I was impatient to get home.<\/p>\n

Then I noticed the little girl standing in front of the register.<\/p>\n

She looked about eleven or twelve. She was holding a small birthday cake decorated with blue frosting and tiny white flowers. She kept looking down at the money in her hand, counting it over and over.<\/p>\n

The cashier told her the total.<\/p>\n

The girl counted her bills again.<\/p>\n

Then her coins.<\/p>\n

Her face slowly fell.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d she whispered. \u201cI thought I had enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou’re welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

She started walking away, but then stopped.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I ask you something?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy did you do that?\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause everyone deserves a birthday cake.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked down at the blue frosting.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s for my mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her voice changed when she said it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it her birthday?\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s sick.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn’t ask what kind of illness she had. Something told me she didn’t want to explain.<\/p>\n

Instead, I said, \u201cThen I hope you two have a wonderful birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe’ll be happy,\u201d the girl whispered.<\/p>\n

Then she ran toward the exit.<\/p>\n

I finished my shopping and eventually walked outside.<\/p>\n

I was halfway across the parking lot when I saw the girl again.<\/p>\n

She was standing beside an old silver sedan.<\/p>\n

An exhausted-looking woman sat in the passenger seat.<\/p>\n

The girl carefully climbed into the car and placed the cake on her mother’s lap.<\/p>\n

The woman looked confused at first.<\/p>\n

Then her daughter pointed toward me.<\/p>\n

The woman looked through the windshield.<\/p>\n

Our eyes met.<\/p>\n

She smiled and raised her hand.<\/p>\n

I waved back.<\/p>\n

Then she pressed her hand against her heart.<\/p>\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n

The car slowly pulled away.<\/p>\n

I stood there watching until it disappeared around the corner.<\/p>\n

You don’t need to understand everything someone is going through before deciding to make their day slightly easier.<\/p>\n

Several months passed.<\/p>\n

I eventually forgot about the girl’s face, although I never forgot the note.<\/p>\n

Then, one Saturday morning, I was shopping in the same store when a young woman approached me.<\/p>\n

I turned around.<\/p>\n

She looked familiar.<\/p>\n

Very familiar.<\/p>\n

Then I recognized her.<\/p>\n

It was the little girl.<\/p>\n

She reached into her purse and pulled something out.<\/p>\n

It was another piece of paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom wanted you to have this.\u201d<\/p>\n

I opened it.<\/p>\n

It was a photograph.<\/p>\n

Her mother was sitting at a kitchen table.<\/p>\n

The blue birthday cake was in front of her.<\/p>\n

She was smiling.<\/p>\n

A handwritten message was written on the back:<\/p>\n

That $4.17 gave me one of my happiest evenings that year. Thank you.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I looked up.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow is your mom?\u201d<\/p>\n

The girl’s smile became softer.<\/p>\n

Sometimes it takes a smile, a kind word, or simply noticing that someone is struggling.<\/p>\n

We rarely get to see where our small acts eventually lead.<\/p>\n

But that doesn’t make them any less meaningful.<\/p>\n

I still keep both notes in my wallet.<\/p>\n

Whenever I see them, I remember that little girl standing at the checkout counter, trying not to cry.<\/p>\n

And I remind myself of something I never want to forget:<\/p>\n
