Then he paused.<\/p>\n

Now Ethan walked\u00a0into the shop\u00a0and climbed into\u00a0Marcus’s chair.<\/p>\n

Marcus\u00a0smiled at him\u00a0in the mirror.<\/p>\n

\u201cBack again, buddy?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ethan grinned.<\/p>\n

\u201cCheck both ears\u00a0this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marcus laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou got it. Both ears. Every\u00a0time. I’ll check\u00a0them until you’re\u00a0forty.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed too.<\/p>\n

My eyes stung\u00a0as I watched\u00a0my son\u00a0sitting there, completely\u00a0comfortable, completely\u00a0himself.<\/p>\n

Afterward, we went\u00a0home and opened\u00a0another box.<\/p>\n

For three years, I’d believed protecting\u00a0Ethan meant helping\u00a0him move forward\u00a0without\u00a0constantly living in\u00a0the shadow of\u00a0the father he’d\u00a0lost.<\/p>\n

I thought keeping\u00a0things light was\u00a0protecting him.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0was wrong.<\/p>\n

Ethan wasn’t trying\u00a0to live in\u00a0Ryan’s shadow.<\/p>\n

He was trying\u00a0to remember his\u00a0father’s face before\u00a0the memories\u00a0disappeared completely.<\/p>\n

He wasn’t drowning\u00a0in the past.<\/p>\n

He was reaching\u00a0for it.<\/p>\n

And Derek had\u00a0understood that hunger\u00a0before I did.<\/p>\n

He had found\u00a0the emptiness inside my\u00a0son and tried\u00a0to turn it\u00a0into a weapon.<\/p>\n

That’s the part\u00a0I still think\u00a0about sometimes.<\/p>\n

A stranger understood\u00a0my grieving child\u00a0better than I\u00a0had allowed myself\u00a0to.<\/p>\n

Derek will never\u00a0get another chance\u00a0to use that\u00a0against him.<\/p>\n

But the lesson\u00a0wasn’t really about\u00a0Derek.<\/p>\n

To the photographs.<\/p>\n

To the stories\u00a0I’ll keep telling\u00a0until Ethan can\u00a0tell them himself.<\/p>\n

I couldn’t give\u00a0my son his\u00a0father\u00a0back.<\/p>\n

But I could\u00a0make sure he\u00a0truly knows who\u00a0his father was.<\/p>\n
