Mr. Kent looked at him calmly.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is being repaid.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n

The accountant opened another folder.<\/p>\n

\u201cMedical expenses, treatment travel, private nursing care, medication, transportation, and other costs Gwen personally covered during Walter\u2019s illness.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room went silent.<\/p>\n

Adam stared at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou paid for all that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI paid for what he needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou had Dad\u2019s money available.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot always when he needed something immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was the truth.<\/p>\n

Walter had money, but much of it was tied up in businesses, investments, property, and trusts.<\/p>\n

Illness didn’t wait for paperwork.<\/p>\n

When Walter needed a night nurse, I paid.<\/p>\n

When insurance delayed treatment-related expenses, I paid.<\/p>\n

When he needed a medical recliner, I paid.<\/p>\n

When we had to stay near the treatment center, I paid.<\/p>\n

I never told him the full amount because I didn’t want him feeling like a burden.<\/p>\n

But Walter knew more than I realized.<\/p>\n

He had been watching.<\/p>\n

I had married Walter when I was thirty and he was fifty-four.<\/p>\n

His children were already adults, and from the beginning, they decided I had an ulterior motive.<\/p>\n

At our first Thanksgiving together, Madison moved a silver serving tray away from me.<\/p>\n

\u201cHire another nurse with Dad’s money.\u201d<\/p>\n

I paid for the nurse myself.<\/p>\n

Later, when Walter saw me crying in the hallway, he reached for my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou lie kindly,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

I froze.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know what you do for me, Gwen.\u201d<\/p>\n

I thought that was enough.<\/p>\n

It wasn’t.<\/p>\n

Walter died just before sunrise on a Sunday.<\/p>\n

At his funeral, I overheard Madison telling someone that I had \u201cplayed nurse for sixteen years.\u201d<\/p>\n

That sentence finally broke something inside me.<\/p>\n

The next morning, I went to Mr. Kent’s office determined to stop defending myself.<\/p>\n

After the will was read, he handed me Walter’s envelope.<\/p>\n

I opened it.<\/p>\n

Inside was a letter.<\/p>\n

I recognized his handwriting immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy Gwen,\u201d it began. \u201cIf you’re reading this, then I’m gone, and my children have probably mistaken your silence for guilt.\u201d<\/p>\n

My eyes filled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am sorry. I should have stopped their cruelty sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n

I kept reading.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were never in my life for money. You were in it for the early mornings, the medicine, the bad days, and the parts of illness no one claps for.\u201d<\/p>\n

My hands began to shake.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou let me feel like a husband when illness made me feel like a burden. I saw everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Across the table, Madison lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n

Walter continued:<\/p>\n

\u201cI left my fortune to my children because they are my children. But I am paying my debt to my wife because love shouldn’t leave a woman poorer, lonelier, and accused.\u201d<\/p>\n

No one spoke.<\/p>\n

Then Adam finally said, \u201cDad didn’t have to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I answered softly. \u201cHe wanted to.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Madison.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn’t know because you never asked. You accused me instead.\u201d<\/p>\n

She started crying.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

I folded Walter’s letter carefully.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe you’re sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked hopeful.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut forgiveness doesn’t mean everything goes back to the way it was.\u201d<\/p>\n

A week later, I received the reimbursement.<\/p>\n

I kept enough to recover what caregiving had cost me and donated part of it to the hospice unit that had cared for Walter.<\/p>\n

That evening, Madison sent me a message.<\/p>\n

I saw the dates. I saw what you paid. I’m sorry. I punished you because I missed my mother and didn’t know where to put the hurt.<\/em><\/p>\n

I stared at the message for a long time.<\/p>\n

Then I replied:<\/p>\n

Your father loved you. That was never the question. The question was whether you could respect the person who loved him when you weren’t there.<\/em><\/p>\n
