That&#8217;s either the bravest thing I&#8217;ve seen all year or the craziest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A tiny smile appeared on Ruth&#8217;s face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The men laughed.<\/p>\n<p>The tension broke.<\/p>\n<p>The bald biker extended his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName&#8217;s Frank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed toward the bearded man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s Duke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The youngest raised his burger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m Tommy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fourth biker, who had remained silent, simply nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank looked at Ruth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, Mom\u2026 when are these people coming?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo o&#8217;clock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank glanced at the clock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we&#8217;ve got an hour and twenty minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tommy swallowed the last bite of his burger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlenty of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d Ruth asked.<\/p>\n<p>Frank smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo make sure your new sons look convincing.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>At one forty-five, four motorcycles rolled into Ruth&#8217;s neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth sat in the passenger seat of Frank&#8217;s truck, staring through the window at her little blue house.<\/p>\n<p>Her husband&#8217;s flower beds were still there.<\/p>\n<p>The wooden swing he&#8217;d built for her still hung from the porch.<\/p>\n<p>But parked across the street were two black SUVs.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth&#8217;s hands trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#8217;re here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou scared?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing scared means you understand what&#8217;s happening. Courage means you go anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth took a deep breath.<\/p>\n<p>Then she opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>The men stepped out behind her.<\/p>\n<p>The driveway suddenly looked very small.<\/p>\n<p>A sharply dressed man approached them, holding a folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Miller?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Charles Benton. I&#8217;m representing Miller Creek Properties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFunny. Her name is Miller too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benton frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis doesn&#8217;t concern you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, it concerns us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Duke cracked his knuckles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benton looked at the four bikers, then back at Ruth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Miller, according to these documents, you&#8217;ve sold the property and agreed to vacate today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth&#8217;s voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never signed anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benton opened the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour signature is right here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He held up a page.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>The signature looked like hers.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ray stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have the original?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benton hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNotarized copy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s not necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray smiled.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t a friendly smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s not what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benton&#8217;s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou people have no authority here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank pulled out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He tapped the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut someone else does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A voice came through the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello, Mr. Benton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benton froze.<\/p>\n<p>The color drained from his face.<\/p>\n<p>It was a woman&#8217;s voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve been listening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray held the phone higher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sister is an attorney,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe looked up the property records this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Benton, the document you&#8217;re presenting contains a notarization from a notary who died six months before the alleged signing date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Benton looked down at the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#8217;re mistaken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d the lawyer replied. \u201cYou&#8217;re committing fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benton&#8217;s face went pale.<\/p>\n<p>Frank stepped toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd there&#8217;s one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He held up another sheet of paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis property has been in Ruth Miller&#8217;s family for forty-eight years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benton stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you get that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tommy smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s what sons are good for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled with tears again.<\/p>\n<p>But this time she was smiling.<\/p>\n<p>Then sirens sounded at the end of the street.<\/p>\n<p>Two police cars pulled into the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>Benton immediately stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>A police officer approached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Benton?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need you to come with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven&#8217;t done anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer looked at the papers in his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s not what our investigation says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benton turned toward Ruth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what you&#8217;ve gotten yourself into.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth stood straighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the four bikers beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve gotten myself four sons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tommy laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Duke put an arm around her shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>Frank shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>Ray simply smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Benton was led away.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, Ruth stood silently in her driveway.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at the men.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you really help me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother raised me to help people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Duke nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandmother was tough as nails. Reminds me of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tommy looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom passed away when I was twelve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth reached for his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Ray.<\/p>\n<p>He stared toward the blue house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father abandoned my family when I was young.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess I never liked seeing people lose their homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth squeezed his hand.<\/p>\n<p>Then she did something none of them expected.<\/p>\n<p>She hugged all four men.<\/p>\n<p>They stood awkwardly for a second.<\/p>\n<p>Then Frank wrapped his arms around everyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGroup hug, boys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#8217;t call it that,\u201d Tommy complained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#8217;re ruining the moment,\u201d Duke said.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth laughed.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time in months, the little blue house felt full again.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Three weeks later, a package arrived at the clubhouse.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were four handwritten letters.<\/p>\n<p>Each one began with the same words:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dear Son,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Frank read his letter twice.<\/p>\n<p>Duke wiped his eyes and pretended he had something in them.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy refused to admit he was crying.<\/p>\n<p>Ray folded his letter carefully and placed it inside his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>There was also a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth stood on her porch between the four bikers.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, she&#8217;d written:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cFamily isn&#8217;t always the people you&#8217;re born to.
