The photographer lowered her camera.<\/p>\n

Our three daughters looked at their father, waiting for him to celebrate.<\/p>\n

I smiled nervously.<\/p>\n

\u201cWesley?\u201d<\/p>\n

He finally looked up.<\/p>\n

His face had gone completely pale.<\/p>\n

Then he whispered:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere did you get that?\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed uncertainly.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the baby store. I told you\u2014we’re having a boy.\u201d<\/p>\n

He shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. I mean\u2026 who told you?\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked toward the photographer.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan we have a minute?\u201d<\/p>\n

She immediately understood.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n

She gathered her equipment and quietly led our daughters into the hallway.<\/p>\n

The moment the door closed, Wesley looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow far along are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTwenty-four weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sat down.<\/p>\n

I had never seen him look frightened by good news before.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

He rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to tell you something before you get any further into this pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart began pounding.<\/p>\n

He stared at the tiny blue shirt.<\/p>\n

Then he said something I never expected.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve known for almost six months that I might not be the father.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everything inside me went cold.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

He immediately stood.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn’t cheat on you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen what are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

He reached into his wallet and pulled out a folded piece of paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a test done.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cA paternity test?\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut why would you do that?\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause something happened before we got pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n

I couldn’t breathe.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

He sat back down.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you remember last summer when I went to Denver for that conference?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou remember I came home early?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn’t come home because the conference ended.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mind raced through old memories.<\/p>\n

The missed calls.<\/p>\n

The strange hotel receipt.<\/p>\n

The night he’d barely spoken to me.<\/p>\n

I had assumed he was exhausted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why did you come home?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I received a message from a woman I’d never heard of.\u201d<\/p>\n

My hands began shaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat woman?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHer name is Rebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n

The name meant nothing to me.<\/p>\n

Wesley continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said she had information about my family. Specifically, my father.\u201d<\/p>\n

His father’s watch.<\/p>\n

The one he’d always talked about.<\/p>\n

The one he’d planned to give our son.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does your father have to do with this?\u201d<\/p>\n

Wesley looked toward the closed door.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything.\u201d<\/p>\n

He unfolded the paper.<\/p>\n

It wasn’t a paternity test.<\/p>\n

It was an old birth certificate.<\/p>\n

And at the bottom was a name I recognized.<\/p>\n

My own.<\/p>\n

I stared at it.<\/p>\n

Then at Wesley.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

He whispered:<\/p>\n

\u201cRebecca is my father’s daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe says my father had another family before he met my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at the certificate again.<\/p>\n

The name wasn’t mine.<\/p>\n

But the address was.<\/p>\n

My childhood address.<\/p>\n

The house where I had grown up.<\/p>\n

I looked at Wesley in horror.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat can’t be possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

He shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy is my name on this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause that’s what I was trying to figure out.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pulled another document from his wallet.<\/p>\n

This one was older.<\/p>\n

Much older.<\/p>\n

It was a hospital record.<\/p>\n

My mother’s name was listed.<\/p>\n

My father’s name was listed.<\/p>\n

And beside them was a note I’d never seen before.<\/p>\n

Infant transferred to alternate family placement.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I couldn’t speak.<\/p>\n

Wesley reached for my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cI found out that your mother had given birth to twins.\u201d<\/p>\n

My entire body went numb.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was an only child.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut apparently, you weren’t.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room seemed to tilt.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened to the other baby?\u201d<\/p>\n

Wesley swallowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was adopted.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn’t answer.<\/p>\n

He didn’t have to.<\/p>\n

I already knew.<\/p>\n

The surname on the adoption document was the same surname as Wesley’s father.<\/p>\n

For nine years, I had believed I married the man I loved.<\/p>\n

Now I was staring at evidence that our families had been connected long before we ever met.<\/p>\n

And suddenly I understood why Wesley had looked terrified when he saw the blue baby outfit.<\/p>\n

He wasn’t afraid of becoming a father.<\/p>\n

He was afraid of something much bigger.<\/p>\n

\u201cWesley,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

He squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe baby isn’t the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen what is?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked directly into my eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe woman who gave me those documents says she knows why your sister was given away.\u201d<\/p>\n

I felt a chill.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy sister?\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe says your mother didn’t give her away because she couldn’t keep two children.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n

Wesley hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause someone threatened her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked down at the old hospital record.<\/p>\n

Then quietly said:<\/p>\n

\u201cMy father.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pulled my hand away.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know how it sounds.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You’re wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish I were.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood and walked toward the window.<\/p>\n

Outside, our three daughters were laughing with the photographer.<\/p>\n

They had no idea their entire family history had just shifted beneath our feet.<\/p>\n

Then Wesley said something that made me turn around.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere’s one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe woman who contacted me isn’t just your sister.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked terrified now.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe has been searching for you for thirty years.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

Wesley slowly pulled out his phone.<\/p>\n

There was one photograph on the screen.<\/p>\n

A woman standing beside a lake.<\/p>\n

She had my eyes.<\/p>\n

My mother’s smile.<\/p>\n

And the same small birthmark beneath her left ear.<\/p>\n

Underneath the photograph was a message.<\/p>\n

Tell Mary I’m sorry. I finally found the truth.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I looked at Wesley.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho sent that?\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn’t answer.<\/p>\n

My phone began ringing.<\/p>\n

Unknown number.<\/p>\n

I stared at the screen.<\/p>\n

Then I answered.<\/p>\n

A woman’s voice whispered:<\/p>\n
