Roland stood in my kitchen reading it, and before he reached the end of the second paragraph, his hands had begun to tremble.

Odessa had not written the letter to blame him. That was the part none of us had expected. She explained that she knew about the twenty-three thousand dollars, that she had forgiven him for it years earlier, and that she had kept a written record of everything for one reason: if he ever tried to take control of her house—or her freedom—while claiming he was protecting her, those records would prevent him from doing it.

She told him that she loved him. She admitted that somewhere along the way, she had failed him in a way she could never quite explain. And she wrote that the most painful truth of her life was that her son came to see her for only four minutes each year, while the woman living next door quietly paid a bill that neither of them ever spoke about.

Then he reached the part about the will.

Odessa had left the house to Roland. Every bit of it. The very property he had come that morning determined to protect was already his, yet he had spent those same hours accusing the widow next door of taking something that belonged to him.

She left me nothing except the card table and the bowl of peppermints beside the door.

That was exactly the kind of gift she knew I would accept.

Roland lowered himself onto my kitchen floor. He was still dressed in his funeral suit, and he cried with the kind of grief people feel when the person they needed to apologize to is already gone.

There is something I never told him, or Desmond, or anyone else.

Odessa knew about the water bill.

Her letter made that clear.

But during the six years I paid it, she never once thanked me.

It was only after she died that I finally understood why.

If Odessa had thanked me, what I was doing might have turned into a debt. By saying nothing, she allowed it to remain what it had always been: a gift I could give her without taking away her pride.

She protected my dignity by acting as though she did not notice.

I protected hers by acting as though she did not know.

For six years, the two of us lived according to a quiet understanding that neither of us ever needed to say aloud.

Roland and I never became friends.

But these days, he cuts the grass strip between our houses, taking care of both sides. He leaves peppermints on my porch in a small dish, and neither of us has ever talked about why.

The water still runs in the house next door.

He kept the account under her name.

One day, I asked him why.

He simply said, “Some bills are worth paying just to see the name print out.”
