Things are going to be different now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I slowly placed my fork on the table.<\/p>\n<p>The china made a quiet click against my plate.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at me, clearly expecting an argument.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Not because her words didn&#8217;t hurt.<\/p>\n<p>They did.<\/p>\n<p>This was the same dining room where Edward had celebrated every birthday since he was five years old.<\/p>\n<p>The same oak table where I had helped him with science projects, college applications, and the paperwork for his first job.<\/p>\n<p>Every room in this house held memories of sacrifices he would probably never fully understand.<\/p>\n<p>After my husband died twenty years ago, I worked two jobs just to keep this home.<\/p>\n<p>I refinanced the mortgage.<\/p>\n<p>I gave up vacations.<\/p>\n<p>More than once, I sold my jewelry to help cover tuition.<\/p>\n<p>When Edward graduated from engineering school without owing a dollar, I believed every sacrifice had been worth it.<\/p>\n<p>Never once had I imagined that someone would eventually stand in my own home and tell me I no longer belonged there.<\/p>\n<p>Linda mistook my quietness for weakness.<\/p>\n<p>She reached across the table and lifted the serving bowl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom now on, I&#8217;ll decide where everyone sits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martha looked at me with concern.<\/p>\n<p>Edward kept his eyes fixed on the tablecloth.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of them realized that I had already made my decision.<\/p>\n<p>Without raising my voice, I stood, picked up my dinner plate, and walked toward the kitchen counter.<\/p>\n<p>Linda gave me a satisfied smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew you&#8217;d understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh,\u201d I said calmly, \u201cI understand perfectly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I placed the plate down, reached into my purse, and pulled out my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Linda folded her arms again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalling someone to complain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I unlocked my phone and selected a contact I hadn&#8217;t needed in years.<\/p>\n<p>The call connected after two rings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood evening,\u201d I said pleasantly. \u201cThis is Margaret Collins. I&#8217;d like to begin the paperwork we discussed concerning my property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attorney recognized my voice immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Collins, are you ready to proceed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced back toward the dining room.<\/p>\n<p>Linda&#8217;s confident smile was beginning to disappear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe it&#8217;s time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attorney continued, \u201cVery well.
