My new neighbor treated my lawn as though it were her personal parking area and laughed whenever I complained. I decided to give her a small lesson, never realizing that the resentment she carried toward me had begun fifteen years earlier.

I had lived in that house for twenty-nine years, long enough to know which floorboard creaked during winter and which part of the garden received the first sunlight each spring.

Before Audrey moved in, my life was pleasantly predictable.

I had been in that house for twenty-nine years.

After my husband passed away, that familiar routine became even more meaningful to me.

Taking care of the house and garden kept my hands occupied whenever the rooms seemed too silent.

The house also held reminders of the life I had known before retirement. One wall of my study was covered with photographs from sporting competitions, along with old judging credentials, plaques, and more awards than I ever knew what to do with.

But my garden meant more to me.

For years, I had traveled from one event to another, spending weekends inside crowded arenas with score sheets in my hands. These days, I hardly gave any of that life a thought.

My garden meant more to me.

Every morning, I watered the hydrangeas, trimmed whatever needed attention, and checked on the roses my husband had planted along the fence.

These days, I hardly gave any of that life a thought.

Then Audrey moved into the house next door.

She looked no older than thirty, with shiny dark hair and the kind of energy that could make even unpacking moving boxes feel like a social occasion.

“You must be Helen,” she said when we introduced ourselves.

I smiled. “And you must be Audrey.”

“Have we met?”

For a moment, she simply looked at me.

“Have we met?” I eventually asked.

Her expression changed at once. “No. Sorry. You just look familiar.”

I didn’t think much more about it.

At first, Audrey seemed friendly enough.

Then her parties began.

“You just look familiar.”

On Friday nights, music came through my bedroom wall. Saturdays brought laughter, shouting, and the constant sound of car doors closing well after midnight.

I put up with that.

The parking was another matter.

One evening, I went outside and discovered a silver sedan with two wheels sitting directly on my grass.

I knocked on Audrey’s door.

I put up with that.

“Audrey, could you please ask your guests not to park on my property?”

“Oh!” She looked past me. “Sorry. I’ll tell them.”

The following weekend, muddy tire marks appeared across the same section of lawn.

A week later, two of my flowers had been crushed.

Then, one Sunday morning, I found a car blocking nearly half of my driveway.

“It’s very… traditional.”

Audrey came outside while I was looking over the damage.

She glanced toward the flower beds and smiled. “You really spend a lot of time taking care of this garden.”

“I enjoy it.”

“It’s very… traditional.”

I looked at her.

Audrey hardly knew me.

She shrugged. “I suppose when you have plenty of free time.”

Something about the way she said it bothered me.

It wasn’t the insult itself.

It was the satisfaction behind it.

Audrey barely knew me. So why did getting under my skin seem to please her so much?

The next weekend was even worse.

The next weekend was even worse.

By Sunday morning, another set of tire marks crossed my lawn, and three stems along the flower bed had been broken nearly down to the soil.

I found Audrey outside carrying empty bottles toward her recycling bin.

“Audrey, we need to talk.”

“Your guests drove across my lawn again.”

She sighed before I had even finished speaking.

“If this is about the cars again—”

“It is. Your guests drove over my lawn again.”

She looked toward the tire marks. “They’re only here for a few hours. Nobody is getting hurt.”

Something shifted in her expression.

“It is hurting my property, Audrey. I’ve asked you more than once.”

Her lips tightened.

Something shifted in her expression. “You really enjoy telling people what they can and cannot do, don’t you?”

The comment caught me by surprise.

“Everything has to happen exactly the way you want.”

“I’m asking people not to park on property that belongs to me.”

“Rules, boundaries, permission.” She laughed briefly. “Everything has to happen exactly the way you want.”

I stared at her. For someone I had only known for a few months, she sounded remarkably angry with me.

“All I want is some basic respect.”

Audrey looked me over.

I stared back.

Then she smiled. “What are you going to do, grandma?”

For some reason, those words affected me more than the insult itself. There was something about the way she said them that felt familiar.

I stood there trying to place the memory, but it disappeared before I could grasp it.

Audrey seemed almost satisfied with my silence. She turned around and went inside.

“What are you going to do, grandma?”

From that point on, whatever friendliness remained between us vanished.

She began leaving her car just inches from my driveway even when there was plenty of room elsewhere. Whenever her garbage bins somehow ended up on my side, I pushed them directly back.

Whenever she spotted me kneeling among the roses, she would call out, “Still working on your little museum?”

The following Saturday, Audrey’s guests were back on my lawn.

“Still working on your little museum?”

I spotted the first vehicle from my kitchen window. Ten minutes later, another arrived behind it, leaving two deep tire marks across the grass I had spent the entire week repairing.

I reached for my shoes.

Then I stopped.

I was tired of going to Audrey’s door only to watch her roll her eyes at me.

My eyes moved toward the sprinkler controls beside the back door.

I turned the dial.

My husband had installed the system years before, and the sprinkler heads along that side of the yard were still working perfectly.

I turned the dial.

Water sprayed across the lawn.

A woman wearing a blue dress had just stepped out of one of the cars when the first spray hit her legs.

She screamed and jumped backward.

Audrey appeared almost instantly.

“What the—?”

Another guest hurried toward Audrey’s porch but ended up soaked across the shoulders. Someone else shouted about her hair while three people rushed to move their vehicles.

I remained by my doorway, watching the sprinklers sweep peacefully from side to side.

Audrey appeared almost instantly.

“Is there a problem?”

“Helen!”

I stepped outside. “Is there a problem?”

“You’re spraying water on my guests!”

I looked toward the lawn. “I’m watering my grass.”

“At night?”

“It needs water at night too.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You did this because of the cars.”

“If your guests don’t want to get wet, they can keep their cars off my property.”

Audrey crossed her arms.

Behind her, the woman in blue hurried toward the house, carrying her shoes and complaining under her breath.

Audrey crossed her arms.

“So this is your big revenge?”

That made me smile. “You think you’re very important.”

Her expression hardened.

Her expression hardened.

Within a minute, the remaining vehicles had been moved away from my lawn.

I turned off the sprinklers and went back inside.

Audrey probably believed she had just seen the worst thing I was capable of.

She was wrong.

Then I noticed the paint cans.

Compared with what I had actually been thinking about, the sprinkler incident was hardly an inconvenience.

For the next few days, Audrey avoided me.

Then I noticed the paint cans.

She had moved much of the furniture from her porch and covered the steps with drop cloths. By lunchtime, the old cream-colored railings had been transformed into a bright, glossy white.

This mattered.

Apparently, she was preparing for another party.

This mattered.

Audrey cleaned the porch boards, polished the windows, changed the cushions on her outdoor chairs, and spent what seemed like forever arranging lanterns until everything looked exactly right.

I watched from my garden while pretending to remove dead flowers.

“Big improvement, don’t you think?”

She noticed me watching. “Big improvement, don’t you think?”

“It’s very white.”

“That’s the point.” She glanced toward my flower beds. “Some people prefer things a little more modern.”

I cut away a wilted flower. “Some of us prefer things that are alive.”

Her smile became thinner.

Her smile became thinner. “Your old-lady garden certainly is alive.”

I ignored her and reached for the watering can.

That was when a sparrow landed beside my shoe.

Another hopped beneath the feeder near the fence.

Then three more appeared in the maple tree above us.

A plan began to form.

I looked at the birds.

Then I looked at Audrey’s spotless white porch.

A plan began to form.

By the time Audrey left in her car that afternoon, I was already heading toward the shed.

I filled both bird feeders completely and scattered additional seed along my side of the garden, closest to her porch.

I was halfway through the bag when someone cleared her throat behind me.

Carol stood by the gate, looking at the birdseed.

“Helen.”

I turned. Carol was standing at the gate, staring at the seed.

Then she looked toward Audrey’s porch and back at me.

“That is an awful lot of birdseed.”

“Birds need to eat.”

“You’re planning something.”

Carol crossed her arms. “You’re planning something.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

The corner of her mouth moved.

Another idea suddenly came to me.

“Are you free tomorrow afternoon?”

Carol narrowed her eyes.

“That depends.”

“Tea. Three o’clock.”

Carol narrowed her eyes again. “Why?”

“Do I need a reason?”

Apparently, I didn’t.

“Are you free tomorrow afternoon?”

By dinner, I had invited Carol, Margaret, and Louise.

Each of them had complained about Audrey’s music, guests, or cars blocking the street. None of them knew why I had chosen that particular time.

For once, I was the one keeping something secret.

And surprisingly, I enjoyed it.

At three o’clock, Carol arrived first.

I enjoyed it more than I probably should have.

She took one look at the untouched birdseed beneath the feeders and raised an eyebrow.

“This is your grand plan?”

“Have some tea.”

Margaret and Louise arrived a few minutes later, and before long, the four of us were sitting around my garden table with tea, sandwiches, and absolutely nothing exciting happening.

Louise pointed toward the fence.

Across the fence, Audrey hurried back and forth between the house and porch, carrying flowers, wiping the railings, and rearranging decorations for what seemed like the tenth time.

I looked toward the maple tree.

Nothing.

Then Louise pointed toward the fence.

“Helen.”

Birds began dropping into the garden.

A sparrow landed beneath the feeder. Then another.

Within minutes, the branches above us were moving with birds. They pecked at the seed scattered near the boundary before flying back toward the trees.

Carol covered her mouth with her hand.

“Oh, this is terrible.”

Carol covered her mouth with her hand.

She was smiling as she said it.

The first white railing received a direct hit.

Then another.

Margaret nearly choked on her tea.

Before long, the once-perfect porch was anything but spotless.

I tried to remain dignified.

I failed.

Audrey stepped outside carrying a tray of glasses.

She stopped.

Carol suddenly became fascinated by her teacup.

For several seconds, Audrey simply stared.

Slowly, she lowered the tray.

Her eyes traveled across the railing, the steps, and the cushions.

Then she looked across the lawn.

Directly at me.

Carol suddenly became fascinated by her teacup.

Audrey placed the tray down so forcefully that one of the glasses tipped over.

Then she marched across the yard.

“Helen.”

“I fed them.”

I folded my hands in my lap. “Yes?”

She pointed toward the porch. “You did this.”

I looked at the birds. “I fed them.”

“You knew exactly what was going to happen!”

“I suspected.”

For one wonderful second, nobody at the table spoke.

For one wonderful second, nobody at the table spoke.

Audrey looked from me to the other women, and her expression changed.

It wasn’t only anger.

There was something older in it.

“You really enjoy doing this, don’t you?” she asked.

I frowned. “Doing what?”

Her eyes met mine.

Her eyes met mine. “Acting like you don’t know what you’ve done.”

“What exactly is that supposed to mean?” I asked.

Audrey laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“You always liked making people feel small.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Carol shifted in her chair.

I stood. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Of course you don’t. You never do. You make your decision, hide behind the rules, and everyone else has to deal with the consequences.”

That word again.

Rules.

I felt my confusion turning into irritation.

I felt my confusion turning into irritation.

“Audrey, either tell me what you mean or stop talking in riddles.”

She stared at me.

Then her expression changed.

“You really don’t remember me, do you?”

Something in her voice silenced everyone at the table.

I studied her face, but nothing came to mind.

I studied her face, but nothing came to mind.

“Regional Qualifier,” she said. “Fifteen years ago.”

The words reached me first.

Then came flashes.

Bright lights.

Score sheets.

Coaches crowded around the barriers.

My old judging badge clipped to my jacket.

Audrey stepped closer.

“People were saying I might actually have a future.”

“I was seventeen. People were saying I might actually have a future.”

And then I remembered the decision.

A technical violation.

An automatic penalty.

“You were that girl?”

Her jaw tightened.

“You disqualified me. I begged you afterward.”

Audrey’s voice became quieter.

The memory returned more slowly.

A teenage girl crying outside the judges’ room.

Me, exhausted after a full day of arguments and appeals.

Audrey’s voice became quieter.

“You looked at me and said, ‘What are you going to do, girl?’”

My stomach tightened.

“That’s why you said it.”

“Yes.”

Suddenly, everything she had said weeks earlier made sense.

What are you going to do, grandma?

“That’s why you said it.”

“Yes.”

I sank back against the table.

“The ruling was still correct.”

Audrey told me what happened afterward.

Her opportunity disappeared.

A sponsor lost interest.

Her coach began concentrating on another athlete.

She competed again, but without success, and eventually left the sport.

“I spent years believing that was when everything ended.”

I swallowed.

“The ruling was still correct.”

Audrey told me what happened afterward.

“I knew that would be your answer.”

“But what I said after the ruling wasn’t right.”

She looked away.

“You were seventeen. I treated you like another complaint I needed to dismiss. I shouldn’t have done that.”

Silence settled over the table.

Then another thought came to me.

“You knew who I was when you moved in?”

“You knew who I was when you moved in?”

Audrey nodded.

“At first, the parties were just parties. Then I realized how much the parking bothered you.”

“So you deliberately kept doing it.”

She didn’t answer.

Her silence was enough.

I pointed toward the damaged edge of my flower bed.

“Did that make you feel better?”

“Did that make you feel better?”

Audrey looked at the crushed flowers.

“No.”

I glanced toward her ruined white porch.

“Well, covering my yard with birdseed hasn’t exactly made me look mature either.”

“Covering my yard with birdseed hasn’t exactly made me look mature either.”

For the first time since she had approached us, Audrey almost smiled.

Not because everything was suddenly repaired.

But because neither of us could keep pretending that the argument had ever really been about parking.

Audrey turned toward her house.

“Wait.”

I looked back at her damaged white porch.

She stopped.

Fifteen years earlier, I had watched a crying seventeen-year-old walk away because I had been too exhausted and impatient to care about what happened after my decision.

I wasn’t going to make that mistake again.

I pulled out the empty chair beside me.

“Sit down.”

Audrey glanced at the other women, then at me.

After a moment, she sat.

“We both made a mess.”

“I’m sorry,” I said. “Not for the ruling itself. But for what I said afterward. You deserved better from me.”

She slowly nodded.

Margaret quietly poured her a cup of tea.

For a moment, none of us said anything.

Audrey looked toward her stained white porch.

I looked toward the damaged edge of my garden.

She sighed.

“Then I suppose we both know where to start.”

“We both made a mess.”

I picked up my cup.

Before Audrey moved in, my life was pleasantly…
