\u201cI’m Chase. I live over at Cedar Creek Trailer Park with my mom. I’m trying to make some money before school starts. I was wondering if you needed somebody to mow.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTwenty-five dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ll give you fifty.\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyebrows rose.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou’re serious?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you do a good job.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n

He started the mower and worked for nearly an hour without stopping.<\/p>\n

No phone.<\/p>\n

No headphones.<\/p>\n

No complaining.<\/p>\n

When he finished, the lawn looked completely different.<\/p>\n

I handed him fifty dollars.<\/p>\n

He counted it once.<\/p>\n

He was climbing into a brand-new black SUV.<\/p>\n

Something slid onto the floor.<\/p>\n

A framed photograph.<\/p>\n

The glass was cracked.<\/p>\n

But the picture was clear.<\/p>\n

An older man stood beside a little boy holding a bicycle.<\/p>\n
