He stared at me.<\/p>\n

His mouth opened.<\/p>\n

Gavin’s expression changed.<\/p>\n

He suddenly understood.<\/p>\n

For six months, Ms. Darlene had been paying his $80 monthly landscaping bill.<\/p>\n

After the hurricane, people had started helping one another.<\/p>\n

A retired firefighter repaired fences.<\/p>\n

Someone organized a cleanup crew for elderly residents.<\/p>\n

But Gavin had done something different.<\/p>\n

The entire street seemed to become silent.<\/p>\n

He transferred the money.<\/p>\n

Ms. Darlene checked her account.<\/p>\n

Then she smiled.<\/p>\n

Gavin looked almost embarrassed.<\/p>\n

But I wasn’t finished.<\/p>\n

I handed him a folder.<\/p>\n

He stared at it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour receipts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inside were copies of every landscaping payment Ms. Darlene had made.<\/p>\n

Six months.<\/p>\n

$480.<\/p>\n

I had also included photographs of her damaged property, copies of the messages she had sent asking him to reimburse her, and screenshots showing that he had ignored them.<\/p>\n

His expression changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy did you collect all this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you told me you didn’t have time to deal with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at the papers.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou’ve been keeping records?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pointed toward the neighbors.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several people nodded.<\/p>\n

Gavin looked around.<\/p>\n

For the first time, he realized this wasn’t one person confronting him.<\/p>\n
