“Her parents did.”

The words came out more forcefully than I meant them to.

“My sister brought her here. Paige already had the makeup on when she arrived. I didn’t hurt her.”

“I understand.”

“No, you don’t.”

My voice broke.

“My sister told me Paige was teething. She handed me the diaper bag and left. Twenty minutes later, Paige started screaming. She wouldn’t let me move her leg, so I checked her. That’s when I noticed the makeup.”

The investigator studied me carefully.

“Did you put it there?”

“No.”

“Did you remove it?”

“I used one baby wipe.”

“How much did you remove?”

“Only a small section.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed to see what was underneath.”

She nodded.

“That matches what the hospital documented.”

For the first time, I felt a small sense of relief.

Then she continued.

“But your sister gave us a different account.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did she say?”

“She says the makeup had already been removed when you called her.”

A chill went through me.

“That doesn’t make any sense.”

The investigator’s phone rang.

She glanced at the screen, walked several steps away, and answered.

I remained motionless beside the hospital wall.

Through the glass, I could see nurses moving around Paige.

My niece.

My tiny, six-month-old niece.

A nurse had wrapped a blanket around her, and even from where I stood, she looked incredibly small against the hospital bed.

I covered my mouth with both hands.

Please be okay.

Please.

A few minutes later, the investigator came back.

“We need to ask you a few more questions.”

“Can I see Paige?”

“Not yet.”

“Why not?”

“The medical team is still completing the examination.”

“Is she going to be okay?”

The investigator hesitated.

“She has a fracture.”

The word struck me harder than anything else.

“A fracture?”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

The screaming.

Her rigid little body.

The way she barely moved her leg.

The makeup.

Suddenly, I felt nauseous.

“Was the injury recent?”

“We don’t know yet.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means the doctors are studying the pattern of the injury to determine whether it’s acute or whether there may be signs of an older injury.”

I looked back toward the trauma room.

“Older?”

The investigator didn’t answer.

A nurse walked through the doors carrying a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was the baby wipe I had used.

I stared at it.

“You kept that?”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t hurt her.”

“I understand what you’re saying.”

“No. Please listen to me.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“I love that baby. I would never hurt her.”

The investigator’s expression softened slightly.

“I believe that you believe what you’re telling me. But we have to consider every possibility.”

I nodded, even though I didn’t want to.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message.

From Kate.

Don’t say anything else to them.

I stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

You don’t understand what you’ve gotten yourself into.

My fingers went numb.

I showed the investigator.

She read both messages.

“Did she send anything else?”

“No.”

“Don’t respond yet.”

I nodded.

Before I could put my phone away, another message arrived.

This time, there were no words.

It was a photograph.

I opened it.

My breath caught.

It was Paige.

She was lying on a changing mat.

Her green sleeper was pulled down around her waist.

The same beige makeup covered her left thigh.

But the photograph had been taken before Kate came to my house.

I knew because the blanket underneath Paige was one I kept at my sister’s house.

I looked at the investigator.

“This was taken before she came here.”

“How do you know?”

“That changing mat belongs to my sister. And that blanket is from her house.”

The investigator photographed my phone.

“Who sent this?”

“Kate.”

She stared at the image.

Then she looked back at me.

“Did you know this picture existed?”

“No.”

“Has your sister ever shown it to you?”

“No.”

“Do you know why she would send it?”

“I don’t know.”

The investigator’s phone rang again.

Her expression immediately changed.

She answered.

“Yes?”

She listened.

Then she looked through the glass toward the trauma room.

“Understood.”

She ended the call.

“What happened?” I asked.

“The pediatric specialist reviewed the imaging.”

My throat tightened.

“And?”

“There are two injuries.”

I couldn’t speak.

“Your niece has a fresh fracture in her left femur.”

My knees almost gave way.

“And there is evidence of an older healing fracture.”

The hallway seemed to shift beneath me.

An older fracture.

Paige had been hurt before.

And someone had covered the newest injury with makeup.

The investigator continued in a quiet voice.

“That changes the scope of the investigation.”

I looked at the photograph on my phone.

At Paige’s tiny face.

At the makeup covering her skin.

Then something in the picture caught my attention.

“Wait.”

The investigator stopped.

I zoomed in.

There was a faint reflection in the metal edge of the changing table.

A hand.

Only part of it.

But something distinctive was visible around the wrist.

A thin silver bracelet.

I knew that bracelet.

My sister wore it every day.

I looked at the investigator.

“That picture wasn’t taken by someone who discovered her injured.”

“What do you mean?”

“Kate took it.”

“How can you be certain?”

“Because of the bracelet.”

I pointed toward the reflection.

“She always wears that bracelet.”

The investigator looked again.

Then her phone rang.

This time, she didn’t answer right away.

The number displayed on the screen belonged to my sister.

She looked at me.

Then she answered on speaker.

“Kate?”

Silence.

Then my sister’s voice came through.

Soft.

Shaking.

“Is Ally there?”

“Yes.”

Another pause.

“Put her on.”

The investigator looked at me.

I took the phone.

“Kate?”

My sister inhaled sharply.

“Ally, listen to me.”

“What happened to Paige?”

“I never wanted this to happen.”

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?”

“I was trying to protect her.”

“From what?”

She began to cry.

Then she whispered five words that changed everything.

“Her father isn’t who you think.”

The call ended.

Part 3 — What Kate Had Been Hiding

I stared at the phone.

“Kate?”

Nothing.

“Kate!”

The call was over.

The investigator took the phone from my hand.

“Do you know who Paige’s father is?”

“Yes.”

At least, I thought I did.

“His name is Daniel.”

“Does Daniel live with Kate?”

“Yes.”

“Was he home this morning?”

“I don’t know.”

The investigator immediately made another call.

I sank into the chair.

Everything I thought I understood about that morning was beginning to break apart.

Kate had arrived looking exhausted.

She had told me Paige was teething.

She had said I was the only person she trusted to make the call if the baby became too fussy.

Why would she say that?

Why had she taken a picture of Paige’s injured leg?

Why had she covered the bruise?

And why had she told the investigator that I had caused the injury?

The trauma-room doors opened.

A pediatric specialist walked toward us.

“Are you Paige’s aunt?”

“Yes.”

“I need to give you an update.”

I stood.

“She is stable. The fracture has been immobilized, and we’re monitoring her pain.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“Can I see her?”

“In a moment.”

I swallowed.

“You said there was an older injury?”

“Yes.”

“How old?”

“We can’t give you an exact date, but the imaging indicates that it happened some time before today’s injury.”

My hands began to shake.

“Could it have happened accidentally?”

“That depends on the mechanism and circumstances. Babies can suffer accidental fractures, but we have to consider the entire clinical picture.”

“And the makeup?”

The doctor paused.

“That concerns us because it appears to have been deliberately applied over the bruised area.”

I nodded.

“That is what I thought.”

The doctor looked toward the investigator.

“We’ve also documented additional bruising at different stages of healing.”

My chest tightened.

“How much?”

The doctor didn’t answer directly.

“Enough that the hospital has activated the appropriate child-protection protocol.”

I covered my mouth.

Paige hadn’t simply been injured that morning.

Something had been happening for longer.

A few minutes later, the investigator returned.

“Daniel wasn’t at the house.”

“Where is he?”

“He says he’s at work.”

“Did you speak with him?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Her expression gave nothing away.

“He says Kate has been acting strangely for several weeks.”

I looked at her.

“Strangely in what way?”

“He says she became increasingly afraid that someone was watching the baby.”

I remembered Kate’s exhausted expression.

Her trembling hands.

The way she had looked at Paige before leaving.

“What did he mean by watching her?”

“He wasn’t specific.”

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice whispered, “Are you Ally?”

“Yes.”

“Don’t trust your sister.”

My entire body went still.

“Who is this?”

“Ask her about the basement.”

The call ended.

I stared at my screen.

The investigator moved closer.

“What did he say?”

I told her.

She immediately made another call.

I could barely breathe.

The basement.

Kate’s house had one.

But why would someone tell me to ask about it?

An hour later, the investigator and I were standing outside my sister’s house.

Police had secured the property.

The front door stood open.

Inside, everything looked normal.

Too normal.

Toys were scattered across the living room.

An unfinished bottle sat on the kitchen counter.

A tiny pink sock was underneath the sofa.

I picked it up.

It belonged to Paige.

The investigator noticed something on the floor.

A trail.

Small beige powder marks.

We followed them toward the basement.

The door was locked.

An officer forced it open.

The smell hit me immediately.

Baby powder.

So strong that my eyes began to water.

Boxes lined the walls.

Old baby clothes.

Medical supplies.

Several bottles of concealer.

I froze.

“What is this?”

The investigator opened one of the boxes.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Paige.

Sleeping.

Being changed.

Crying.

Being held.

My stomach turned.

“These were taken over several months.”

The investigator examined them carefully.

Then she discovered something beneath the photographs.

A notebook.

She opened it.

Every page contained dates, times, and descriptions.

2:15 a.m. — crying.

4:30 a.m. — bruise on left arm.

Tuesday — refused bottle.

Thursday — Daniel angry again.

I couldn’t breathe.

“Daniel?”

The investigator turned another page.

There were more entries.

He said nobody would believe me.

He said I was imagining things.

He said Paige was difficult because she was mine.

Then another line.

He hurt her again.

I stared at the handwriting.

It was Kate’s.

My sister had known.

She had been recording everything.

The makeup.

The photographs.

The injuries.

The notebook.

Suddenly, the pieces came together in a terrible way.

But one question remained.

“Why did she accuse me?”

The investigator looked toward the stairs.

“Maybe she was trying to protect someone.”

“Who?”

Before she could answer, footsteps came from upstairs.

We both froze.

An officer called out.

“Police! Identify yourself!”

Silence.

Then a man’s voice answered.

“I’m Daniel.”

My blood ran cold.

Daniel appeared at the top of the stairs.

He looked calm.

Too calm.

His eyes moved from the investigator to me.

Then they landed on the notebook in her hand.

His expression changed.

“You weren’t supposed to find that.”

The officer stepped between us.

Daniel backed away.

Then he ran.

Everything happened at once.

Officers chased him through the house.

The investigator grabbed my arm and moved me away from the stairs.

I heard shouting.

A door slammed.

Then silence.

Several minutes later, Daniel was brought back in handcuffs.

He looked directly at me.

“You ruined everything.”

Tears burned my eyes.

“You hurt her.”

He said nothing.

“You hurt a six-month-old baby.”

His jaw tightened.

Then he said something I would never forget.

“I didn’t hurt her as much as your sister says.”

The investigator stepped closer.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel looked down.

“She dropped the baby.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Kate dropped her.”

The room became silent.

“She dropped Paige months ago. That’s how the first fracture happened.”

The investigator’s expression hardened.

“And the recent injury?”

Daniel said nothing.

“Daniel.”

At last, he whispered:

“Kate did it.”

My heart broke.

Because I finally understood.

Kate hadn’t been lying about everything.

But she hadn’t told the entire truth either.

She had been frightened.

She had tried to document what was happening.

She had hidden the injuries because she believed Daniel would take Paige away if anyone discovered what was happening inside their home.

But when the newest injury happened, something inside her finally broke.

She panicked.

She covered the bruising.

She brought Paige to me.

And when I discovered the injury, she realized the truth was going to come out.

So she tried to make me responsible.

Not because she hated me.

Because she was terrified.

Later that night, I was finally allowed into Paige’s room.

She was sleeping.

Her tiny leg was immobilized.

A monitor beside her bed beeped softly.

I sat beside her and held her little hand.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

Her fingers weakly curled around mine.

I started crying.

“I should have noticed sooner.”

The nurse nearby gently shook her head.

“You did notice.”

I looked at her.

“You noticed when it mattered.”

I thought about what Kate had told me that morning.

You’re the one person I trust to make the call if she gets too fussy.

She hadn’t really been talking about teething.

She had been asking me to notice.

To see something she was too afraid to say out loud.

Several days later, investigators confirmed what had happened.

There had been earlier injuries.

There had been efforts to conceal them.

Kate and Daniel had given conflicting accounts.

The investigation continued, and the adults involved had to answer difficult questions about what they knew, what they did, and what they failed to do.

But Paige survived.

Weeks later, she came home.

Her leg healed.

Slowly.

Her smile returned.

And the first time I held her again, she wrapped both hands around my finger.

I cried so hard that Kate began crying too.

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

Finally, she whispered, “I’m sorry.”

I looked at her.

“You should have told me.”

“I was scared.”

“I know.”

She looked down at Paige.

“I thought if I told anyone, I’d lose her.”

I squeezed her hand.

“You almost lost her because you stayed silent.”

Kate closed her eyes.

“I know.”

That was the hardest truth of all.

It wasn’t the makeup.

It wasn’t the fracture.

It wasn’t even the lies.

The hardest truth was that fear had convinced my sister that hiding the problem was the same thing as protecting her daughter.

Sometimes, what appears to be protection from the outside can become another kind of danger.

I never learned exactly how long Kate had been planning to tell me.

Maybe that morning was the first time.

Maybe it wasn’t.

But I understood one thing.

When she told me I was the person she trusted to make the call, she had already made one herself.

She had left Paige with me.

She had hoped I would see what she couldn’t bring herself to say.

And I did.

I only wish she had understood that she never needed makeup to hide the truth from me.

She only needed to ask for help.

Because Paige’s tiny hand was still wrapped around my finger when I made myself a promise:

If that little girl ever needed someone to speak for her again, I would never wait for someone else to explain what I could already see.

And this time, I would make the call.

Before it was too late.
