I assumed he was simply trying to be nice—until one afternoon she said, “He says strawberry was your favorite too.” My stomach suddenly tightened. Strawberry shortcake had been my favorite when I was a child, but I had never told her that.

I asked Ellie how the man could possibly know. She insisted that she hadn’t told him anything. Even so, I warned her not to take anything from strangers unless I was there with her. A few days later, the familiar music from the ice cream truck came drifting down our street again. This time, I followed Ellie outside.

The driver was an older man with gray hair and glasses. The moment he saw me, his smile faded. Then, in a quiet voice, he said my first name. “Sarah?” I froze. I had never met him—or at least, that’s what I thought. When I asked him how he knew who I was, he asked, “You really don’t recognize me?”

He reached underneath the counter and pulled out an old photograph. It showed me as a little girl standing beside an ice cream truck, holding a strawberry shortcake bar. A young man was standing beside me. I stared at his face for a moment before I suddenly recognized him.

“Ben?”

He gave me a sad smile. Ben had been my older brother Adam’s best friend. Adam was ten years older than me and had died in a car accident when I was nine. After that, my family moved away, and the memories from those years gradually faded.

Ben explained that my mother had once asked him to watch over me. On the back of the photograph, she had written five words: “Keep an eye on her.” Whenever he drove his ice cream truck through our neighborhood, he remembered me and would sometimes give me my favorite treat.

I looked over at Ellie and realized that I had spent years avoiding stories about Adam because remembering him was painful. Ben hadn’t simply remembered which ice cream I loved. He had remembered my brother, my childhood, and a promise my mother had made many years ago.

That evening, Ellie and I sat together on the steps, eating strawberry shortcake bars. She asked me about Adam, and for the first time, I told her everything. I finally understood that remembering someone doesn’t leave them trapped in the past—it keeps their love alive. And sometimes, the people we believed we’d forgotten are simply waiting for the right moment to help us remember who we once were.

For weeks, my daughter Ellie kept coming home with free ice cream from a man I had never met.
