me. He studied me very seriously. “Who’s she?”

“That’s my wife. Dani.”

Theo considered this. “Is she a dinosaur?”

Julian looked at me. I knelt beside them.

“I’d like to be. What kind should I be?”

Theo tilted his head. Then made his decision. “You can be Mommy Dinosaur. Daddy Dinosaur needs somebody.”

For a second, I forgot how to breathe. Julian squeezed my hand.

“Okay,” I whispered. “Mommy Dinosaur it is.”

Theo nodded, satisfied. “Good. We need a nest.” He pointed across the room. “Charlie’s the turtle. He doesn’t know what he’s doing.”

Charlie sat surrounded by cardboard boxes. He waved. “I really don’t.”

At 4:34, Theo’s father came through the front door. Four minutes late. Out of breath. Still wearing his car wash uniform.

“Sorry. The bus was late.”

Theo looked up. Then dropped everything. Crayons. Cardboard. Even the dinosaur.

“Daddy!”

He ran across the room. His father dropped to his knees and caught him. Held him tightly. His shoulders shook.

Julian and I watched quietly. After a while, Julian picked up the green dinosaur and placed it carefully on Theo’s chair beside the window. Where he would find it later.

On the drive home, I cried. Exactly as Julian had predicted. He never said I told you so. He simply held my hand across the center console.

“Is it like that every week?”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Sometimes his dad doesn’t come.” He paused. “Those weeks are harder.”

“How do you keep doing it?”

Julian thought for a moment. Then repeated the words I had once given him. “Nobody should have to wait for someone who might never come.”

I nodded. “I remember.”

“I can’t fix Theo’s father.” He squeezed my hand. “I can’t fix transportation. Recovery. Custody. Any of it.” Then he looked at me. “But while Theo is waiting, I can make sure he isn’t waiting alone.”

The paper crown hangs on our refrigerator now. Held in place by a sunflower magnet. King Dinosaur. The Great Job sticker is still peeling from one corner.

Julian once tried taking it down. “People are going to ask questions.”

I put it right back. “Good.”

I go with him every Thursday now. Only Thursdays. That was our agreement. And yes, I sometimes skip lunch and buy glitter. Julian pretends this bothers him. It doesn’t.

For years, I thought I knew my husband completely. Coffee at 7:30. One sugar. Forehead kiss. Thursday gym. Every pot lid lifted before he said hello.

Then a stranger stood on my porch and told me where Julian’s missing phone had been found. For one awful moment, I thought the man I trusted most had been living another life behind my back.

I was right about one thing. There was a secret. It simply wasn’t the kind I feared.

Sometimes the biggest thing the person you love is hiding isn’t betrayal. It isn’t another partner. Another family. Another life. Sometimes it’s simply the good they’ve been doing quietly. Every Thursday afternoon. On their hands and knees on a green carpet. Wearing a paper crown. When they thought nobody was watching.

I’ll come through the door, place my keys down, and he’ll glance at me…
