The fire department had nominated him for a special award recognizing his actions during the rescue.<\/p>\n

The nomination had been approved.<\/p>\n

He was going to receive the department’s Medal of Valor.<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

All those balloons I’d carried to the station suddenly seemed almost funny.<\/p>\n

I’d gone there expecting to embarrass him with a birthday celebration.<\/p>\n

Instead, I had learned that my husband had risked himself to help a child and was being recognized for his courage.<\/p>\n
