When my neighbor knocked on my door, she was carrying a large paper bag.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere,\u201d she said with a smile. \u201cWe have too many.\u201d<\/p>\n

I thanked her and accepted it.<\/p>\n

Then I looked inside.<\/p>\n

I had absolutely no idea what I was looking at.<\/p>\n

The bag was filled with strange green vegetables I’d never seen before. They were knobby, slightly curved, and covered with little bumps.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you!\u201d I said, trying not to sound confused.<\/p>\n

She smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust cook them!\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she walked away.<\/p>\n

I stood in my kitchen staring into the bag.<\/p>\n

My first thought was that they looked like something from an alien garden.<\/p>\n

I picked one up.<\/p>\n

It was firm, cool, and heavier than I expected.<\/p>\n

I searched my memory for anything similar.<\/p>\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n

I considered calling my neighbor immediately, but I felt silly admitting that I didn’t know what she’d given me.<\/p>\n

So I put the bag on the counter.<\/p>\n

And there it stayed.<\/p>\n

For three days.<\/p>\n

Finally, I decided enough was enough.<\/p>\n

I walked next door and knocked.<\/p>\n

My neighbor opened the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

I held up one of the vegetables.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a confession.\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don’t know what these are.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed even harder.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey’re chayote!\u201d<\/p>\n

Apparently, she’d grown them in her backyard.<\/p>\n

She explained that chayote is a type of squash commonly used in many Latin American and Asian cuisines.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can cook them several ways,\u201d she told me. \u201cThey’re very easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

She showed me how she prepared them.<\/p>\n

First, she washed them thoroughly.<\/p>\n

Then she cut them in half and removed the central seed.<\/p>\n

She sliced the flesh into thin pieces.<\/p>\n

She heated a pan with a little olive oil, added garlic and onion, and tossed in the slices.<\/p>\n

A little salt.<\/p>\n

A little pepper.<\/p>\n

Then she covered the pan and let everything soften.<\/p>\n

Within minutes, the kitchen smelled incredible.<\/p>\n

I tasted a piece.<\/p>\n

It was mild, crisp, and slightly sweet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s it?\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I couldn’t believe I’d spent three days staring at them.<\/p>\n

That evening, I cooked the rest.<\/p>\n

I roasted some with olive oil and herbs.<\/p>\n

I added others to soup.<\/p>\n

I even chopped a few into a stir-fry.<\/p>\n

They worked beautifully.<\/p>\n

But the best part wasn’t discovering a new vegetable.<\/p>\n

It was realizing how easily embarrassment had stopped me from learning something simple.<\/p>\n

The next morning, I knocked on my neighbor’s door with a container of the roasted chayote.<\/p>\n

She smiled when she saw it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou liked them?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew you would.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that’s when I realized the bag wasn’t really just a bag of vegetables.<\/p>\n

It was an invitation.<\/p>\n

An invitation to ask questions.<\/p>\n

To share food.<\/p>\n

To learn something unfamiliar.<\/p>\n

And maybe to become a little less afraid of saying:<\/p>\n
