I knew which clients had the power to elicit a sigh from him before he even lifted the receiver. I knew that Tuesday mornings were typically the least opportune time to present him with a complex dilemma, whereas Friday afternoons, as the office grew still, were frequently when he turned unexpectedly reflective.
\nI was familiar with his routines, his shifts in mood, his calendar, and the minute details most individuals simply overlooked.
\nYet, on one particular Friday afternoon, at a quiet park located ten minutes away from our offices, I came to realize there was one aspect of Richard Bennett I had fundamentally misread.
\nHis true motives.
\nThe journey began seven years prior, at a time when I was twenty-four.
\nI was in desperate need of employment.
\nMy resume was painfully brief, my professional background virtually nonexistent, and during the course of my interview, my hands trembled so violently I nearly overturned the glass of water resting beside me.
\nRichard was already in his seventies.
\nBy that stage in his life, he had spent decades transforming the firm from a modest operation into a respected regional enterprise. Staff members spoke of him with an unusual blend of deep respect and apprehension.
\nHe was never cruel.
\nHe refrained from shouting at workers. He never sought to humiliate people during meetings or hurl objects when frustration took hold.
\nHe had no need for such tactics.
\nRichard had mastered a far more potent method.
\nHe would merely lower his spectacles slightly, gaze at you across the rims, and maintain absolute silence.
\nThat single look had the power to make anyone second-guess every decision they had made since waking up.
\nI was subjected to that look on multiple occasions during my interview.
\nI remained certain I had blown my chances.
\nThen, near the conclusion, he closed my resume and posed a single query.
\n“What reason can you give me to hire someone possessing next to no experience?”
\nI swallowed hard.
\nI could easily have fabricated something impressive. I might have feigned a degree of confidence I was far from feeling.
\nInstead, I opted for honesty.
\n“You probably shouldn’t.”
\nA single eyebrow lifted.
\n“However, if you do take the chance,” I pursued, “I give you my word that I will learn.”
\nFor the very first time throughout the entire interview, a smile touched his face.
\nIt was barely perceptible, yet I caught it.
\n“Monday morning. Eight sharp,” he stated.
\nThat was how everything commenced.
\nI stepped into the company as an anxious young worker who triple-checked every correspondence prior to hitting send.
\nAs time progressed, I acquired new skills.
\nThen I developed proficiency.
\nEventually, people began depending on me.
\nIn time, I advanced to become Richard’s personal assistant.
\nMy duties expanded far beyond answering telephone calls or organizing appointments. I coordinated conferences, drafted documents, managed difficult clients, resolved scheduling crises, and occasionally solved problems before Richard even realized they existed.
\nThere were late nights.
\nThere were weekends.
\nThere were mornings when I reported to duty while genuinely ill because a crucial meeting could not be rescheduled.
\nI do not recount that with a sense of pride today. Looking back, I recognize that no occupation should consume one’s entire existence.
\nAt that juncture, however, I felt a heavy burden of responsibility.
\nMy earnings supported more than just myself.
\nMy mother resided with me, and my younger brother remained enrolled in school. I served as the sole wage earner in our household with a dependable income.
\nForfeiting my position would not merely be an inconvenience.
\nIt would directly impact everyone I held dear.
\nAnd that reality explains why the final week of my former life filled me with such profound dread.
\nIt all kicked off on a Monday.
\nRichard summoned me into his private office just before lunchtime.
\nHe was reviewing a bundle of paperwork as I stepped inside.
\n“Emily,” he spoke without raising his eyes, “do you have any commitments after four o’clock this coming Friday?”
\nI mentally scanned my schedule.
\n“Negative.”
\n“Splendid. Wait for me downstairs.”
\nI paused momentarily.
\n“Are we attending a meeting?”
\nRichard finally lifted his gaze.
\n“No.”
\n“A client dinner?”
\n“No.”
\n“Where are we heading, then?”
\nHe redirected his focus back to the documents.
\n“Just be downstairs when the clock strikes four.”
\nSomething in his tone set me slightly on edge.
\n“Will anyone else be joining us?”
\n“No. Just the two of us.”
\nI departed from his office in a state of confusion.
\nIn isolation, that exchange likely would not have troubled me.
\nYet Tuesday brought its own developments.
\nAs I was making my way toward the accounting division, I caught sight of the department head exiting Richard’s suite.
\nShe was clutching several folders.
\nOne of them happened to be mine.
\nI spotted my full name clearly printed upon the tab.
\nShe noticed me observing her and promptly slid that particular folder beneath the others.
\n“Is everything alright?” I inquired.
\n“Of course.”
\nHer reply arrived far too swiftly.
\nThat marked the precise moment I genuinely began to question whether something was amiss.
\nBy Wednesday, Richard had placed calls to the corporate attorney on two separate occasions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
And throughout the majority of those seven years, I was convinced I understood him better than almost anyone else within the company.
