They had struggled over finances, their plans for the future, and the kind of life each of them wanted. She had already moved on with her life and didn’t want old conflicts to continue controlling her family.<\/p>\n

For years, he had carried the memory of his daughter’s suffering with him. He had never really allowed himself to recognize that Emily had healed and continued living her life.<\/p>\n

Not revenge.<\/p>\n
Jason apologized without demanding forgiveness in return. He understood that accepting responsibility was important, even though there was no way to undo what had happened years earlier.<\/p>\n
I told both of them that I wasn’t going to take sides.<\/p>\n
I could love my son while still expecting him to accept responsibility for his mistakes. And I could love Richard without dismissing the feelings and experiences of his daughter.<\/p>\n
Eventually, Richard and I chose to continue our relationship, although we decided to move forward more carefully.<\/p>\n
That experience taught both of us something important: love cannot survive when it is built on assumptions, resentment, or wounds from the past.<\/p>\n
People make mistakes.<\/p>\n
But people can also change, learn, and grow.<\/p>\n
