Loaned money I couldn’t afford to lose.<\/p>\n

Told myself their busy lives were the reason they rarely visited.<\/p>\n

Malcolm didn’t answer immediately.<\/p>\n

He handed me another page.<\/p>\n

There it was.<\/p>\n

My signature.<\/p>\n

Except I knew immediately it wasn’t mine.<\/p>\n

The letters looked close, but the final curve of my name was wrong.<\/p>\n

Someone had copied it.<\/p>\n

I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n

For years, I’d wondered whether I was simply being too sensitive when my children asked about my money.<\/p>\n

Now the pieces were finally connecting.<\/p>\n

They weren’t worried about me.<\/p>\n

They were preparing for what they thought would happen after I became vulnerable.<\/p>\n

A knock sounded at the door.<\/p>\n

Malcolm quickly gathered the papers.<\/p>\n

I almost laughed.<\/p>\n

It was strange how quickly the explanation sounded different now.<\/p>\n

David’s face tightened.<\/p>\n

Sarah’s face went pale.<\/p>\n

Sarah started crying.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, that’s not fair.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou took money from me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was going to pay it back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked down.<\/p>\n

Michael finally spoke.<\/p>\n

I nodded slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I looked at all three of them.<\/p>\n

I pointed toward the papers.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlanning to take control of my life is a decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody said anything.<\/p>\n

Malcolm stepped forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ll give you both time and privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

I reached for his hand.<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n

My children watched as he pulled a chair beside my bed.<\/p>\n

He never brought flowers.<\/p>\n

Sometimes he brought old stories from Franklin Elementary and reminded me about children I had completely forgotten.<\/p>\n

And most importantly, I chose someone I trusted to help me\u2014not someone who simply shared my last name.<\/p>\n

Three months later, I returned home.<\/p>\n

There was a package waiting on my porch.<\/p>\n

Inside was a small wooden box.<\/p>\n

A note rested on top.<\/p>\n

For the woman who bought me lunch when I couldn’t afford it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Inside the box was the original lunch card Malcolm had shown me.<\/p>\n

Beside it was a photograph of a little boy sitting alone at a cafeteria table.<\/p>\n

I barely recognized him.<\/p>\n
