The little girl’s face was pale, but she refused to cry anymore. She kept looking over her shoulder at Nathan.

Not Dominic.

Nathan.

That detail lodged itself in my mind.

Children didn’t understand syndicates, offshore accounts, security logs, or falsified inventory reports.

But they understood fear.

And Harper was terrified of Nathan.

The study doors slammed shut behind Dominic.

Nathan stood outside with four armed guards surrounding him.

For the first time since I’d known him, he looked small.

Then Claire Vale arrived.

She swept into the corridor wearing a cream-colored cashmere coat, her blond hair perfectly arranged despite the chaos around her.

Dominic’s fiancée.

The woman everyone in the estate treated like royalty.

She glanced at Nathan.

Then at the cellar doors.

Then at me.

Something flickered across her face.

Recognition.

Fear.

It disappeared almost immediately.

“Where is Dominic?” she asked.

“In the study,” one of the guards replied.

“With Mia?”

“No.”

Claire exhaled slowly.

“Good.”

I heard the word.

Good.

Not Is Mia alive?

Not What happened to her?

Good.

I stared at Claire.

She noticed.

Our eyes met.

Her expression closed.

I looked at Nathan.

He was watching me.

This time, there was no warning in his eyes.

There was hatred.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then thirty.

The medical team worked on Mia while Harper sat beside her bed, holding her mother’s hand.

I stood outside the room.

Through the glass, I watched a doctor clean the wounds around Mia’s wrists.

“She’s severely dehydrated,” the doctor said when he stepped out. “But she’ll survive.”

“And Harper?”

“Physically, she’s fine.”

He hesitated.

“Psychologically, that’s another matter.”

I nodded.

Then I noticed something.

The silver bird pendant.

It was still around Mia’s neck.

The chain was broken.

But the pendant itself was scratched.

Deeply.

Like someone had tried to pry it open.

I entered the room.

Mia looked at me.

Her eyes were tired.

But sharp.

“You work for Dominic.”

It wasn’t a question.

“Yes.”

She glanced toward Harper.

“Then you need to listen to me.”

I pulled a chair closer.

“What happened?”

Mia’s fingers tightened around the blanket.

“Nathan.”

My stomach dropped.

“I know.”

“No.”

Her voice became urgent.

“You don’t know.”

She looked toward the door.

“That basement wasn’t where he first took me.”

I leaned forward.

“Where was it?”

Mia swallowed.

“Under the chapel.”

I froze.

There was an old stone chapel on the eastern edge of the property.

It hadn’t been used in decades.

Nobody was allowed inside.

Dominic had always said the structure was unsafe.

Mia continued.

“There is another room beneath it.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Nathan took me there.”

My pulse quickened.

“What was in the room?”

Mia looked at me.

“Files.”

“What kind?”

“People.”

I didn’t understand.

She reached for her pendant.

Her trembling fingers pressed against the silver bird.

“It opens.”

I stared at it.

“The pendant?”

She nodded.

“Nathan thought Dominic had the key.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But Dominic never had it.”

“Then who does?”

Mia looked toward Harper.

“My daughter.”

I turned.

Harper was asleep.

“Why would a child have a key?”

“Because her father gave it to her.”

I went completely still.

“Harper’s father?”

Mia closed her eyes.

“Daniel Carter.”

I knew the name.

Everyone in the organization did.

Daniel Carter had been one of Dominic’s most trusted lieutenants.

He had supposedly died in a car explosion three years earlier.

The official story was that he’d betrayed Dominic.

The truth had never been discussed.

I looked at Mia.

“You’re saying Daniel is alive?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I’m saying he knew this would happen.”

Before I could ask another question, footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Mia’s eyes widened.

“Hide.”

“What?”

“Now.”

The door handle moved.

I slipped behind the medical cabinet just as the door opened.

Nathan walked in.

He had changed.

The calm second-in-command was gone.

His face was expressionless.

Cold.

He looked at Mia.

Then at Harper.

“Where is the pendant?”

Mia said nothing.

Nathan stepped closer.

“I know you gave it to the girl.”

Still nothing.

He crouched beside Harper.

Mia immediately sat up.

“Don’t touch her.”

Nathan smiled.

“That’s the first intelligent thing you’ve said all night.”

He reached toward Harper’s neck.

I moved before I could think.

I stepped out from behind the cabinet.

“Looking for something?”

Nathan slowly turned.

His eyes widened.

Then narrowed.

“You.”

“Me.”

He stood.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then Nathan smiled.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.”

“I’ve got a pretty good idea.”

He glanced toward the hallway.

“You should have stayed silent.”

“Probably.”

I drew my weapon.

Nathan didn’t.

Instead, he reached into his coat and placed something on the medical table.

A photograph.

I looked down.

My blood went cold.

It showed Dominic Vale standing beside a grave.

And beside him stood Daniel Carter.

Alive.

Very much alive.

On the back of the photograph were six handwritten words:

THE TRAITOR ISN’T WHO YOU THINK.

I looked up.

Nathan was gone.

I ran.

By the time I reached the study, the door was open.

Dominic stood behind his desk.

Claire was nowhere in sight.

“Where’s Nathan?”

Dominic’s expression didn’t change.

“Escaped.”

My heart sank.

“How?”

“Someone opened the eastern gate.”

I stared at him.

“Who?”

Dominic slowly raised his eyes.

“Claire.”

Silence.

Then he walked around the desk.

“Tell me everything.”

I handed him the photograph.

He looked at it.

For the first time that night, Dominic Vale looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Afraid.

He turned the photograph over.

Read the message.

Then crushed it in his fist.

“Where did you get this?”

“Nathan left it for me.”

Dominic stared toward the windows.

“The bastard.”

“What does it mean?”

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked to a hidden panel beside the fireplace.

Pressed his palm against it.

A section of wood clicked.

A narrow compartment opened.

Inside was a small black box.

Dominic removed it.

“This belonged to Daniel Carter.”

He placed it on the desk.

“I thought it was destroyed.”

“What is it?”

Dominic looked at me.

“The reason people have been dying around me for three years.”

He opened the box.

Inside was a single USB drive.

And beneath it, a folded piece of paper.

Dominic unfolded it.

His face changed.

“What?”

He handed me the paper.

There was one sentence.

Dominic—if you are reading this, Claire has already betrayed you.

I looked at him.

“Your fiancée?”

Dominic didn’t respond.

He picked up the USB drive.

Then the lights went out.

Every light in the mansion.

The emergency alarms remained silent.

Outside, the snow-covered estate disappeared into darkness.

A gunshot cracked somewhere upstairs.

Then another.

Harper screamed.

Dominic immediately reached for his weapon.

“Daniel!”

I ran for the door.

Dominic grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.”

“Harper is upstairs.”

His grip tightened.

“That’s exactly where they want you to go.”

Another gunshot echoed through the mansion.

Then a man’s voice came over the emergency intercom.

Calm.

Almost amused.

“Good evening, Dominic.”

Dominic went completely still.

The voice continued.

“You’ve spent three years hunting a ghost.”

A pause.

“Tonight, the ghost came home.”

I looked at Dominic.

He whispered one name.

“Daniel.”

Then the intercom crackled again.

“Come to the chapel, brother.”

Dominic’s face went white.

“Or the girl dies.”

The line went
