I got them.\u201d<br \/>\nHe paused.<br \/>\n\u201cI honestly don&#8217;t know if I want any sort of relationship beyond that.\u201d<br \/>\nMark stepped forward a little.<br \/>\n\u201cDon\u2019t I at least deserve a single chance?\u201d<br \/>\nDaniel gently raised a hand to pause him.<br \/>\n\u201cGive him some space, Mark.\u201d<br \/>\nMark looked intensely frustrated.<br \/>\n\u201cYou always have to interfere, don&#8217;t you?\u201d<br \/>\nDaniel let out a heavy sigh.<br \/>\n\u201cI should have been a lot more honest with you years ago.\u201d<br \/>\nMark stared at him hard.<br \/>\nDaniel pressed on.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat happened between you and Claire was never healthy.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou don&#8217;t get to judge my past relationships.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI should have spoken up much sooner than I did.\u201d<br \/>\nDaniel\u2019s voice remained completely steady.<br \/>\n\u201cControlling someone\u2019s finances, restricting their choices, and making it nearly impossible for them to leave was flat-out wrong.\u201d<br \/>\nMark offered no response to that.<br \/>\n\u201cFor nearly twenty years,\u201d Daniel continued, \u201cI convinced myself that keeping my distance from you was enough.\u201d<br \/>\nHe shook his head slowly.<br \/>\n\u201cIt wasn&#8217;t.\u201d<br \/>\nWith that, Daniel walked over to the front door and pulled it wide open.<br \/>\n\u201cI think it\u2019s best if we stop pretending we still have a friendship.\u201d<br \/>\nMark looked utterly stunned.<br \/>\n\u201cDaniel.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI truly wish I had said these words years ago.\u201d<br \/>\nMark glanced one last time toward Evan.<br \/>\n\u201cAnd what about him?\u201d<br \/>\nDaniel looked at the young man.<br \/>\n\u201cThat decision belongs entirely to Evan.\u201d<br \/>\nEvan gave a subtle nod.<br \/>\n\u201cI need time.\u201d<br \/>\nMark looked ready to argue further, but then stopped himself.<br \/>\nFinally, he bent down and picked up his heavy tool case.<br \/>\nWithout uttering another word, he turned and walked out the door.<br \/>\nDaniel pulled the door shut behind him.<br \/>\nFor several long seconds, absolutely nobody spoke.<br \/>\nThen Evan reached up to wipe a stray tear from his eye.<br \/>\n\u201cMy mom really trusted you.\u201d<br \/>\nDaniel looked back at him.<br \/>\nEvan offered a small, appreciative nod.<br \/>\n\u201cNow I finally understand why.\u201d<br \/>\nDaniel covered his face with his hands for a brief moment.<br \/>\nMaya walked right over and wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug.<br \/>\n\u201cYou were still pretty rude when we first walked in,\u201d she whispered teasingly.<br \/>\nA small, genuine laugh escaped him.<br \/>\nEvan wiped his cheek with his sleeve.<br \/>\n\u201cSo\u2026\u201d<br \/>\nHe glanced over at Daniel.<br \/>\n\u201cJust to be completely clear, it wasn&#8217;t the eyeliner that bothered you?\u201d<br \/>\nDaniel finally chuckled out loud.<br \/>\n\u201cNo, it wasn&#8217;t.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cGood,\u201d Evan said with a faint smile. \u201cBecause this took me twenty minutes to put on.\u201d<br \/>\nMaya rolled her eyes playfully.<br \/>\nAnd for the very first time that evening, the heavy tension in the room finally lifted.<br \/>\nDaniel couldn&#8217;t undo what had happened nearly twenty years ago.<br \/>\nHe couldn&#8217;t rewrite Claire\u2019s difficult past.<br \/>\nAnd he couldn&#8217;t dictate what kind of relationship Evan might eventually choose to have with Mark.<br \/>\nBut on this night, he finally stopped hiding behind silence.<br \/>\nHe spoke his truth out loud.<br \/>\nHe fully respected Evan\u2019s personal boundaries.<br \/>\nAnd he successfully closed a chapter of his past that had remained unfinished for far too long.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; MY DAUGHTER HAD NEVER BROUGHT A BOYFRIEND HOME BEFORE, SO I EXPECTED MY HUSBAND TO TEASE HER WITH A FEW CLASSIC OVERPROTECTIVE-DAD JOKES.
