For twenty-two years, my husband had always been the kind of man who left the house before eight every morning, a travel mug in one hand and his company phone in the other.<\/p>\n
Seeing him sitting at home in the middle of a weekday felt strange enough that I stopped in the doorway.<\/p>\n

That word stayed in my head.<\/p>\n
Because it told me he had been thinking about numbers I had never even tried to calculate.<\/p>\n
Dad and I had never talked about his estate. Walter Hail could spend twenty minutes complaining about the price of furnace filters, then immediately change the subject if anyone asked him about his investments.<\/p>\n
I knew he was comfortable.<\/p>\n
